Well, I'm starting to get it shape for a kayaking trek that has been a dream of mine since I started the sport.
Since school started, I haven't been eating, or working out much at all, and I lost 13 pounds, making me about 135. Pretty bad. I was thinking that this weight loss might be for the best, and I should consider trying this out.
Kayaking, from Keansburg, all the way to battery park in Manhattan.

Now, this may not seem like much of a task, but there are a lot of things to worry about.
1. Stamina
2. Currents (Most of which I am familiar with)
3. Channels (I have a fear of large ships, which has really ruined my kayaking season this summer. The channels in the raritan bay are very busy, and if I come close to a large tanker, I know for a fact that I am going to turn right around because.)
4. Tide (I can't do much about this, because it's going to be such a long trip, I'll catch both tides, comming in AND out. But, I also have a fear of sandbars, I can usually see them [waves crashing in the middle of open water is usually a sign], but if I touch a sand bar, I am going to panic and probably turn around. Obviously, there are more sandbars during low tide, which is why i am concerned.)
I am shooting for around spring time, possibly during spring break, or after school is over.
I'm thinking about creating a workout plan that will greatly increase the stamina in my wrists, arms, elbow and shoulders. I now have access to a rowing machine, which I will use to my advantage. I am going to attempt to go kayaking when it's unseasonably warm (I have a drysuit, it's not a problem). Push ups are always great! I am also thinking about taking boxing lessons as well.
And the best thing about this, is that I will video tape myself during the trip. Marc Summers' Kayak trip! |

I think that's pretty stupid if you are ganna try kayaking all the way to Manhattan. There is so much risk involved.

I would say whole body exercises would do you good. Plyometrics too. Chin ups, push up, deadlifts and clean & presses. High reps, low weight. That should help you get some stamina.

I just thought I'd post in here, because I've been doing the exercise routine my sister designed for me for a week now...and it's fun! I can already feel myself tightening up, and soon I will have an ass like a horse, lol.

all i can say is be careful with your back; overall i prefer deadlifts for my hamstrings than other exercises...not for my back though
