I enjoy reading some Star Wars novels for fun light reading occasionally, but I love the deeper cuts of the genre :) Huge fan of dystopian stuff.
Have read Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, enjoyed them both a lot. Want to read the sequels, I've heard they get a lot more philosophical which would be interesting to read.
I love The Martian Chronicles and I've been meaning to check out 451 one of these days. I think my girlfriend actually has a signed copy of the book somewhere.
Yeah fair enough, for some reason i find it hard comparing sci-fi and dystopian stuff... sci-fi is like fantasy, dystopian is like literature... Literature can obviously have a genre, but i think it's just more message-focused, while sci-fi etc is usually more character/plot driven... might just be making up pointless differences, who knows, but i consider star wars and 1984 completely different, not that either is better or worse or anything :p
1984 uses another time to comment on today, star wars is just sci-fi... similar to stuff like gulliver's travels (ing awesome book, misinterpreted as a kids book by the old cartoons etc) in the fantasy genre... it's 'fantastic' elements exist only to comment on contemporary issues, not for any kind of 'fun' or enjoyable reason, or to explore the characters like real fantasy does
My brother was into star wars novels in a big way, i was a lot more into fantasy when i was a nipper, people like george r.r martin, david eddings, raymond e feist etc, before getting into more serious stuff, like all the classics :)

See, I consider Sci-Fi very different from fantasy. Sci-Fi is more about the present, the future of the real world, and the consequences of actions we take today and could take in the future. I'd consider Star Wars more like Fantasy because it's more about the plot and characters than things like the themes in BNW or 1984. I could write about the definition of Sci-Fi and the differences between it and Fantasy all day :p [Though obviously it's all personal opinion as there is no set definition :)]
I was a big fan of the song of Ice and Fire series. I really hope he actually finishes the series and doesn't keep it going on forever and then dying on us. I read a few of the Robert Jordan books (own the first 9), but halfway through the ninth my bookmark fell out and I just put down the book and haven't read anymore. Huge, huge, huge fan of Terry Pratchett as well.
Going to read 1984 next, after I finish this Zahn novel. Then might look into Ubik, by Dick, re-read what's been published so far of Ice & Fire, or ask for suggestions from the COR :p

scifi purists will tell you that science fiction is about science, hence the distinction between hard and soft scifi. I happen to think that is bollocks, because some of the stuff in hard scifi is just as far fetched as what you’d get in fantasy. I prefer to call it all speculative fiction, but that’s just me.

I overheard a girl at the video store ask an employee if they had Blair Witch Project on Blu-Ray. I was unsuccessful at containing my laughter.

this is a way better definition than mine, good point about star wars type sci fi being able to fit in with fantasy, makes a lot more sense than me just saying they're the same with different names, since they're pretty much exactly the same and can have the same name, you're right.. :p
PKC- those purists, nothing scientific in there :p
yeah song of ice and fire, i think i read the first 3, then he took like 5 years to bring out the next one and i got over it, and cbf reading all of them again just to get upto date (even though they're awesome!)... haha i think i made it to number 7 in wheel of time, again my brother was nuts on it, but i only really enjoyed the first book... everything after that was a bit of a chore, or a personal challenge... (i managed to finish Ulysses by joyce, so can get over never finishing robert jordan's diarhetic writing style :p )
also a HUGE fan of pratchett!! How ing sad was it that he got diagnosed with Alzheimers last year :( brilliant man, really tragic :(
I don't do much reading for the last few years, other stuff to keep me occupied, managed to slam a few in the end of last year holidays though, back catalogue of hunter s. thompson, fahrenheit 451, and brave new world again, cormac mccarthy's the road and a few other short classics i think... old man and the sea was one... :)
edit: ever read any douglass adams? guy who wrote hitchhikers guide to the galaxy... if you like terry pratchett he'll blow your mind, dude was a genius :D
