Another entry in the "All conspiracy theories are bat insane" category. This one is new one, just stumbled across it today.
quote:
Redemption movement
The redemption theory is an American conspiracy theory created by Roger Elvick and marketed as a tax evasion and fraud scheme. The theory claims that when the United States government abandoned the gold standard in 1933, it pledged its citizens as collateral so it could borrow money. According to Elvick, the government creates a fictitious person (straw man) corresponding to each newborn citizen with bank accounts initially holding $630,000. The theory further holds that through obscure procedures under the Uniform Commercial Code, a citizen can "reclaim" the straw man and write checks against its accounts.[1] Its adherents sometimes call themselves "Sovereign Citizens".
One element of the myth states that Americans are U.S. nationals, not U.S. citizens, and can therefore avoid taxes by changing their filing status from "U.S. citizen" to "non-resident alien."
Seriously, the lenghts americans will go to avoid paying taxes...
The reason why I'm not so tolerant regarding Conspiracy Theories is because they've cause a lot of blood to be shed here in Brazil.
Soon after the end of WWII, a rumour spread amongst the Japanese that Japan had won the war and that all information that said otherwise was just propaganda - and everyone with Japanese ancestry that accepted defeat should be executed. Opportunists forged loads of "evidence" that Japan won the war, and one of the saddest episodes of this history happened when conspiracy theorists predicted a ship from the Japanese Navy would take all migrants (who fled Japan due to the harsh economic conditions) back to their now prosperous homeland. Scores of families sold everything they had so they could make it to the ship... and, of course, it never came to their rescue.
Picture of the individuals that started it:
Fanaticism makes even the meek dangerous, heh :p

Actually, there are conspiracy theorists that say the Nazis made some genetic experimentations in Southern Brazil (where the "Aryan" race is well widespread), but they've all been proven wrong.

Wtf is wrong with the writers for House.
The idea that West African slaves being transported across the Atlantic in the 18th century would speak Swahili is totally implausible. Give me a ing break.

A TV show got a linguistic fact wrong?! I can't believe it! :p
I seldom understand the "Portuguese" they speak on American television (I don't think they assume we speak Spanish that often), and that's always amused me as a native speaker.
Edit: Out of curiosity, does House speak Swahili too? This is my favourite joke ever from the show...
It's funnier if you speak some Mandarin, I guess...
