I was very impressed how Spain managed only one goal despite dominating the entire 2nd half from a boat load of excellent scoring opportunities. That open field 2 on 1 miss was special. The conservative play of Germany in the first half playing not to lose instead of taking chances was also extremely entertaining. :stongue: |

It's so painfully obvious when Americans talk about football that they think they know what they're talking about, but they really don't. Case in point: All you people who don't think Spain played well, that it was a boring match, that Spain didn't dominate, that they're not a great team? Not dissing Germany here i love them to death but Spain played some of the most beautiful football i have seen all year, all the while getting the goal when it mattered most. Well I'm British, played football every single day of my school life and a lot after and even still occasionally now and I believe that was a match.
I was watching it just hoping one of the teams would do something other than play defensive, possessive and most of all, boring, conservative uncreative football. The goal was the only highlight in that match and it came at the right time to spains credit but the rest of the match was not what you expect of two of the greatest teams in the largest tournament in the semi final stage - If you think it was worthy of that then all I can say is I have higher standards of the game than you.
And I agree, it's certainly not about goals or shots on target. |

There's your problem my friend, why should everyone like that flavor of football?? I hate it, that's why I cheer for Germany and not Spain or Italy. I prefer seeing a 3-2 game, than a 1-0 game where a team whores the ball back and forth from defence to mid. |

So you think an open game with missed chances is a better game then a team controlling another one?
Which could be rivaled that Germany did not challenge enough to 'open the game' and Spain didn't constantly attack Germany by putting the ball on goal?
I think at the end of the day, all that it comes down to is winning the cup. This would be a very different match up if it was a South American cup where you can expect full on rush by both teams who have a notorious game play to carry the ball in.
As a yank (and Yankees fan), I quite enjoy the comfort of domination, enjoy the look of frustration on the faces of podolski, klose, ozil, and schweinsteiger..I thought it was a brilliant match and I've never played organized soccer in my life. I can watch and understand the game in it's fundamentals, it certainly raises my excitement and I do feel despair as a fan, so there is definitely an issue with perspective here, one which some people can not accept and automatically dismiss the effort and match as subpar. |

Who is this girl anyway? She's ridiculously hot. I saw the photo posted once and someone said it was Schweinsteiger's girlfriend, but it was never confirmed. |

Yep, she's his gf, name is Sarah Brandner. I swear, there just is nothing better than a hot girl fetching beer. :eyespop:
And about the game, clearly the main problems were that ing octupus and Müller missing. Apart from that Germany shat their pants at the thought of being close to the final, previous rounds they played easy and for the sake of playing, now they were all tense and inhibited.
They tried to win like Switzerland did, and it could well have succeeded had they scored from one of the few chances (yes, Kroos, I'm talking about your pathetic miss from 10 meters). Maybe it wasn't even what Löw had in mind, but clearly what the team did. It say that was , they should have tried to attack, no matter how strong Spain allegedly is. Better go down in flames than choke on your own timidness and fear. The were instances when they came forward a little, but you could really see how players didn't want to attack and were like "oh, let's better not try too aggressively".
Spain is good, but people overestimate their dominance. It's always what the opponent allows, and the Germans just allowed to much, instead of going with the more risky, but certainly more entertaining strategy of sticking to their own strengths and not thinking about their opponent's.
Now I hope Holland wins. At least their clubs aren't all broke. :)
Oh, and the third-place game: With Müller back and Germany again playing for nothing but fun it'll be something like 5-0 |

I have to say this, Spain is the team I was expecting to become the finalist far before the tournament started. I didn't expect it from NL up to the last matches before the start of the World Cup, then it became all clear to me. NL - Spain in the final (I'm dominating the pool of my friends also atm ;))
So far in the tournament Spain has pretty much dominated every other team (last night was no different) except for the match against Chile in the first half and Paraguay to a lesser extent. Chile played with balls and Spain looked beatable to say the least. The Germans last night let Spain play too much of their own game. They were playing pretty much from their own half alone, which made it even easier for Spain to make some of their fabulous combinations. Obviously Germany had to somewhat play in that style, but this was far too defensive. If they went all out on attack, they would've given Spain more of what they wanted and Spain would've ripped the defence to shreds, but probably the right tactic was to play less in their own box and more in front of it and on Spain's half. A tad more defensive than offensive though (especially with Müller out).
For the final I'm expecting NL to play like they did against Brazil in the second half in terms of tactics and guts. If they don't, they probably won't take it.
In any case it will be a hard fight with the 2 teams that have lost the least in the last 2 years of pretty much all countries in the world.
Spain has only lost to Switzerland and NL hasn't lost a game since the start of the qualifications and could be the 2nd team in history to play a completely perfect tournament.
We shall see, may the best team win, and hopefully thats us :D |
Yep, heard many say against Spain they need to lean back a bit, but not too much, like Germany did. That's the only way against the team of which most people I know tipped as winner of the cup before it started.
Read today that if we win Sneijder will be next to Pele, winning all in one year: 2 Italian titles C.L. + W.C. |
