That's the best explanation I have, as well. If not color, then probably shapes. Although, I think Uruguay's flag should be more interesting than Germany's and he still chose Germany. That, of course, is from a human perspective. :p

I think the selection could be interpreted differently; look at the tentacle held aloft in a victory pose over the dutch brick, while the rest of the tentacles are down over the spanish brick.
