with the highs. here is a snapshot of your track https://ibb.co/bwZKGm
and the one you posted for reference: https://ibb.co/hNEfNR
so yours is a little dull in the highs by comparison

That is indeed how I've mixed it. It's been something I've been experimenting with...on more recent mixes. Noticed on well balanced tracks that, to me, sound great at lower volumes, but sound very harsh around 70-84 spl. So I did a bit of dipping and rolling off on some of the resonance peaks 5khz ->. I wanted a mix that sounds smooth at high volume.
*shrug*
Also, I preferred "Catch You" the best mix-wise from your listed stuff. I understand not judging a wip, but the state one's current ears are in matters ye? |

no worries dude. at the end of the day these sorts of threads are great because you get other peoples opinions, which of course you are free to take or leave :) |

Indeed. Also nice to share thoughts and conceptions on what one's doing in a mix. Might give someone else other ideas, or change how they perceive something for the better.
What I gathered from everyone's feedback reflects my own concerns. My monitors have false low-end extension that makes the low-end harder to work on, and usually weaker.
A majority of people (I don't just take my mixes here :)) tend to prefer a louder mix at lower volumes. Picking the correct bass for the range you'll be placing it in is important, and I'll be paying attention more to this in the future.
I still feel I have a long way to go with regards to music writing and production quality. That's why I've liked these forums : Honest, critical feedback. The improvement never stops it seems. |

Beefing up melody at 0:56 could be better imo. It sounds too simple and predictable imo. Drums and bass are nice. Overall, you had much better works, sorry :/
I should not judge the mix quality :), it seems balanced to me, a bit too loud. |

One of my goals for 2018 is to break out 6 old tracks that were never finished. Lofty goal since a lot of these are two years or older. Pulled this one as I always dug it.
Pre mix and still needs some work but it is getting there.
Any things that stand out I should pay attention to?
|
I like the beginning. Melody is nice, a bit cheesy though, sounds are nice. Low end is missing, otherwise mix is clean. Drums are distracting for me in areas with a lot of snare pumping. |

this is still rough as and i know the mix is all over the place and needs loads of work but i like where it is going as a work in progress
doing this kind of music is challenging for me but definitely a direction i want to go in

This is cool. I would use more that resonating sound at 0:45 and play with it on top of this. |

How is this? Is it interesting enough so far or to samey?
I hope that the main synth is not to sharp, i'm not sure yet.

Yeah, I can hear you Gordan - I was simply checking out a new version/style for the same track which I'm working on already (can hear below) - I was after more energetic and dynamic vibe which at this moment sound monotone and uninspiring/boring melodically but trust me it would/will change for better :D

Musically, I like this one. Its a style I'd listen to. It has a potential to be very lush yet hypnotic in some elements.
Mix wise - I don't think the stereo imaging is correct. the low mids sound too wide, so they lack the firmness. The pad - it is very "out there" and sounds like it is a bit drowned in reverb and too wide for it's own good, and it just falls out of focus. Perhaps if it had a mono low-end layer added to it would anchor it more.
Not a fan of the delayed bass(not the static one) sound at all but that might just be a matter of taste. I have a feeling that it was supposed to work as a hook, but it just doesn't IMO and frankly it is a boring sound/set of notes.
As I said I like the track, it reminds me of some of Hiroshi Watanabe's older work on Kompakt , and he is one of my all time favorite producers, so there is that. |
Hey, dude, thanks a lot. I know i'm bad at mixing but very honored to remind anyone on anybody and especially on their favorite producer :) |

Everything after 2:00 is great. If you can find a way to better lead in to that break / moment, I think song from a musical standpoint will be in really good shape. I like the open saw lead at 2:25, juicy and sounds good on top of the bass, and it seems like a blend between chillstep and trance there for a brief moment, and reminds me a little of deadmau5.
Maybe decentralize the arped pikes/plucks a little bit to give the main lead the central position?
After 2:00, with a bit more in the way of percussion and supporting arrangement, I think it'd be a nice tune. Melodic progression feels like it's missing a little somethin' somethin' to really make it sound unique though.
Best of luck. |
