Backtracking insofar as all of MGS2 was spent in the same environments time and time again - it was a pointless affair. You backtrack all the time in RPG's, but it's generally for a purpose. It's far less fun when you're returning the places the fifth and sixth time solely to get a bad piece of the story.
All of which, as I'm sure you've noted by now, were really only mentioned as criticisms of MGS2.
