Kids don't want toys anymore, it's gonna be an Apple Christmas

When it comes to Christmas/Holiday shopping this year, its advantage Apple with kids abandoning traditional gifts and toys in favor of an iPad or some other slice of Cupertino-designed tech gladness.

The most recent Duracell Toy Report claims two-thirds of teens (13-16-year-olds) want Apple products, such as the iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch.

The firm’s Toy Report found that 17 per cent of five to eight-year-olds want an Apple gadget for Christmas and 50 per cent of nine to 12-year-olds put one of the company’s products on top of their list this year.

Gadgets appear to be popular with both boys and girls as an equal number of both sexes listed these products as their three must-have items this Christmas.

Duracell quizzed 2,138 parents and children and found that three out of five adults buy gifts that will keep their youngsters quiet throughout the Christmas holidays.

The top 10 toys for Christmas 2010, according to the report are:

1) iPhone 4 (14%)
2) iPod touch (13%)
3) iPad (12%)
4) Kinect for Xbox (6%)
5) Zhu Zhu Pet Hamsters / Kung Zhu Hamsters (5%)
6) Flip Video Camera (4%)
7) Toy Story 3 Jet Pack Buzz Lightyear (4%)
8) PlayStation Move (4%)
9) LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 Video Game (3%)
10) Barbie Video Girl (3%):D

Apple confirms white iPhone 4 devices not available “until this Spring”

So, so sad. According to Reuters and Digital Daily, Apple has confirmed to that the white version of the iPhone 4 is still a far ways off. The official quote?

"We’re sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone yet again, but we’ve decided to delay its release until this Spring."

We’re not sure what to make of it. We previously heard from a senior Apple source that Apple’s fixed the white iPhone manufacturing issues about a month ago. Does this mean they are timing it with the mythical Verizon iPhone? If not, and it does come out in the Spring, why release a white version at all at that point?
Apple will most likely have another model out by June/July anyway.

(Might as well not come out with the White IP4, I say Apple should issue a trade in program.

Sorry girls :p)

Apple Acknowledges Security Flaw; Will Be Fixed In iOS 4.2

We had reported yesterday that some members of Macrumors forum had discovered a security flaw in iOS 4.1.

The security flaw allows someone to get access to the iPhone contact list, make calls and also send an email or MMS even with passcode protection using a combination of a sleep button and fake emergency call even if it is locked with a passcode.

Some of our readers have reported that they were able to reproduce the bug in older iOS versions as well.

Wired.com is reporting that Apple
has acknowledged the security flaw and issued the following statement:

“We’re aware of this issue and we will deliver a fix to customers as part of the iOS 4.2 software update in November.”

Until then here's some advice from our fantastic readers: Don’t leave your iPhone unattended and you’ll be fine.

(I did the password bypass bug to every co-worker's iPhone, their jaw's all dropped. Works with iOS 4.0 even, but not FW 3.0+)

The PlayStation Phone

It's hard to believe that what we're looking at is real -- but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you've long been waiting for. As we reported back in August, the device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform. The device snapped up top (and in our gallery below) is sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches. Looking almost identical to the mockup we hit you with this summer, the handset does indeed have a long touchpad in the center which is apparently multitouch, and you can see in the photos that it's still bearing those familiar PlayStation shoulder buttons. For Sony buffs, you'll be interested to know that there's no Memory Stick slot here, but there is support for microSD cards.

The particular model in these shots is still in prototyping mode. As such, the unit doesn't have a custom skin (not even SE's Timescape design seen on the Xperia devices), and is said to be rather buggy. We're digging into more facts as we speak, but it's likely that much of what we reported earlier is still accurate, and though the device could still be headed for a 2010 release, 2011 is looking much more realistic. Still, there's a lot of time between now and the holidays... so keep your fingers crossed!

Apple, Gemalto working on integrated SIM for next iPhone?

Moving from regular SIMs to micro SIMs for the iPad and iPhone 4 was a fairly user-hostile move on Apple's part, seeing how it made moving between an iPhone and virtually any other GSM device quite a bit more difficult; the official explanation (for the iPhone 4, anyway) was that there simply wasn't room for a regular SIM, but that seems unlikely considering that you're only saving 10mm of length, 3mm of width, and 0mm of thickness. A more plausible scenario is that Apple viewed micro SIMs as a way to get ahead of the industry curve a bit and make it unpleasant for users to try to share an iPhone line with other devices, a concept that gets at the core of Apple's mantra of owning the entire ecosystem from end to end.

But could they be trying to take that concept another step further? GigaOM is reporting a rumor today that Apple is working tightly with security firm Gemalto -- you know, the SIM guys -- to integrate software-reconfigurable SIMs right into European iPhones that would be activated on the carrier of your choice using an App Store download. Why European models? Multiple carriers offer the iPhone in a number of European countries, so distribution is a bit more complicated there than it is in the US, though it's a reasonable leap to suggest that the same integrated SIMs would be use on new North American iPhones as well. From Apple's perspective, it's a win-win: trying to use your iPhone line with another device would be akin to pulling teeth, and more importantly, Apple wouldn't need to worry about bundling carrier-specific SIMs with devices. In fact, the move would make Apple's (and the consumer's) interactions with the carrier entirely virtual, all the way from manufacture to activation. Seems like the plan would require an extraordinary amount of buy-in from carriers who've become increasingly suspicious of Apple's goals lately -- but then again, they managed to get carriers to suddenly and rapidly deploy micro SIMs en masse, and if anyone could pull this off, it'd be Steve's boys and girls.

(This is their method to stop unlocking maybe?, this might be bad news for the rentention users)

Great news for Rogers customers! They recently changed their Hardware Upgrade Eligibility Program (HUP) for eligibility at month 30. After customers didn’t take that news lightly it now seems Rogers has listened and switched back to have eligibility on month 24.
