RIM and Apple gain more smartphone marketshare at Nokia’s expense
Pledge your smartphone loyalty to whatever brand you wish, but the fact of the matter remains that more and more people are leaving the Finnish juggernaut Nokia in favor of devices from RIM and Apple. During Q4 2008, Nokia’s overall market share fell from 50.9 percent to 40.8 percent and smartphone sales dipped a whopping 17 percent to 15.6 million units. As always, one company’s loss is another’s gain and no two companies highlighted this fact more than more than RIM and Apple. Both more or less doubled their smartphone market share, which now stand at 19.5 percent and 10.7 percent respectively. Apart from the big three, sales of HTC devices were up 20 percent while Samsung saw its sales increase by an amazing 138 percent to 1.6 million units. Still, they each only command modest stake in the smartphone market at 4.3 percent and 1.8 percent respectively. We’re hard-pressed to think of a time where there has been such a large shift in market share for any mobile phone segment, but then again this is the first economic meltdown to occur during the age of the smartphone which has in turn meant fewer new models to snap up.

iPod Touch 2G gets “pwned for life”
After working loooong and hard on Apple’s second generation iPod Touch, the iPhone Dev Team released a little tidbit of information that is sure to please all you 2G Touch owners out there. It looks as though the Dev Team has identified a fatal flaw in the bootrom that allows the device to be pwned for life. Once jailbroken, always jailbroken — regardless of what firmware updates Apple throws your way. The firmware patch that provides this untethered jailbreak has been released to the masses but it has not yet been bundled into QuickPwn or any other Pwnage Tool. Early adopters, hit the read link for all the juicy details. Those of you who aren’t quite so Bold, sit tight for the impending QuickPwn/Pwnage Tool integration.
From the DEV TEAM
The iPod Touch 2G is now another member of the “pwned for life” family. It has a fatal flaw in its bootrom that means you will always be able to pwn these devices no matter what firmware updates come along. This is the full, untethered jailbreak, something that iPod Touch 2G users have not had before today.
Those of you who hang out on IRC or were able to read between the lines in the various blogs, forums, wikis and twitters may realize that we — and importantly, that’s a that’s a collective, cross-team “we” :) — had been hoping to hold onto this full ipt2g jailbreak until the next version of the iPhone came out. That didn’t happen, but maybe it’s too late for Apple to fix the bootrom in the next iPhone.
The raw patch to the firmware that transforms the “tethered” jailbreak into an untethered one was released here but it’s not yet packaged up into the PwnageTool or QuickPwn flows. But other threads there are pulling together tutorials and other tips for those of you anxious to try this out now. For the curious, the hole itself is explained here. There’s also a “pen and paper” analysis that helped the hybrid team venture transform the hole into an exploit. Hopefully that will be up for viewing soon too, if only because of its geeky beauty :)
Anyway, to all those iPod Touch 2G users out there who waited so patiently through all the various incarnations of the jailbreak for Apple’s latest device — welcome to the family!
For the rest of us, the jailbreak “cat and mouse” game will continue in the summer with the next iPhone. And the carrier unlock “cat and mouse” game continues as ever. :)

iBluetooth Released - First iPhone App to Allow Users to Transfer Files via Bluetooth
iPhone Developer, MeDevil had announced in January that he was developing iBluetooth which would allow users to transfer files from their iPhone to other Bluetooth devices. He had also published a video showing an iPhone running the app sending and receiving files between a Mac and a Sony Ericsson handset.
The good news is that MeDevil has finally released iBluetooth making it the first iPhone app for the jailbroken iPhone to allow users to transfer files from their iPhone via Bluetooth, a feature which has been missing from the iPhone since its launch.
The iPhone comes with Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (short for Enhanced Data Rate) built-in. But it only supports the Bluetooth Headset Profile and Bluetooth Hands-free Profile 1.5 which is a major limitation.
The most commonly requested applications in the Bluetooth stack by iPhone users are A2DP wireless stereo support and the ability to transfer files to other bluetooth devices.
iBluetooth will allow users to transfer any file via Bluetooth to other devices. It also has a built-in file viewer which will allow users to send any file on their iPhone.
Here are some of the screenshots of iBluetooth's user interface (courtesy iSpazio):
iBluetooth is available for 3.99 euros and you can install it on your jailbroken iPhone via Cydia. medevil hopes to bring features such as A2DP, Serial Port (needed for bluetooth GPS) etc in the future.
Another group of iPhone developers are also working on a project whose ultimate goal is to get all the missing Bluetooth profiles working on the iPhone. They had released an iPhone app called SweetTooth couple of months back that demonstrated the work they had done on unlocking the full capability of iPhone's Bluetooth.
As always let us know if you try iBluetooth in the comments below.
Thanks a ton Egypt for the tip and following up on this story for us!!!

Konami releases new Metal Gear Solid Touch screen shots; wait almost over ... coming out NEXT WEDNESDAY!
With Metal Gear Solid Touch dropping next Wednesday, Konami decided to push out one more round of screen shots in an effort to rekindle interest as the company prepares to finally release its first crack at MGS for Apple handsets. Konami also reiterated release details as follows:
A special ‘Advance Edition’ of Metal Gear Solid Touch containing the first 12 stages of the game is scheduled for release on the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch in March of 2009. The final release will follow with eight additional stages of gameplay, and will be available to existing players via a free update on the Apple App Store.
Metal Gear Solid Touch, officially announced back in December, had plenty of MGS fans excited until gameplay details were released. For one reason or another, interest quickly faded. Judging from the game trailer and screen caps however, MGST is going to be a pretty solid display of the iPhone / iPod Touch’s gaming capabilities as the title is fairly graphics-intensive for a mobile game. It will be interesting to see how MGST is received, especially at $9.99 a pop, when it finally drops next week. Recap: Metal Gear Solid Touch, meh, 12 levels on March 18th, eight more later, $9.99. Anyone excited or has the ship already sailed? Hit the jump for more screen shots.

iPhone OS 3.0 is coming, March 17th
We just got the announcement, iPhone OS 3.0 is coming. Set your clocks, mark your calendars. It's going down March 17th. Apparently, we'll get a sneak peak at the new OS, as well as a look at a brand new version of the SDK. Exciting stuff indeed, and we'll be there live at 10am PST (1pm PST) with the liveblog. Apple's calling this an "advance preview of what we're building," so we're not expecting anything ready to go as of the 17th, but hopefully this will allow developers to start building toward future functionality (hey, how about some push notifications?), and presumably users won't have too many months to wait after that for the real deal.

The only thing I don't like about this app so far is that you can't discover bluetooth devices around you. I turned it on and my boss was able to see my phone and send me a ringtone, but I wasn't able to see any devices. There doesn't seem to be a spot in the app to discover any devices. Maybe I just didn't see it I dunno. Ideas?

Yeah I don't really have a use for it, I never use bluetooth, I just wanted to see if it works or not.
I didn't pay for it, it's just on the demo licence haha
