And quote of the wc

"This World Cup is like World War II; the French surrendered early, the Yanks arrive last minute and we're left to battle the Germans."

Lol, but it's going to take some doing. If england don't come out fighting and just scare the of them early and keep then it's all over.

Rooney's ankle is apparently OK - a bit sore but nothing too bad. Apparently he'll be fine to play Germany.

How much do you want to bet that Beckham/Victoria will do something to get themselves splashed all over the media (for those that don't know, Beckham has made sure that every time there's a possibility of Rooney making the front page of tabloids for non-negative or positive reasons he does something to relegate rooney to the back page).

In fact why the is Beckham even there? There is a zero chance of him playing (hopefully for ever now) for England.

FknLOL!

i was actually thinking something exactly along those lines seeing the outcomes today, although i'm glad someone put it together so succinctly for me! haha :D

These figures are complete bull and you know it. For a start a huge chunk of that market in the US is from sports that are only watched in the USA (baseball, basketball, hand-egg and to a some extent hockey) and therefore have no base for argument in a discussion about what football could be worth to the US market.

hahahaa hand-egg... i know it was said before but just made me laugh again, good work rann :p

so true comments about beckham too, the guy is a world-class tool, while the rest of him belongs back in the cess-pool...

should be interesting to see how the games tonight go, to see who the netherlands gets! Hopefully not italy or something (although it'd be a good time to get them realistically...) :nervous:

The objective is to take some of that money people are spending on other sports and get them to spend it on soccer instead. People only have so much money to spend on sporting entertainment so you need to find ways to get that money from the other sports.

it's like wading through treacle talking to you.

Basketball, baseball, hand-egg and hockey fans aren't suddenly going to stop watching their sport to watch football. You would have to expand the sports market in the US and the commercial powers that control sport in the USA will never let it happen, as football is predominately controlled by Europe or south American interests.

The other thing that you can't seem to grasp is that football, in football loving countries is not supported by TV - most of the teams make their operating money from ticket sales for home and away matches. The US is decades away from being able to have that model work. Until that happens it will only be show games and foreign games that are money earners and even then the bulk is going to those foreign teams for rights so the incentive for the US to get in to it is way less as opposed to US based sports where they make more money.

Proof: LA galaxy saw a 80% drop in ticket sales when Beckham left (and I think he's a **** anyway) and were worries about going bust so CAA and 19 management forced him to go back to avoid a messy and huge law suit. US football can't sustain itself on a club level so at present cannot have a decent league, and won't generate all the revenue that goes along with it.

So no, they are not going to change the game for a market that can't even self sustain.

Tool doesn't even begin to describe him. I swear to god that guy is just blessed with good fortune because never before has such a talentless knob made so much money.

I think the Orange will get through and it would be good to get italy now before they start to do their end of tournament confidence thing.

Our star striker is hobbling through games, we've had three central defensive partnerships and two goalkeepers in three games, we scraped through the weakest group I can remember England being in and we resorted to keeping the ball in the corner for five minutes against Slovenia. Yet you think Germany are weak because they don't have a decent left back? They have only failed to reach the quarter finals once since 1938. They are the Turniermannschaft.

Group H is pretty interesting right now. If the Swiss beat Honduras 1-0 and Chile loses 2-0 to Spain, the Chileans are going home.

A team with six points not moving on is rough.

I'm rather annoyed that England, Argentina and Germany all face each other before the semis; whereas the draw guarantees a minnow into the semis already: Uruguay, South Korea, the US or Ghana. I'd rather keep the big games for later, or have an honest surprise that gets there by beating a top team rather than by luck of the draw.

Nevertheless the qualified minnows have all been playing pretty well, and all known matches so far are likely going to be close and entertaining. I'm not even entirely sure Argentina will beat Mexico!!

I agree, it's a bit sad, but there's no real way to prevent this, is there? Unless you go back to having a second group stage or something along those lines.

At the end of the day, a memorable knock out game will be memorable, no matter if it was a 1/8 or a semi final. I'll always remember Argentina - England in 98 (quarter final I think) but didn't lose a second thought on Brazil-Turkey (a semi). The way I see it, Uruguay is most likely to be in the semi, which would have a cool old-school feel to it. Ghana being there would mean a whole continent going mental, and the US being that close would also be a nice sensation. Don't need another South-Korean "march" though, they had their 15 minutes of fame back in '02.

this south american/european football elitest attitude from supporters/umpires and officials really grinds my gears.

tis the global game - and this is part of globalisation - get used to it.

How is any of that elitist? I'm just saying neither Uruguay, Ghana, the US, or South Korea are one of the top 4 teams in the world, and one of them will get a bit of a lucky break to reach the top 4.

Evidently the gap to the powerhorses isn't very big as they've proved in the games they've played so far, and I respect their worth as all 4 teams have been playing well and could perhaps beat a Germany or an England fair and square in a good day. Doesn't mean I can't state an obvious fact, in fear someone from a football nation with less tradition will get butt-hurt.
