Time for a n00bl3r question,I suppose. I'm new to teh Berries.. ;)

I'm currently running Desktop Manager v4.5.

My Pearl 8130 has OS 4.5.0.77.

Can/should I upgrade to new v5.0 of the Desktop Manager software?

(Don't wanna jump up if going to this higher software version is gonna cause issues on my Pearl that's only running a 4.5.x.xx OS version.)

Thanks for tha feedback. :toocool:

Live NBA games now on iPhone, Android

Not about to be outdone by baseball, pro basketball is getting in on live streaming to mobile phones.
The National Basketball Association will announce its first set of applications that let fans watch
games live on a mobile device Thursday. NBA League Pass Mobile will be available for download for the iPhone,
iPod Touch, and Android phones starting Friday, the third day of the league's regular season.
BlackBerry users will have to wait a bit longer, the league saying that application will arrive "by the end of the year."
The NBA follows Major League Baseball, which introduced its iPhone- and iPod Touch-compatible
live streaming application in July, and a beta version of an Android app Wednesday.
The NBA's application will cost $39.99 and let users watch up to 40 live games per week via their
smartphone, though local TV blackout rules will still apply. The app also has an option to watch
some games on demand for up to two days later and comes with game alerts and live stats.
Currently there is not added benefit if customers are already subcribers to the NBA's League Pass TV package.
But bundling the two is something the league is looking at for the future, said Bryan Perez,
senior vice president and general manager of NBA Digital.
Besides the live streaming app, the NBA already has its Game Time and Game Time Lite apps on
Apple's App Store, the Android Market, and Blackberry App World. The Lite version is free and comes
with scores, stats, standings, and team schedules. The $9.99 Game Time includes some on-demand video,
game highlights, live game alerts, stats, and access to an NBA Twitter feed.
Perez said the league has made an aggressive push into mobile this year, mostly because it knows who its fans are.
"We have one of the younger demographics of the major sports leagues," he said. "As we look to the future of our fan base,
they're consuming content in a much different way, and in many ways the mobile phone is the connection to the world for the youth market.
If we want to cultivate fans and be innovative, we need to follow our fans where they're going."
More screenshots after the jump.

Desktop software versions will never cause issues on your device, only your PC, when non-compatible, but that's very rare. Go ahead and install it. Nothing is embedded within the desktop app, so if you have ipd backup files saved (they are always external to the app) and you have issues with a new desktop software build, you could always revert to a previous build, and the ipd files will never be affected.

The rule is, always backup your data. If you ever have an issue with desktop software or a new BB OS (device software), you can always revert and restore your data from a previous backup.

Verizon Droid iDoesn’t Beat iPhone on Browser, Apps, Multi-touch or User Interface

Did Verizon and Motorola forget to include a few things in their iDon’t attack ads, like iDon’t render web pages as slowly or badly, iDon’t arbitrarily restrict the amount of apps users can install to 256MB, iDon’t fail to implement multi-touch, and iDon’t have a worse user experience.

We can’t blame them, of course. They were focusing on the iPhone’s weaknesses, as the geekier among us (nitpickers included!) would have to admit, and not the Droid’s. It was their ad, and fair enough.

However, for those considering the Droid vs. an iPhone, we should lay all the cards on the table. Sure the iPhone lacks a physical keyboard (that irks some users, pleases others), doesn’t have Google Maps Navigation (yet), doesn’t match all the specs, and has issues with App Store approvals (though that doesn’t effect most users). But what about the Droid?

(And no, we don’t mean that horrible devil-red eye graphic that’s kind of the opposite of “not evil” and makes that incessant “DRRROOOOOOIIDDD” chime pretty much indistinguishable from “REDRUM!”)

First, in the perfunctory Browser Battles, it turns out the almost two month old iPhone 3.1 Safari is still king of the mobile mountain, according to MobileCrunch:

On the popular web-standards test known as Acid3, the iPhone scores a 100/100 while the Droid caps out at 93/100. [...] Once you’ve grown accustomed to pinch-zooming, the level of accuracy provided by tap-zooming alone simply doesn’t cut it. [...] The iPhone browser is also considerably faster, with page loads completing anywhere from 15-30% more quickly with both handsets on WiFi.

