Methods
Participants
91 Introduction to Psychology students participated in the survey and received extra credit. The mean age of the participants was 24.1 with a standard deviation of 6.78. Of the 91 participants 69.2% were female students while 29.7 were male students. 1% of the participants did not report their gender. Of those students, 58.2% were European American, 11% were African American, 1.1% were Hispanic, 24.2% identified themselves as “other” and 3.3% did not report their race. For dog ownership, 50.5% of the students said yes and 48.1%, 1.1% did not give an answer. For cat ownership, 44% of the students said yes and 56% said no.
Results
The following data was found using descriptive statistics and descriptive frequencies. A series of happiness items were asked to the participants. When it came to happiness a mean score of 6 was found, with a .83 standard deviation. For the well being question a mean of 6 was found, with a .80 standard deviation. In satisfaction, participants mean score was 5.63 with a .87 standard deviation. Participants mean score for feeling content was a 5.43 with a standard deviation of 1.19. A mean of 5.22 was found for self-esteem with a standard deviation of 1.31. The purpose question had the highest mean with a 6.1 and a standard deviation of 1. In the post-outlook question a mean of 5.91 and a standard deviation of .95 were found. In the question regarding self-likeness a mean of 5.99 and a standard deviation of 1.03 were found. In the balanced life question a mean of 5.22 and a standard deviation of 1.21 were found. Table 1.1 shows the means and standard deviations to various questions asked in the survey.
