most people hate the amoebic blob that is the idea of American dick baggery. in reality ive convinced a few non USAers that some people here can be cool. Bush is the easiest excuse for complaints, but to be honest have you watched the news lately? how much of your local news had anything to do with events outside of your state, much less the rest of the country and much less the rest of the world?
americans generally dont pay attention to the rest of the world, why would the rest of the world need to like us?
plus its a travel issue, people whom have visited more than one are of the US like it i believe. people that visited one place with a gun shop or havent visited at all dont like it...thats the main reason.
dont be worried about whether someone likes your country, worry whether they like you or not| |
i'm not concerned about whether someone likes the states or not, i'm just really curious, i guess, as to what is going to happen in 2009 when the next pres get inaugerated (sp?). i kind of have a weird feeling that most people will be like, "well thank God that's over!" but i don't think that many new things will change.
i dunno., i'm not very political at all. i don't even vote, because i can't stand the electoral college system.
but sometimes i tend to think that really the society in the us, sometimes isn't really all that different from other western countries.
i agree with some things: i think our children are growing up spoiled and need to be spanked a few times instead of "now don't do that again", i think MTV has made people completely oblivious to what the "Real World" is really about; and i think that sometimes things are taken over the top (the bong hit thing, the girls beating each other, etc...).
but i don't think that these events are the society of the country as a whole....it's just what makes the news.
do you ever hear about the millions of joe schmoes who work 9-5, try to pay their bills, and put food on the table? all without any extra assistance from family or friends? of course not, because it isn't sensational enough.
the girl who "lost her legs" (which, it wasn't her legs, it was just her feet, if that's any consolation) on the six flags ride was news because it doesn't happen every day. do you ever hear on the news about the millions of people who go to those theme parks (pay an overpriced fee + food + parking), have fun, and enjoy themselves? of course not.
i guess what i'm boiling down to is that i think the news (tv, radio, print, etc...) doesn't portray a daily average life of someone living here. you don't really get that experience until you've lived that life yourself.
When i was living in Germany for a little bit, i found it absolutely awesome that all the german students my age did the same we did (as far as teenage antics go).
i dunno, i just don't think we're all that different in the long run.
i hate it when i ramble on. |
