Lots and lots of spelling tests. |
Oh. I mean, Portuguese has its inconsistencies as well (the alphabet has 5 vowel sounds, the language has 7), but since the number of possibilities is limited, we learn in school "what goes with what", so you're never with more than 2 or 3 possibilities in mind whenever you need to write a new word.

Yep; English is a terribly illogical language most of the time- Its all just drilling! |
Want to hear the worst of all? It actually makes a lot of sense for me... although there are words that idiotically retain the spelling from one region and the pronunciation from another region of England (such as "bury"). These are the obvious exceptions. |

| It makes sense to me, but that is after decades of experience. I always thought that non-native speakers would be horribly frustrated by it. |

I believe most of us are, specially because it's quite difficult to find a teacher that cares about pronunciation... and English has way more vowels than your average language (same as Portuguese, but there's little overlapping).
The really weird thing I noticed recently is how many Brazilians seem unable to see the difference between "cow" and "call" just because of the spelling (and our tendency to turn a final "l" into a "w", so pervasive that even in my own head I say "finaw"). It had never occurred to me that these words could even sound alike...
As a linguist, I don't think my opinion counts :p |

Hard to break some habits; I've heard that after a certain amount of time you actually become unable to HEAR certain pronounciations-- I read that Japanese can't actually hear the difference between L & R for example... This might be total bull, and I don't have a source, so CORRECTIFWRONG!
English is just a crazy language; its a mongrel, slapped together randomly from too many different and conflicting languages-- I'm so glad I don't have to study it; I think it would be realllllyy hard since the rules are so complicated... Japanese is so great- Grammar is simple, and you SAY the grammar, so there's no :wtf: moments (less at least)! :D |

That's a half-truth. Here, try it yourself: See if you can notice the difference between the following consonants...

I had written a giant post explaining why it was difficult to tell these sounds apart, but my computer froze and I'm a bit busy. Still, you should be able to have fun trying to hear the difference between these sounds in the beginning - after a while, you'll get it (if Eskimos and Mongolians can do it, so can you... in theory :p). |

Goddamnit Lilith, recognise my hilarious cat-vid post! :whip: |
Here is what your cat-vid post looks like from this side of the screen-

Unless it says somewhere "FUNNY CAT VIDS!" then its just blank and will stay blank as far as I'm concerned.
Blame PDD and other sub-forums where the resident window lickers would post auto-play vids. Either to ninja you with whatever rubbish douche-step music you damn kids listen to now, or some tinfoil wearing spastic trying to prove his New World Order theory to anyone opening the thread (usually to belittle them), with 3hrs of low-rez student or Mike Moore documentary.

| I haven't seen an autoplay video here in a year or more. I would know, I think I posted the last few (to be annoying... :p) |
