efficacy not efficiency.

efficacy is effectiveness. Bench press is pretty basic but it produces results. Doing a triple backflip swan dive with a roman candle in your butt is difficult but doesnt necessarily do anything for you.

squats also produce results. the best excercise for your butt. Also it developes your quads hamstrings.

Effectiveness to the respect of isolation (bench press would be better)
effectiveness to the respect of functionality (squats would produce better results)


to an athlete a squat is a more of an important and effective excercise due to the fact that it is functional and is most likely reproduced in movement in the sport.

You can see that im arguing that specifics are required to judge "efficacy"

my first comment was saying that results and goals are what you should use to choose an exercise; not how technically difficult it is.

I die from absolute boredom when doing little exercised like crunches and squats.

Best workouts usually come from some sort of sport, ie boxing, martial arts, riding.

With isolated workouts (weights, cardio, resistance) they'll do too much of one, or just cardio/weights/resistance. Good workout = all 3. They build up the muscle but have no endurance, or whatever.
good workout = smart workout (know wtf you're doing, don't just jump on a machine and put it to the heaviest weight setting)

Well, that'd be all well and good if everybody in the world wanted well rounded results. Fact of the matter is, most people could give a about their conditioning, while the majority (men) want to bulk up. So, for them, working out is far more efficient, as you are able to target muscle groups and really challenge them, allowing you to build more muscle quicker.
