One thing I'd like to have "changed", or more like see improved, is refereeing and instant replays. It would be nice to see one more referee added to the game and make him spend time in front of some monitor outside the field. Then, if some situation isn't clear and the referee can't make a clear judgement right away, he'll just ask the added referee for his opinion after he has watched the replay. That won't take much time and it'll give referees a better chance to judge the game properly. |
I honestly don't think you can have instant replay unless you have stop time....even more time would be wasted trying to get calls right and even if you add that time into extra time the game is going to get ridiculously long.
edit: I do like the idea of having an exra referee who's job would be to monitor the game from outside the field. I think the use of the instant replay and the additional referee for calling diving would be an idea. The referee should be able to make a decision within the amount of time it takes the four guys with the stretcher to get out onto the field. |

I find this hard to believe, 50% ????... eventhough the idea of changing a sport just to make it more appealing for americans is whack |
Sorry, it should have been "nearly" 50%. Projected total global sports revenues for 2012 = $141 billion, US market = $69.1 billion.
source
While I agree with you in being displeased at the idea of changing a sport just to appeal to Americans (my own beloved hockey has suffered rule changes for the same goal) we must remember that sports is a business. FIFA made revenues of $1.059 billion USD last year, mostly through television ($650 million) and marketing rights ($277 million) < source >. Presently, football ranks in as the 5th of 5 major sports in the US, meaning it gets far less of tha nearly $70 billion then the others. I fear it is inevitable that FIFA will take action to try and gain a bigger share of that market. I'm just asking what would be a reasonable way to do it. |

and when/if FIFA makes the decision to take action the first thing they will ask is what will make the casual viewer spend their money on soccer instead of the other major sports. The answer they will get will most likely be more goals and more goal scoring opportunities. |

really into the business end of things for a lot of teams now!!
ing annoying they changed the game schedule though, not really capable of staying up till 430am to try and watch 2 games at once....
the previous time slots were awesome, one at 9pm, one at 12, and one at 430... you south africa, get in a better timezone in relation to australia, kthxbye.
Netherlands are already through anyway, just needa hope no red cards or injuries or anything us up for next round!
interesting to see how aus goes as well, but cbf getting up at 430 lulz |

Posting once more before I'm out.
The added referee thing wouldn't take much, or even any more time than it currently takes to get out of unclear situations. All it would be mean is the main referee asking the added referee (via a headset they use) if the situation had a foul in it or not, if the referee thinks he didn't see it clearly and can't fully judge it from there. The added referee would then take a quick look at the replay in slow motion, like we see on television already, and that takes just a few seconds. He'll then tell the main referee exactly what happened and he'll make the decision based on that.
On some dives, for example, that doesn't really waste any additional time since it would only take the added referee a few seconds to take a look at the replay. And he doesn't make any judgements, he just tells the referee what happened in that short moment.

I think letting it grow on its own and letting the north american football make itself grow, by teams getting bigger and the overall quality of players, coaches and teams go higher. And you can't just suddenly make it big, it'll take time, no matter what you'd do. They'll watch the World Cups and stuff when they want, FIFA shouldn't even have to worry about that. It's on you, not the rest of the world or FIFA, since I think it's pretty clear they won't start radically changing football just like that.
But back on topic: ... still interesting. Goal :P |
