i'm sure this has been brought up somewhere in the 3 workout threads, but is it recommended one consumes such products as protein shakes to help gain mass. I certainly believe protein shakes work and accelerate your mass growth, but then again -- anything that accelerates a bodily process beyond its natural speed is NOT natural. So what are the downsides of consuming shakes? Once you stop working out, that mass turns to flab?

Protein makes you a brick and fart a lot. I think that for the most part you can make very impressive gains without it. However, to eat tuna, and steak, and salmon, eggs, and hamburgers all day is expensive. So I would say balance it it out. Give yourself protein at key points, 30 min after a workout and 3 hours before bed to have it in your system for repair periods.

Ive never really taken it. I did for a bit and it added weight, but I didnt find it necessary for growth.

As for fat...working out lowers your body fat percent to an athletic level of 10% about (after a while) if you get to be 200 lbs of pure muscle and then stop working out, it is more that your body returns to a normal 15 percent. 15 percent of 200 is 30. So youll jump up to 230 lbs and that all will be fat.

Yes after a while muscle atrophies and fat % increases, but i wouldnt say you turn into a fat monster.

what kind of supplement are we talking about?

if we're talking about Mass building products like Gainer2500 or something like that...then the downside is they are full of a lot of sugars...these products have lots of carbohydrates for energy...but a good deal of it does turn to fat from my experience, but it does help you get the added meal size for bulking periods...i've had a lot of success with these products early on in my training because i was pretty skinny and i drank this stuff all day...a good deal was fat, but i definitely made muscle gain using it...

if we're talking about protein supplements like your whey protein or something like that...then the product really is just designed to be a source of protein. it's supposed to be used to help people get that added protein in their diet that they would have a hard time getting from the preperation of normal foods. also it's a quick fix...the reason people like to use it after a workout and such...is because it enters the bloodstream faster since your body doesn't have to digust it to get the nutrients...so some people think that is beneficial to their training...definitely geared more towards people that are watching their intakes and have a balanced diet going on.

If I need to get super-pumped I usually just eat a frisbee.

My main point was that you cant eat eggs all day cuz that sucks, and you usually have to spice it up with more expensive versions of protein.

I get my tuna for 45 cents a can at a bargain place and my eggs from costco. The nice fish and steak are expensive. Then again, realize im poor and 12 bucks for a steak is a ball buster hehe.

Ive been trying to push working out as something even the wretchedly poor such as myself can do and still see results.
