what did you think about the final ep anyway? seemed pretty stupid.. steal douglas adams idea (though it was a joke of course in one of the hitchhikers guide books) about how humans evolved, then solve problems the plot has with religion... zzzz |
It was pretty weak. The biggest problem, to me, is that the clear implication of the last episode is the planet they wind up on is our Earth. Yet, they identified the earlier, nuked "Earth" as "Earth" by the star patterns they discovered in the Tomb of Athena--patterns which are, of course, taken from the perspective of our Earth.
In order to reconcile this discrepancy, you'd have to accept that there were two nearly identical, habitable planets in completely different places in the galaxy that somehow had precisely the same pattern of stars visible from its surface. That just seems completely implausible, and because no effort was made to explain how it could be, I can only assume it was an oversight; a pretty egregious one at that. As a whole, the last batch of ten episodes felt rushed and poorly thought out. I'd have rather they took their time and wrote something really interesting, or at least consistent. Oh well, at least it didn't end on a cliffhanger or some such because of budget issues. |

Yeah this was the only good thing about it really... It was so horribly gay with everyone living happily ever after, (including heart-felt adama arm-in arm stroles, and everybody crying) and all the mysteries being solved by religion, or not being solved (Cara), but at least it didn't end in a cliff-hanger :) |

to be fair, it would be impossible to adequately wrap up 4 seasons worth of mystery in an hour and a half though i spose |
i dont understand all the hate for the final episode. it was always gonna be 'god did it' which i thought was lazy writing, i felt ripped off about starbuck's role (i really wanted her to be the "end" of mankind) but the action was great and i liked that we are the product of humans and cylons, and the process of building robots and destroying ourselves is well underway. i thought adama's scene with roslyn to be really lovely too. |

eh? was there any implication that the star patterns in the athena tomb referred to our star patterns? or did we merely name our star patterns after the various planets/systems of the 12 colonies? its been a while since i saw that episode, were the constellations obviously our own?
i watched most of the series stoned off my so i could be missing things...

no doubt about that, i think its a real shame when you look back at how many random episodes they had in later season 2 and much of season 3, that could've been used to advance the plot at a more realistic pace. thanks very much executives!! that's tv though- babylon 5's entire final season was a bit of a letdown because JMS thought he'd only have 4 seasons. |

My recollection is that it was visibly our own stars, not just the names copied with different patterns. It's been a while since I've seen that episode, though. |
