2005
At a book signing/public questionnaire in Seattle.
Me: "Having DJ'd heavily yourself in the past and now having kind of moved on, what do you think about the current set of popular DJs, like Tiesto, who sell-out stadiums to 20,000 people for a whole night?"
Moby: "I don't really think I'd feel good about DJ'ing in front of 20,000 people. Most of the records wouldn't be mine, and they're cheering for me when really, they shouldn't be cheering for me at all. I didn't make the record, why should they love me?"
2008

One of my favorite artists, too. :( |

Dude. Moby. ing. Sucks.
Its over. He sucks. Look at his beatport chart.
He's completely lost the ing plot.
This is the same guy who in his CD inserts was raging against society, the destruction of nature, politics, etc.
The dude lost it. |

| Also, if I ever play in front of that many people I'm wearing something a little more interesting than some generic running shoes, loose jeans and a plain t-shirt.... |

Play was the peak. 18 was good, not great, but good. I enjoyed bits and pieces of Hotel and I thought when he played here live for the Hotel tour that it was a fantastic show.
But s sake, the last two or three years... ugh. I could stand to see and hear that same from Armin, Tiesto, etc., because they've always been doing it. But to see someone who used to be incredibly anti-corporate/anti-"the man", who was an amazing producer and pretty decent DJ just do a total 180... .
I guess that sounds like the normal case for a lot of artists, though. I'm just more disappointed about this because I used to be the biggest fan and he is probably the most influential artist in terms of putting me 'where I am right now.'

He was the first truly electronic based artist I heard. Really my first exposure to dance music. Some of his older works are so full of depth I just don't understand how he can now put up that beatport chart.

When he released Mulholland around the same time as Hotel I figured that there was hope. But Christ, I heard his Beatport chart the other day and wanted to vomit. |
