i dunno from just watching this world cup - it feels like the is definite favouritism towards the european and south amercian teams. italy has almost survived on it for a couple of world cups now.
now dont mistake me - obviously argentina, germany, brazil etc are full of brilliant football players and football minds - just sometimes it feels like the oldskool power teams are almost ushered to the finals at times.
imagine the usa makes it to the semis this time - not in an 'honest' way as you said. it will be so good for football in that country i wouldnt be surprised if they made it further 8 or so years later - in an 'honest' way. and thats how the game grows. |

Not the greatest of prospects IMO, as the more the game grows in the US the more we have to deal with annoying pains in the ass like ChemEnhanced. :p
I personally prefer to watch games whose anticipation is exciting for me, rather than caring for whether it'll develop the game somewhere - that doesn't affect me. |

Our star striker is hobbling through games, we've had three central defensive partnerships and two goalkeepers in three games, we scraped through the weakest group I can remember England being in and we resorted to keeping the ball in the corner for five minutes against Slovenia. Yet you think Germany are weak because they don't have a decent left back? They have only failed to reach the quarter finals once since 1938. They are the Turniermannschaft. |
I understand your point, but in the past the german teams have been much more solid, Mertesacker barely plays club football, Freidrich is a fullback by trade & Badstuber if picked got hammered by united. Their team is good, it always is, but invincible it is not. This isn't a team with the likes of Beckenbauer, Matthaus, Sammer etc and I'd argue to say it's not as strong as the one we beat 5-1.
As for our problems, I think Fabio made a mistake, King was never worth bringing, Carragher should've stayed retired and we should've brought Jagielka & Gary Cahill, who whilst inexperienced are young, hungry and the future, same with Joe Hart. Why leave him out because of inexperience if you take him to begin with.

FknLOL!
i was actually thinking something exactly along those lines seeing the outcomes today, although i'm glad someone put it together so succinctly for me! haha :D |
I have to thank the wonderful LuNaSeA from here who found it on a forum. I'm waiting for the press to pick up on it, they usually steal everything. |

I'm rather annoyed that England, Argentina and Germany all face each other before the semis; whereas the draw guarantees a minnow into the semis already: Uruguay, South Korea, the US or Ghana. I'd rather keep the big games for later, or have an honest surprise that gets there by beating a top team rather than by luck of the draw.
Nevertheless the qualified minnows have all been playing pretty well, and all known matches so far are likely going to be close and entertaining. I'm not even entirely sure Argentina will beat Mexico!! |
No, just no. No.
This is what the World Cup is and why it's good, because teams are getting much more level and blowouts are getting rarer.
Nobody really gives a about the big teams anymore because they can all be beaten.
If the big teams are unable to perform, then they are undeserving of having "easier" match ups. They can't ride on the coat tails of their past countrymen forever.
It's insulting to those other nations to call them "minnows" and talk about them like that.
As for Australia, well played by the team. Had they played that normal formation and players against Germany, the score could have been anything.
It also wasn't a handball, the call was fine. Learn your damn rules. |

People always write the Germans off like this. Before the 1986 World Cup final Beckenbauer burst out laughing during an interview and said "Can you believe we've got to the World Cup final with these players?" In 1974 when they won they were massive underdogs to the best Dutch team ever. In 1954 they'd lost 8-3 to Hungary in the group stage but beat them in the final. I don't remember the 2008 or 2006 teams having good defenders either.

All well and good, but they're still the problems we have to deal with. We're playing different systems and combinations in every game and we have obvious mental fragilities. |

Problem is the German defence looked unreliable and shaky against both Ghana and Serbia (Aussies didn't try to attack) and the offence doesn't seem strong enough to compensate for that. Normally I would even say England is the favorite, but they have played so horribly this WC that it might actually be Germany. Still I don't have much trust in this team.
And btw, the real "Turniermannschaft" is not Germany but Italy. Their skill to play like but advance with a late goal, scored either by a penalty from diving, from total offside or by an unbelievable error is legendary. Italy can win such a tournament and not play a single good game. |

| You only think that because Italy always beat you. Generally the German team has done much better in tournaments than Italy. |
