Hey Evo, curious when I ask this but what kind of monitors are you listening it through. |
Usually on SM9s - however in this case im in work so just my ipod headphones :P - but even on these that mid-bass is too dominating for me
i do that quite a bit for my own tracks, ill listen on my macbook speakers/headphones and see how the mix sounds minus sub-bass - good way to see if anything in the mix is poking out excessively or just swamped altogether
edit: its more how wide that mid-bass is, maybe if it was narrower it might fit better |

Ah Gotcha! No, Thanks for the feedback,I really do respect your opinion.
I would tend to agree with you on the bass. I do the same and try to listen to my tracks on almost any piece of gear I can.
In this instance however, it is sorta a "bass" track.
As well, to be quite frank, I also listen to tracks in the car which I have loaded with 2 12' JL-Audio 12W7's. Although these are beasts and can take it (and yes, I also realize that the ordinary joe only listens on their computer/ipod )I actually feel very underwhelmed when listening to this track in my car.
I also enlisted a friend of mine who does nothing but bass tracks himself and he felt underwhelmed as well.
I guess I am truly curious to which direction to take it. Today, it is true...majority listen to highly compressed music on their computer, streaming or ipod. I guess I am going to have to conform to that standard /sigh
Oh..and when you mean mid bass, are you referring to the sub or the saw? |

Quite like this one, I think you are right in saying it needs another little groove addition just finish off the sense of chugging.
Like the old school character and timing of the synths and stabs. |

Ironically I can see that track work well with a proper big room kick . It sounds nice, but indeed needs something to make that groove work better. |

the reason your possibly underwhelmed whilst listening to that track in your car is that i think that bass is more in the mid-range rather than "bassy" - i was thinking you could employ some sidechaining on that sound to make the track groove a bit more |

Man, you lot are a tough crowd. This WIP is ing wicked - one of the better ones in this entire thread. I love this sort of prog (yes, maybe I love prog from a couple of years ago but if it aint broke (and let;s face it, a lot of recent "prog" is very broke) then don't fix it).
I love the vibe on this one. It's summery prog without being obvious or contrived. Good work Domesty! |
yeah it's nice, only thing is the kick kinda overwhelms a bit, bassline sub would be brought out more |

sounds a little harsh or distorted to my ears but maybe thats the sound you are going for? |

| Evo, Honestly I was trying to sound up to date, thanks for your comment, I will keep it in mind. |

That tail on the kick is deep and loud. It pumps quite a bit, I like that usually but its a bit too much. I can literally feel it push my eardrums inside on my headphones and they're not even put on loud yet. Maybe shorten the end of the tail, or at least put a volume envelope on the kick making the end of the tail less loud would help.
Maybe the kick in its entirety is just a tad too loud compared to the mix but I find that really hard to judge on a headset. |

Good melodic work here.
I think you copped-out on the rise especially that pitched up part just prior to the drop. I'd say make it more professional.
This thing about harshness and distortion is an interesting subject for me just now. A lot of top rock tracks make huge use of distortion, so some listeners have an appetite for it, although it has to be the 'right' distortion - natural sounding. I suppose there is a fine line between nice fuzzy distortion and harsh fried egg. Your tracks distortion is ok I think.
I cannot comment on the kik lows as I cannot hear well on my work pc monitor.
Mise I reckon you can make a more interesting bass for the intro parts, it's a little static. Maybe a little syncy reso sweep on some notes would add interest? |
