It's funny because I've heard so many girls say that sort of thing when starting a new exercise thing, like if someone said ok you wouldnt feel guilty about eating as much as you want.
Note: I may be wrong about you. I'm sure I'll find out either way. |

maybe u can't read or something but i said i'm 5'5 107 lbs, trying to be 120. lol
i want to get some definition, but i also want a little more mass to me...so on top of a strict protein diet, i think i'm supposed to NOT avoid calories. i'm not trying to lose weight, like most females, i'm trying to gain.
i generally eat healthy anyway besides the occasional pizza or something, but i love to cook and my meals are always perfectly balanced with a meat, potatoe or rice and a veggie... |

Heavier weights and lower reps will help you add mass Jamie, which sounds like what you are going for.
Now, just to give you some advice, it's great that you already have an idea of what you want - getting to 120. The only reason I bring this up is that for most people gaining 13 pounds of lean weight is very, very difficult. I only say this because I don't want you to get discouraged. Most bodybuilders who are looking to gain muscle will go through a bulking phase to add lots of weight (muscle and fat) and then diet back down. So they add a little bit of muscle each time they go through the cycle. It's more difficult to achieve thos same results by monitoring your diet very closely so you just gain lean weight but, it's more fun that way imo because there is no fat period that goes with it. Again, I only say this so you don't get discouraged. For you to gain 13 pounds of lean weight might take a year or longer - all depending on your workout program. |

right now i'm 5'5 and 107 lbs. i really want to be a lean 120 by the end of the year. that's my goal. i might even post before and after pics. :D

i definitely agree with more weight, less reps to gain mass. 6-8 is probably about right after a solid warmup. Do you have bad knees or anything? If not, doing hack squats, Smith machine squats and walking lunges can really help build muscle in the butt and legs.

You will need to increase your caloric intake, but with good calories obviously. Sugardevil would know a hell of a lot more about the proper diet for women than I would so I won't even go there hehe.
I see the chicks with the best bodies doing those lower body exercises.
For you to just maintain your current body weight, you need about 1900 calories / day (if you workout hard 5 times a week). I would suggest tacking on 150 calories and trying that out for a few days to see if you're gaining weight appropriately. Keep adding 150 until you're happy with your gains. Again, Sugardevil would know the proper ratio of carbs / protein / fat.
You asked if you should do lower reps and higher weight to gain definition, that will build muscle. Definition comes from reducing subcutaneous fat. Increasing mass in particular areas will prevent you from looking cracky and make you look a lot healthier. |

thanks for the advice:) i really appreciate it.
yea i get sort of discouraged, and you're right ygrene, it's hard for me to gain weight. it runs in my family (everyone is really thin and tall) and i'm just a very naturally hyper person with high metabolism. i'm definitely a snacker though. i can never sit down and eat a huge meal in one sitting. i'll just eat a little and then i'm hungier again in like 30 minutes and i'll go back and eat. my boss makes fun of me because i ALWAYS have food at my desk. that's good though, i'm pretty sure.
im just sick of being thin with no definition. i definitely have curves and the natural physique to have a killer body if i was more disciplined and on a strict diet + workout schedule, but i'm lazy, that's my problem. however, once i get back in the routine of doing weights, i'm all about it, and will go about 3-4 days a week for an hour or more.
i like having a soft, thin look, so i'm not trying to get like a six pack with rock hard thighs...that's a little too much for me.
i do have a bad lower back (bulging discs) and my knees crack all the time when i bend them a certain way...also, my hip joints are slippery. when i'm walking, if u put ur hand on my hips, u'll feel like a little "pop"...it's gross. my dad told me that i just need to strengthen my joints and that should help with those issues. |

i think you should take some advice from sugardevil when she gets into the thread. and you might have this idea that "oh well she has those rock hard abs and i don't want that", but really...if you look back at her competition photos she would be on a super restricted diet to bring that definition out...most of the time she probably looks the way you would like to. |
