Rovio feels the burn of Android fragmentation, plans 'light' version of Angry Birds
So, it's real after all, huh? Android fragmentation is making its way into the news again, and this time it counts. Rovio, developer of a little-known title called "Angry Birds," has just penned a new blog post detailing the night terrors that have come with coding a single program to work on a cornucopia of platforms. In the weeks since Angry Birds was released to Android users everywhere, the company has been inundated with performance complaints, mostly from users with older / underpowered Android devices or phones using Android 1.6 or earlier. A laundry list of smartphones have now been added to the "unsupported" list (shown in full after the break), but thankfully for you, a "lightweight" version of the game is in the works. According to Rovio, that build won't reduce the amount of levels (or amount of fun / frustration, for that matter), but will instead be optimized for dawdling processors and Android versions that have been helplessly malformed by carriers. Nice going, guys.
(Was Steve job's lying about Android's fragmentation? Think about it)

Serviced iPhone 4 units get Torx screws, but why?
iPhone 4 color conversions have been a popular phenomenon ever since the delay of the white iPhone 4 and today it appears that Apple is taking a stab to stop these conversions from occurring. This process may have even begun last week when we reported that Apple may behind the removal of several white iPhone sales on the bidding site eBay. The ease of black to white iPhone 4 color conversions lies on the user being able to remove the iPhone 4s screws from the bottom of the device.
The screws on the bottom of the iPhone 4 were fairly simple to remove and this allowed for quick front and black plating color conversions. Now, it appears that Apple is replacing their original iPhone 4 screws with something much tougher to unscrew, Torx. The Torx type of screw is known to prevent tampering and is fairly difficult to unscrew. Applefs latest MacBook Airs even feature the Torx screw-type due to the extremely fragile batteries the device carries. Additionally, some internal sources have let us know that this is in fact a new Genius Bar policy.
What is very interesting about what is going on here is that Applefs promotional images since the iPhone 4 launch have shown the Torx screws. This makes us think that Apple scrapped Torx screws at the last minute or something along those lines.
Apple appears to be making this screw-type change on iPhone 4s they either exchange or repair at Genius Bars at their retail stores. It is currently unknown whether Apple is also making the change for new units being sold to customers through their normal sales channels. Either way, this change by Apple demonstrates their strict opposition to users converting the color of their iPhone 4. So folks if you want a white iPhone 4, Apple truly wants you to wait until Spring.

Carriers Threaten Apple Over Plans To Embed SIM Card In Future iPhones
Last month we had reported that Apple is working on a programmable, custom-SIM card that could be embedded in future iPhones.
The SIM card solution designed by Spanish company Gemlato would allow iPhone buyers to select the operator of their choice while purchasing the iPhone. The embedded SIM would then be flashed with all information needed for it to function on the selected network.
The governing body of the global GSM players, the GSM Association (GSMA) recently announced that a task force would be formed to find out how such technology could be adopted. Representatives of various cellular networks have been asked to compile a list of requirements that they think would be needed to bring this proposal to fruition in a way that everyone stands to win. The deadline for this is by January 2011. If all goes well, we might see the embedded SIM laden iPhone by 2012.
Since the solution would reduce the relation between phone users, many felt that it would not be welcomed by most operators.
According to the Financial Times, several European carriers are against this entire idea. In fact, they have already (internally) threatened to withdraw subsidies on the iPhone if Apple does implement this technology on the future iPhone. The bone of contention for the operators is that Apple here is trying to control the relationship between the consumer and the network. As mentioned earlier, if this plan is implemented, people could buy their phones and sign up on the Apple website for their network of choice and start using the phone right away without much involvement of the network.
Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar claims that based on his sources, Apple has dropped its plans for now. Kumar reports:
"Apple is relenting," said Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar. "They are now completely backing away from their plan to take the carrier out of the equation," said Kumar, who discovered the change in plan after talking with Apple suppliers and manufacturing sources.
What do you think about the embedded SIM cards? Tell us in the comments.

Soon, You'll Be Able To Pretend Kill Other Parrot AR.Drone Owners In A Game While In The Real World
(Attn: Nick)
I don't have a Parrot AR.Drone like Eli "Hollywood" Hodapp does, but I wish I did. He seemed to connect with the device on a deep, fundamental level and love bloomed as the two grew closer together during their private review sessions. But with all man-toys, that fondness and that spark can fade as familiarity sets in. Ah, if only there was a two-player game that supported the Parrot AR. Drone. That would make Eli and the masses love again
Oh, hey, how convenient; there will be such a thing! Parrot is telling us that a new AR game is on the way, and it's one that seeks to test players' flying mettle both in and outside of an App. Crazy!
AR. Pursuit as this title is called, is a "two-player pursuit game" that will have a duo of AR.Drone-equipped people shooting it out in a digital space while flying their Drones in the real, McDonald's-infested world we live in.
Here's how it works: the game uses the Drone's front-facing cameras and renders in bullets and missiles when players choose to fire. To avoid game-death, players will need to maneuver their drones in various directions, making the real world a game board as opposed to a grim place of death and fast food.
The game, which hits November 26 at $2.99, can be played indoors and out provided a stable Wi-Fi connection can be accessed. Parrot recommends that you use those indoor stickers if you plan to play indoors, and obviously you'll want to pick a place that's large enough to move an RC craft around in.
The future! Let's get with the Bacta tanks already, please. My knee hurts and I don't want to go to a doctor. Thanks.

Apple ditches integrated iPhone SIM-card plans?
We recently reported that Apple was exploring plans for an integrated SIM-card system for future versions of their iPhone which would essentially remove the carriers from the iPhone-selling process. Just a couple days ago we reported that European carriers are furious over Apples exploration into this technology and have threatened to not subsidize future iPhones because of it.
Well it looks like Apple has gotten a little worried over the European carriers threats and according to The Telegraph have abandoned plans to put integrated SIM-card systems in future iPhones. Oh, and Im positive Apple is going to love this quote from a senior executive at a European carrier about the situation:
Apple has long been trying to build closer and closer relationships and cut out the operators. But this time they have been sent back to the drawing board with their tails between their legs.
