Solidarity in the Occupied Territories

Palestinians and Israeli activists come together in weekly peaceful protest in the West Bank

In the Palestinian village of Bil’in the construction by the Israeli army of the fence/wall through the West Bank has disastrous consequences. It will cut the villagers off from two thirds of their land, the main source of their livelihood.

For the past year the villagers have been holding peaceful demonstrations each week to protest against the fence/wall. They have been joined by Israeli and international activists. The weekly Palestinian-Israeli demonstrations and other activities in Bil’in have come to symbolize non-violent protest and solidarity between the two communities.

The Israeli army has responded with unwarranted force. Soldiers fire tear gas, stun grenades and rubber-coated metal bullets, and often beat and arrest demonstrators. Israeli peace activists are increasingly being prevented from reaching the village. The Israeli army has been imposing curfews, declaring the place a “closed military area” and turning back Israeli peace activists on the roads leading to the village. As a result fewer outsiders are present to witness the human rights abuses which the villagers suffer daily.

With the olive harvest underway, Israeli peace activists have joined the Palestinian villagers in Bil’in to pick olives in the fields which are being cut off from the village by the fence/wall. The route of the fence has been designed to appropriate large areas of Palestinian land and expand Israeli settlements, built in the Occupied Territories in violation of international law.

Although the Israeli authorities claim that the fence/wall is being built to “separate” Israel from the West Bank, more than 80 per cent of it is being erected on Palestinian land inside the occupied West Bank.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has called on Israel to cease constructing the fence/wall in the West Bank and dismantle the sections already built there. Israel continues to disregard the ICJ’s recommendation.

JDL Member Imprisoned in Bomb Plot Killed
JDL Activist Imprisoned for Role in Plot to Bomb California Mosque Killed in Arizona Prison
By ALEX VEIGA
The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - A Jewish Defense League activist imprisoned for his role in a plot to bomb a California mosque and the office of a Lebanese-American congressman was killed at a federal prison in Phoenix, an FBI spokesman said Saturday.
Earl Krugel, 62, was killed in an assault Friday evening at the Federal Correctional Institution, said FBI agent Richard Murray.
Murray wouldn't release further details but said federal authorities had opened a homicide investigation.
Krugel's wife, Lola, of Los Angeles said FBI investigators told her an inmate had struck her husband on the head from behind with a cement block.
"Earl never saw it happening," she said. "He was exercising."
He had been at the medium-security prison for three days, according to his sister Linda Krugel of Los Angeles.
Krugel, a former dental assistant from Reseda, and late JDL leader Irv Rubin were arrested in 2001 and charged with conspiring to bomb the King Fahd Mosque in Culver City and a field office of Republican Rep. Darrell E. Issa, who is Lebanese-American.
Krugel pleaded guilty in 2003 to one count of conspiracy to violate the civil rights of worshippers at the mosque and one count of carrying an explosive device in connection with a conspiracy to impede or injure an office of the United States.
He was sentenced in September to 20 years in prison.
The Jewish Defense League was founded in 1968 by Rabbi Meir Kahane. Kahane advocated the forcible removal of Arabs from Israel. He was assassinated in 1990 in New York.

Cameraman freed by Israeli police

The al-Jazeera Arabic news network says one of its cameramen has been beaten and briefly arrested by Israeli police.

Nabil Mazzawi was arrested by Israeli police during a protest against the barrier Israel is building in the West Bank and later freed.

Israeli police confirmed that he had been arrested, but said that he had assaulted a border policeman.

The Israeli Foreign Press Association has issued a strong protest over the Mr Mazzawi's treatment.

It has called for an investigation into what it said was his unwarranted detention.

He was later released without charge, Mr Mazzawi said, after showing police the footage he had taken of the protest.

Mr Mazzawi is an Arab citizen of Israel.

Protests against the building of the barrier are a weekly event in the West Bank village of Bilin.

Israel says its 600km (370 mile) barrier is needed to stop suicide attacks, but Palestinians see it as a land grab.

Palestinian Boy Dies After Israeli Gunshot

Sat Nov 5,11:04 PM ET

A 12-year-old Palestinian boy who was shot by Israeli troops while holding a toy gun last week died of his wounds Saturday, relatives and medical officials said.

Israeli forces mistook the boy for an armed militant during an exchange of gunfire Thursday in the West Bank town of Jenin and later discovered he was carrying a toy M-16 rifle, military officials said. The boy, Ahmed Ismail Khatib, was taken to an Israeli hospital with wounds to his head and stomach.

Dr. Tzvi Ben-Yishai, a spokesman for Rambam Hospital in the Israeli city of Haifa, said the boy died Saturday and his parents decided to donate his organs "to bring hearts closer and bring peace closer." The boy's uncle, Jamal Khatib, confirmed that the family had donated the boy's organs.

