I never said anything about a goal. USA tried and tried and tried and tried and Algeria had some chances to them up too. The excitement lied in the fact that the 2 qualifying spots were wide open until the very last second of play in each game. One single goal on either game had the potential of changing the qualification spots. The late goal was just the icing on the cake.
Like Moongoose said, if you don't get that it's very likely that you never will. Just realize that Football isn't the sport for you and off with your "entertainment dollar" to a hockey game. |

The fact there are qualifying spots open for the taking only makes it exciting if you have a vested interest in a team making it to the qualifying round. Since I don't have a vested interest in any team at the world cup...I could care less about which team gets the spot. The excitement of the actual game should be enough to hold someones interest in the game. I will admit the USA v Algeria game has been one of the more exciting games for me so far. |

England will need this to win. As will the US.

Whether you want to see it or not, the added tension of the qualifying spots is a part of the game and plays into the big picture. Its added things like these that no other sport has that make football unique for me and for billions of spectators around the globe. Everything that happened on and off the field of those two games just whooshed over your head.
And your statement about someone not having a vested interest in who qualifies not being able to enjoy the extra tensions of the sport is bull. Everyone here at the office was cheering for USA during the game. Not because of a vested interest in their qualification but because they were watching a team that created a large number of chances on goal, had been unjustly robbed of a legitimate goal both in this match and on the previous one, and simply put just never gave up and deserved to advance.
Like I said... off with your "entertainment dollar" and your groundbreaking ideas to a hockey game because you will never get it. |

I came into this World Cup with an open mind and they have failed to entertain me one bit. From the boring games to the bad calls to the lack luster performance from the top teams to the constant diving this sport has once again proven to me that its the most boring and ridiculous sport ever invented. I can only hope that one day they will ban soccer from being played across the globe. I hate every thing about the sport and I hate everyone who even for a second thinks this is an entertaining sport. |
you're a ing retard |

Any tournament will have the added tension when qualifying spots are on the line...this has nothing to do with soccer....so stop thinking this is something special to your sport....its the same with any international tournament for any other sport.

You see...they had a vested interest in the game...they wanted to see the USA win because of the robbed goal, the hard play, etc...so don't tell me they didn't have a vested interest. Maybe not before the game started but before the game ended they had a vested interest. You see...I could have cared less that the harder working team won the game or that the USA deserved to win because they had a goal called back.
edit: all I wanted to see was an exciting game between two teams...and as I already said, this game was one of the more exciting games for me. |

None has a system that is quite the same as Football's.

An interested that was generated by the match itself given what was happening on the pitch. People didn't have any vested interest going into the match but they did by the time it was over.
And the goal that was called back was not the reason they deserved to win. It was a really tough call to make if you understand the rules. The reason they deserved to win was because they were clearly the better team and went on full attack looking for a goal until the very last minute. |

sure...my kids will be free to choose whatever sports they want but their decisions are going to be influenced by the sports I play and watch. If they are not exposed to soccer it's highly unlikely they are going to choose that as a sport to play. |
But what about influences at school, friends, television then?
My father never played sport (only watch it on tv), but I did play football, tennis, (moutain)biking and later even squash. I would have played hockey (not ice) if there would have been a club in the neighbourhood. I mean, looking at my own youth I think my father's influence wasn't that much.
I'm happy the US made it to the next round at the end. Good for football in the US too :) |
