Here, let me spell it out in a way that doesn't sound offensive to nationalists of any sort:
It's a world cup, and I take it to be a global event. I don't feel I should be more inclined to support any given team a priori because we all live in the same planet. I've never met any of the players, and even though a particular team may be associated with my place of birth/resident, it doesn't mean my connection to them is stronger than my connection (or lack thereof) to any other group of players in that competition. It's not like I've ever met a single one of them, and my willpower is somehow relevant to the final result.
Will I support Brazil? I may, as I often do, just as I may support any other team. Hell, I reckon it's fair to say I root for all of them, most of the time :D
(Is it any clearer now? This is probably how he feels, I assume) |

I understand your point. I was trying to pick on the other user using you as a reference. I know you take a broader view on things.
The people I know that aren't that attached to their national team are like that because they were either born here in the US or because they came from Mexico when they were young and didn't have that exposure to the type of fanaticism in that country. I just have curiosity about his background. |

Broooo! Sometimes, Its okay to be cliché.
Personally, I find your fan tendencies irrelevant to the enjoyment of the competitiveness of Football.
Having a sense of loyalty to one team is nerve breaking, nail biting, eye shutting to the point where such emotions can serve as a euphoric laxative. |

Oh please, get off your high horse. As if everyone here doesnt know already that you'll throw your full support behind the team whos supporters have the biggest and bounciest breasts. |