The boy's relatives said they realized the organs probably would save Jewish lives, and they hoped their decision would advance the cause of peace.

"This is part of our culture. As Muslims, we can tell the world that we're not terrorists," Khatib said. "If it goes to Jews or Arabs, it doesn't matter to us."

The shooting occurred on the first day of Eid el-Fitr, a major Muslim holiday marking the end of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, and Palestinian children frequently buy toy guns and receive gifts to celebrate.

At the time, the soldiers were pursuing an Islamic Jihad fugitive, who escaped, Palestinian witnesses said. The army has expressed regret over the shooting.

The Israel Defense Forces has been using phosphorus shells in training exercises, a practice forbidden in inhabited areas under international law.

Several weeks ago, four Bedouin goatherders were badly hurt by the detonation of an unexploded phosphorus shell they found near their home in the South Hebron Hills. Fadal Abu Aram, 17, died of his injuries several weeks later; Hani, 12, is still in serious condition at his family's shack in the village of Carmel; Mahmoud, 14, and Yusef, 24, were also injured by the explosion.

The blast occurred on August 17 in an area where Bedouin families have been living in caves, in an IDF fire zone. Civilians who had been evicted from the area were permitted to return following an interim order from the High Court of Justice, but the IDF never cleared the unexploded ordinance.

IDF choppers in service of drug cartel

American officials demand Israel provide explanations for how U.S.-made choppers sold to Israel ended up in service of Columbian drug cartel. Incident may cloud relations between countries

Itamar Eichner

Another diplomatic incident threatens to taint U.S.-Israeli relations: The American government has recently demanded Israel clarify how five U.S.-made helicopters sold to Israel in the mid-70s found their way into the hands of a Columbian drug cartel.
An U.S. embassy official met with an Israeli foreign ministry official in Jerusalem several days ago, where he informed him that the American Foreign Ministry has requested the embassy to launch an investigation into the matter.
According to American sources, the military copters currently serve the drug mafia in the South American country.
Top diplomatic sources fear that this incident will once again heat-up tensions between Israel and the U.S. and cloud the strategic dialogue between the two countries, which is scheduled to renew in November, after talks were suspended for more than a year-and-a-half.

Kosher deal went sour
The dubious affair, which was already investigated by the Israeli Defense Ministry, and later turned over to the hands of the police, was uncovered about two years ago.
Investigators revealed that the Defense Ministry signed a deal with an Israeli company three years ago, contracting it to negotiate the sale of five IAF helicopters for a sum of USD 100,000 per aircraft.
The ministry permitted the choppers, of a MD 500 Defender model, be sold either to the Mexican federal police, or to the Spain firefighters department. However, contrary to the terms of the license, the copters ended up in Columbia, by way of Canadian mediators.
A Defense Ministry spokeswoman said in response that "after suspicions were raised that an illicit exchange took place, the ministry launched an initial investigation into the matter last year."
"According to instructions of the chief prosecutor, the case was handed over to the police in 2004," she added.
Sources at the Defense Ministry refused to comment on the matter.

I'll be reporting for duty in the holy land in just another few months. Considering i'm in a very high level combat unit, i'm usualy deployed right where all the action is.

I'll be sure do something that will catch the attention of the ever so willing, anti-israel news agencies to report on, just so i can see one of you post it here. It would be an honour! *excited*

Any suggestions?

perhaps try and set up friendly talks between the two peoples... no no, that wouldn't work... i'd probably get shot at and would have to chase the coward into a crownded building where the rest of his family will jump in front of his sorry ass.... then i'd have to knock the butt of my weapon in his mothers face for getting in my way and watch it gush blood for the french news agencies to capture and report on (and you could rest assured they will forget to mention the biaaaatchs kid just tried to kill me and she tried to stop me from arresting him). i'd finally find the ******.... drag him out by his nostrals (after of course giving him a nice off camara beating)... attach him to my buddies tank.... and drive off with him dragging behind while i piss off the tank on him. I'd probably let him keep his Hamas headband on - just gives me something to aim my piss on.

“The United Nations has demonstrated equal concern for the lives of Israelis and Palestinians.”

FACT

While the UN routinely adopts resolutions critical of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, it has never adopted a single resolution unequivocally condemning violence against Israeli citizens. One of the most dramatic examples of the institution’s double-standard came in 2003 when Israel offered a draft resolution in the General Assembly for the first time in 27 years.

The resolution called for the protection of Israeli children from terrorism, but it did not receive enough support from the members of the General Assembly to even come to a vote. Israel had introduced the resolution in response to the murder of dozens of Israeli children in terrorist attacks, and after a similar resolution had been adopted by a UN committee (later adopted by the full Assembly) calling for the protection of Palestinian children from “Israeli aggression.” Israel's ambassador withdrew the proposed draft after it became clear that members of the nonaligned movement were determined to revise it in such a way that it would have ultimately been critical of Israel.
