| okay a lot of you are recommending a lot more smaller balanced meals throughout the day for the best results, but what do you recommend to someone who just doesn't have time for that many? |

So, just got back from my first gym session. My bodyfat is an astonishing 7% :) It is way too low, as I'm trying to gain weight. My goal is to gain a lot of bodymass, then cut the fat back later when I gained.
The instructor told me I should eat lots and lots of both protein, carbs AND fat.. I guess he's right.. actually he told me I should stuff myself with junk food and do my training. So I just ate a whole litre of icecream .. *burp* .. Is this wrong should I eat something else.. of course I'll eat tuna, oat meal and milk the rest of the day.. but he actually adviced me to take the "icecream diet" .. I don't know about it.. is this wrong? I guess the 900 calories from it is great as I'm trying to gain weight.. |

well if you don't have time to make food you could always try making protein shakes or meal replacements or something like that. that's how i get through the school/work day.
i think really the only reason people say space stuff out rather than eating fewer larger meals is...
1. digestion is easier when you eat small meals and you don't have your body competing with digestion of food and can then focus on muscle (same reason you should wait after a meal before you work out)
2. if you eat a bunch of food in one sitting you just don't absorb the nutirients as efficiently as you would if you space it out through out the day...
or atleast something like that... |

protein shakes are the best for replacing a meal! Even protein bars. |

its hard to replace the value that small meals give you.
Mainly, you cant. Just do your normal meals, but inbetween snack on protein bars. Maybe drink a slimfast shake here and there. They have awesome protein in them and are just solid balanced meals. |

Thats a terrible Idea. milk isnt that good for you and creamed sugar isnt great either.
If you want to gain weight right eat 50/50 splits of pasta with meatsauce. REALLY meaty sauce. I used to put about 6 hamburgers worth of meat in my sauce and it would last me 2 meals. Eat till you pop.
I went from a lean 160

to a fatty 180

just by EATING MORE. its not more fat...and protein...and carbs. Thats pretty much your entire food pyramid. eat MORE
my diet was

daily. Keep it healthy, clean, and dont yourself up with massive ODs on dairy. |

hmmm...well he's basically thinking that your body is going to use all the calories from the icecream to burn off as energy since you have a high metabolism. basically you should just increase calorical intake in general. because you do have a high metabolism, the reason you can't gain weight is because your body burns the calories you eat faster than other people or older people, your metabolism will slow down with age, but i personally would rather eat quality calories over just junk food because there is no nutritional value to it. you could go and eat 3 big mac's a meal and yeah you're going to gain weight, but it won't be the type of weight you're looking for necessarily...it's gonna be a lot of fat. it'd be better to keep your ratios balanced and just increase the total amount of food you're eating then to just binge and pig out because then you'll get all the nutrients you're body will need and put on lean body mass instead of just excess body fat.
think of diet as science because that's what it is. your body needs certain things in certain amounts to make muscle. just give it what it needs in balanced ratios and if you're not gaining weight, well increase the total amount of food that you're eating, but keep your ratios balanced...
ps. don't over do it on the tuna. i love tuna and it's a great source of protein, but it has a lot of mercury in it, which if you eat too much of can be bad for your organs long term. i'm sure you're fine, but just a heads up... |
