I came across a guy while I was walking my dog today that had quite an odd speech impediment. He didn't stutter, but it was as if random words/syllables were missing from his sentences.
He said "What...pretty, dog"
"Look at its blue" (eyes I'm guessing)
"Is it full" (grown?)
It didn't even sound like he was trying to finish the words or sentences. His intonation didn't lower at the end of his sentences, so it was as if he thought he was finishing them in his head, but nothing was coming out of his mouth. Very weird. He sounded like a record that was skipping. I felt bad because some of his sentences (I can't remember them now) were missing subjects, so I didn't know what he was trying to say. I asked him to repeat himself, but he said the same thing with the same words missing. I got uncomfortable and eventually just walked away lol. |

You probably met an aphasic. It's a really cruel pathology (and can be way worse). |

I felt really bad. I thought just walking away at a convenient break in the "conversation" would be better than asking him to repeat every question he asked me because I couldn't understand what he was saying half the time.
Now that I think about it, I remember learning about Broca's and Wernicke's Aphasia in a BCS class my sophomore year. Language & Psycholinguistics I believe. I don't remember what either of them affected though.
Edit: Looks like it's still being offered. Good ol' BCS 152.

| Sounds like he had Broca's then. A few times I was able to tell what he meant, he just wasn't presenting his thoughts clearly. That's pretty interesting. How rare is that? |

Not sure. As far as I know, you need to bang your head really hard to damage Broca's area... so the amount of people with Broca's aphasia in a given population is proportional to the number of serious head-bangers in that group :D
Oh, and about a third of stroke patients have some form of aphasia according to these guys. This is the most likely cause. |

| I thought both of them were affected by lesions on that particular area, so disease could cause it as well. Not really sure what kinds of diseases though. It didn't look like he had a stroke. His speech was otherwise fairly articulate, and he didn't have any telltale drooping of either side of his face. |

I would like to buy a good camera. Someone suggested the Canon Rebel T3 or the Olympus E-3. But I'm not sure..
Suggestions? :)
Budget is $500 (subject to change). |
