been tweaking this wip, referencing some track but im still far off no matter what I do, the mid range is muted and the kick has problems still. cant polish turds, need a new mixing style perhaps.

I like this...and just a suggestion with yours to do away with. But, curious if your "swing" isn't dissolving because of your kick progression. Meaning, if you were to take out the 2nd and 4th kick just going kick, snare, kick, snare instead of kick,kick/snare,kick,kick/snare four on the floor drive.
Dig those pads and the keys add a really nice element. What my ears craved was some separate eq'ing on those higher frequency tones to let the delay you have on that stabby arpy backing tone shine more. I can hear the delay just dripping and just needs a tad bit of a lift. Possibly panned a little left OR right a hair and let the stereo shine a bit.
Your low frequency tones (Sub/Kick) in Mono? I got a little stereo spread there
If I could also suggest adding some side chain compression to that sub to bring that kick out and give it that pulsing ducking tonality.
Just a thought but I will say that this is probably (even though it appears you aren't happy with it) one of your better composition and arrangements. Honestly, with just a little lift on the production side, this could be a really nice track man |

agreed with all that, eqing has been a nightmare will try again after a few days rest maybe. I need to do some more tests, im having that midrange problem, will try moar sidechain but I try to cut back on sidechain when I can but I usually cant I guess as i've seen the same critique echo from others regarding that.
sometimes I surprise myself that im able to output anything at all and I get satisfied easily or unable to proceed, but alas that is life. |

Hi Phil, after few runs of this production what strikes me the most is lack of groove in this WIP, I mean, something which will drive this vibe in it. At this point I believe, bass line would be a good place to start from because I can barely hear it at the moment - melody vise is worth of farther development.
Cheers,

Thanks for that D. You are correct, on that particular bounce I noticed the very thing. Reason being it was saturated by the sub. When I adjusted the sub I noticed that I was still getting some clip on my low freq so I lowered the kick. This specific bounce was about 3 edits ago and a LOT has come (and gone) on with this track. Swing and groove are much more prominent and evident now. I'll throw a revised version later on in the week. Thanks again bud |

Perfect! The reason I asked was that I had a question about the bass tone I am using atm. In Ableton's native Instrument Rack is a prest Bass tone called Juno Oh Bass

This has a HEAVY sub level and a very crisp mid range (with the cutoff maxed as shown in that image)
The problem I am having is I am trying to dilute that sub to go with the mids....it's not draining even with EQ. Should I just go with another sub because,damn.. I love that Juno stabby bass tone but I am almost tempted to cut it all the way out and that mid range is probably being diluted because of it being in mono |

Yeah, I can see...., at this point what I usually do (if I have a problem which is taking me more than 5 min to resolve) swapping it for another bass sound - so far (almost exclusively) I'm using F9 Toolkit for Ableton V1_47 DX which has quite large selections of different kinds of basses with quite large tonal characteristic scale. Let me know if you need little more info on typo of basses I'm using.
Cheers,
