I've read that hallucinogens temporarily lower the "noise" threshhold for your brain; details and sensations that your brain would normally ignore as "irrelevant" suddenly come into sharp focus. When I'm sober, I can focus in on a single really tiny feature of an image, for example, or on some bodily sensation I have. On acid, it seems like my brain is trying to focus extremely closely on everything at once: every little line and curve that goes to make up an image, every note played by every instrument in a song, every bodily sensation I'm having, etc.
Sensory overload. Which leaves me with this strange feeling that I've experienced a year's worth of sensations in one night.
