As I mentioned that doesn't actually matter, its the fact that you're educated and open minded that is the actual disparity between intelligentsia and bogan.
So does Brazil have any weird cultural and essentially inoffensive social stereotypes? I've not been to south america so all anybody hears about the place is typically the bad things, like forests full of things that will kill you and slums full of AK47 wielding coke heads... oh and a particular act of genital hair removal :p
The funny thing about "The Brazilian" is that it's originally from NYC (though the idea came from Brazilian emigrants).
As for our bogans/chavs/neds... we have malas:
They're usually harmless but they try too hard to look like criminals, so it's actually a bit confusing when you try to find out who's actually a criminal and who isn't. The stereotypical mala listens to Rio Funk/Hip Hop/Axé Music (pronounced "Ar-SHAIR MEW-zee-kee") and is attracted to Funk stars like this one:
And that's a bit of Brazilian culture for you :D

Heh. How do you become famous in Australia then? In the media and in the academia, how did John Safran and Peter Singer become well known if outliers are always pulled down?
Lilith summed it up, extremely well in fact! I would say the 'bogans' are a larger population, but the intelligentsia are often more active, or more supportive of what they like, since they feel like the bogans are always out to shut down their 'artistic' --
shows like john safran and the chasers war on everything have really huge followings which for the most part counter the extreme opposition which often comes from the more conservative bogans
its kind of funny because the tall poppy/underdog works in both bogan and 'progressive' branches-- the progressives try and pull down the big bogans while rooting for the underdog progressives (john safran for example), while the bogans do the same, heavily supporting the super conservatives who get ripped on by the intelligentsia, while trying to tear down the intelligentsia's tall poppys (again, john safran quite often gets criticised)
the bogans are a bigger population so you hear more from them, and the intelligentsia are victims of tall poppy more often because of that
lilith made a brilliant point that in aus its not so much of a money, or even cultural or geographical divide but is more about identity groups-- you get the 'progressives' coming from all over the place, often kids of bogans try to 'better' their 'backward' parents etc, even if they come from super-bogan areas for example

Gonna be a long night at work. :/

Pretty well described.
Kinda funny that this is being discussed from me misreading Lira's post last night :p (stupid beer)

Here we have something similar which is sort of a younger bogan divergence called a "Lad", but you could probably fairly call them a wigger because they're almost always white, young and male.
Borrow some of the dress and behaviour from american blacks with a bit of a chav local twist to being brand snobs for certain types, they tend to listen to a lot of electro, R&B and hard dance more so than hip hop and rap.
Likewise, they'd be mistaken for criminals but they're really just posers and a nuisance.
Thanks everyone for your invaluable insights about Australian society! Not only do we now know more about bogans, we even know there's a whole bogan taxonomy that even includes lads! :D

Hardcore music event!
-no hardcore people
-no hardcore drug use
-or people that might look like they're actually hardcore
-please don't stab/drug us, that's just too hardcore and the insurance won't cover us for that kind of hardcore activity in a hardcore music event.
Ok, so we're only 60% hardcore... which is kind of hardcore
