It's just because I've never heard that here. Actually, I didn't have eat breakfast (apart from the occasional glass of milk) until my dietician told me I was probably being too Brazilian regarding my eating habits. But first, let's talk about yours...
I'm just guessing here, but I reckon this may be related to the industrial revolution in England where you needed to eat as much as you could before you went to work. It's always a bit of a cultural shock for us here in South America (or in Brazil, at least) when we hear in American sitcoms people saying that "the breakfast is the most important meal of the day" or something of that sort.
Here we think that lunch is the most important meal of the day and it's the meal that gets the most attention. After all, that's when we indulge our gluttony. I go back to my parents' house every Sunday so I can have lunch with them - and if I fail to show up, drama ensues. Though I hate this sort of parallel, there's a reason why breakfast here is just called "Morning Coffee" - you drink some coffee and away you go, you're well rested anyway. And there's this odd belief that if you eat at night, you get fat :p
(By the way, in case you're wondering, I'm a dinner person... oh, Lira, ever the nonconformist :D) |
I'm not so sure I'd attribute it to the industrial revolution, but, yes, you've got the general idea.
Breakfast has always been the biggest meal of the day for me. If I miss lunch it's not the end of the world, but if I don't have time for a pretty big breakfast, I'm pretty much useless by about 10 AM. When I was playing sports full-time I'd eat about 2-3,000 calories worth of food for breakfast everyday (intentionally). |

Hahah, when I said best meal I meant that it's the tastiest/has the most delicious options. And since it's the first meal of the day, it makes it all that much more enjoyable to prepare something awesome. I don't always eat RIGHT away, but ceetainly always within a couple hours of being awake. Can't function properly without something in me.

I can assure you, that's more belief than practice. The reality is that most North Americans, myself included, aren't going to drag themselves out of bed earlier just to create time to eat breakfast. |
Reason why I just drink a glass of milk and have a fruit when I wake up :p

Whoa, if I have this much food before noon, I don't think I can't survive until 1 PM without a nap :p

Oh, misunderstood you, sorry about that :p
Still, this is culturally exotic to me in a way. What do you usually have for breakfast? When you say it has the "most delicious options" I can only think of what people here eat when they DO have breakfast (bread and butter) and North American stereotypes (eggs and bacon). |

| I usually have yogurt & some sort of eggs (scrambled w/ ham & cheese if I make it, some sort of omelet if I go out). People usually have pastries, fresh fruit, & cereal, too. |

Oh different stuff all the time. Eggs many ways - scrambled, omelets, hard boiled, poached, fried; fruit, cottage cheese, toast with peanut butter and/or jam, pancakes, crepes, English muffins, cereal, yogurt, bacon, potatoes (home fried), protein shakes, and smoothies.
I could go on and on about all the yummy stuff you can put in omelets and crepes. And pancakes. OM NOM NOM. |