Second, we all know the Android Market doesn’t have as many apps as the App Store, but maybe that’s a good thing since Android 2.0 still doesn’t fix its app space limitation, leaving Droid with a paltry 256MB for apps according to AndroidandMe.com:

Google does not support installing apps to the SD card (and likely never will), so developers are limited in what they can create. [...] For most applications, we want a small file size to limit the download times. When it comes to 3D games though, we need a ton of space for all the high-res textures, audio, and video. [...] Have you seen all the awesome iPhone and iPod Touch games? Hardly any of them would fit on an Android phone.

This problem, of course, also plagues the Palm webOS and BlackBerry platforms. NokiaExpert and ZDNet’s Matt Miller’s been told it’s a security issue, but does that matter to end users when iPhone’s can go up to (almost) 32GB?

Third, if you’re a fan of the iPhone and iPod touch’s (and Magic Mouse’s!) multi-touch, don’t think the Droid will have your fingers covered. According to Engadget:

As you have probably heard (or guessed), there’s no multitouch on this device. That’s clearly an issue with Android 2.0 and choices that Google is making about user interface

Fourth, the user interface, while definitely an improvement — and maybe even a refreshing change for some — still doesn’t rise to level of usability as the iPhone. Like MobileCrunch (and every other review we’ve seen), we’ve given our iPhones to toddlers and they’ve been able to use them well.

That’s still Apple’s killer app. And that’s likely why, even after going all in on Droid and throwing BlackBerry under the bus (even canceling their BOGO!), Verizon still wants the iPhone…

Motorola DROID spotted in fine GSM form (video)

While the newly launched DROID is keeping us plenty busy, we'd be remiss if we didn't hep you to this hands-on video that's recently popped up on the YouTubes. Of Vietnamese origin, we do believe that this is the first GSM version of the phone we've caught on tape. All seems to be going well until about 2 minutes 7 seconds, when the viewer encounters a "considerable lag" in between gesturing to open the app drawer and the event itself. But don't take our word for it -- see for yourself after the break.

**************
You won't have an iPhone Killer anytime soon, lots of factors that need to be combined that is pretty hard for any company to catch up at present time.

1)Hardware Power
2)OS + Web Browser + User Interface
3)3rd Party Support
4)Pricing

IMO #3 is the most imporataint key, phones follow the old skool video game system theory, the system w/ the most 3rd party support will win.

Compitation is healthy for everyone and the consumers will benifit from it. Look at the Palm Pre before it came out? Apple felt threaten and kicked their hardware & OS to the next level. Who knows what's the next iPhone will be since everyone is stepping up with their hardware now, they could use that Samsung Arm Core A9 Dual Core chip which faster then the Intel Atom CPU and uses 60% less power.

[b][size=4][color=4]GSM DROID with multitouch pinch-to-zoom demoed on video hating America[\b][\size][\color]

The GSM flavor of Motorola's DROID, or Milestone as it will be known in Europe, has multitouch built-in to the UI. For reasons we can only assume have something to do with an unspoken intellectual property agreement between Google and Apple, the US version of the user interface lacks multi-touch features like pinch-to-zoom even though the underlying 2.0 OS supports multitouch events. However, the video of a GSM DROID headed to Europe clearly shows this feature at the 3 minute mark. No really, see for yourselves after the break.

Anyone know of a way to bypass the GPS feature where he can access the games?

no in way!

for my phone, it turned out 3.1.2 got loaded on my phone without me knowing it... that was my problem before Vegas. The guy in Vegas I went to jailbroke it, but could not unlock it, as that fix isn't out yet. So it now works like an ipod touch, so no phone for now :(

Let me know if you can find me a custom restore I could use for my 2G, so I could try that. The one I found didn't work.
