A lot of places, firemen are fully trained EMTs, and can therefore make the best judgment call whether an ambulance is needed or not.

Why would a fire truck..well the fire fighters be called to a scene of an accident/victim before an ambulance? Because no paramedics were around? I know that fire fighters are able to save lives but I would just assume an ambulance would show up first (aside from the cops, because I always see/hear about them showing up first). So is it because the paramedics were just out of reach?
Reason why I ask is..
My friend and I were waiting to cross the street yesterday when this man starts to walk across when there was only 1-2 seconds left to cross and he starts feeling his chest and I said to my friend " why is this man strangely rubbing his chest and arm? "And she didn't really give it much thought and I proceeded to say, " I think this man is having a heart attack" but she called me crazy and said I was talking non sense. No later than 2 seconds after I said this, and as soon as he reaches the middle of the cross way he collapses and the driver who was at the light ready to go got out to see wtf happened and called 9-1-1. BAM here comes a fire truck and 3 cop cars ( to block traffic ). 5 minutes later no ambulance..10 minutes later no ambulance (all while they are trying to resuscitate him..but still no sign of an ambulance. Finally 20 minutes later an ambulance comes but I'm pretty sure they gave up trying to resuscitate him though one fire fighter was still attempting.
We heard a few hours later that he had died.
20 mins? That's kinda weak.

Bingo. All firefighters here are fully-trained EMTs. There might not be an ambulance physically present, but patients/victims receive pretty much the equivalent care that they would if an ambulance was there.

in australia if you call the emergency number for a car accident or something of high importance, all three will turn up. It was more than likely the fire brigade was nearer the scene at the time. As for the paramedics, 20min is a fairly slack time to get to someone. Do you guys get special ambulances for people with chest pain/heart attack because we do down here :)

i highly doubt a firefighter would be able to intubate someone for instance, my understanding is they can only provide first aid in the case of an emergency. So things like CPR ect.

Poor man. I was the last person he touched and last person he talked to before passing on :( I don't like that feeling.
We don't have special ambulances. whambulances are whambulances. I've never seen an ambulance take more than 5 minutes regardless if it was a car accident, fender bender, or shooting. Every country has different procedures, I understand that now.

theres a difference between tubing someone and bagging someone, im guessing this man was bagged. Tricia, theres nothing you could of done to save him, when a heart blows it blows and if he were to be revived chances are he would live the rest of his life like a vegetable.

Not your fault poppet, if it was his time to go then I guess that's it and not much you can do about it. :(
