What bugs me :whip: is AFAIK all the wireless service providers in Canada insist on a 3 year contract for the iPhone, while in USA it's 2 years. Who wants to be stuck with a 3 year old phone, considering the rapid pace of smartphone technology?

An alternative now for iPhone junkies is maybe to buy it direct from Apple (possibly it's unlocked as a bonus), use it for a year, then sell it and get the new model. Probably you could get a good plan rate from the wireless companies since they're not subsidizing the phone.

Big question is how much will a used 1 year old iPhone be worth? Apple.ca indicates direct purchase is coming but no price announced yet.

So, this means that a jailbreak for iPhone 3GS 05.12.01 models and iOS4 does not yet exist, correct?

05.12.01 is your baseband
3GS jailbreak is only for the 1st bootrom w/ pwnagetool

You're eligible for upgrade long before the 3 year contract is up...

I've only had my iPhone for 2 years and I'm getting the 4...

And I geeve about the 3 years because really, where am I going to go???

I've been with Rogers for 20 yeas because they are the best of the worst for me and I don't think that it's going to change anytime soon...

Apologies, I confused baseband with bootrom.

I did a little digging and according to this website my 3GS does not have the old bootrom as I purchased the phone less than two months ago (I know I can verify that I have the new bootrom by putting the phone into DFU mode). So, I won't be updating my iPhone until a new jailbreak is released :)

Breaking News: iPhone 4 Already Jailbroken

It didn’t take that long. iPhone 4 that was officially launched earlier this week has been successfully jailbroken.

Comex, developer of popular jailbreaking tool, Spirit jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.1.3, iPhone OS 3.1.2 has discovered another userland jailbreak in iOS 4 similar to the one used in Spirit jailbreak.

iPhone hacking experts planetbeing, chpwn and MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team have managed to get root access on iPhone 4 using comex’s userland jailbreak.

planetbeing was the first to announce the breaking news on Twitter:

Think I’m the first one I know about to get a root shell (and SSH) on iPhone 4, using poor @comex’s code (since he has no iPhone 4)

MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team has confirmed the news and has followed it up with a screenshot of Cydia running on iPhone 4:

Congrats to @comex for another userland JB http://is.gd/d5N6I <– hi-res Cydia via @planetbeing & @chpwn iPhone4s

The discovery of the new exploit in iOS 4 should also be great news for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch (MC version) users with the new bootrom as the tools will jailbreak them as well.

However, this does not mean that iPhone 4 can also be unlocked. iPhone 4 comes with a new baseband, which will require Ultrasn0w to be completely rewritten to work on iPhone 4.

Update:

MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team has published the screenshot of full root access on iPhone 4, which is possible only if it is jailbroken:

We’ll let you know as soon as we’ve any further updates so stay tuned here at iPhone Hacks or follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our RSS feed.

Thanks Jasmart for the tip!

Jobs: iPhone 4 demand won't delay Canadian sales
updated 07:15 pm EDT, Sun June 27, 2010iPhone 4 won't repeat iPad international delay

Steve Jobs was active in e-mail again this weekend as he assuaged fears that the Canadian iPhone 4 launch would be delayed. Having been asked if extremely high sales would set back the launch a month as it did the iPad, the Apple executive simply answered "nope" to an iPhoneInCanada reader. The company has only given out a broad July target date so far and hasn't given signs that it will arrive early into the new month.

Suspicions have been raised that Apple may be facing production setbacks tied to availability of the iPhone 4's Retina Display, but these haven't been confirmed. The shortfall has more often been attributed to an all-time high 600,000 pre-orders and launch day lineups that in some cases left visitors without a phone even after waiting through business hours.

Apple faces a rare supply issue in Canada as it could serve as many as five carriers on launch -- Bell, Fido, Rogers, Telus and Virgin Mobile -- each of which will need its own separate hardware lock for subsidized versions. <---- yeah right lol

Just in case anyone's wondering, sjobs@apple is a joke account. It's not Steve Jobs. :stongue:

My buddy contact him through this email yrs ago, complaining about his laptop. Apple sent him a load of stuff, due to some CSR's attitude, soon after he got an email from another dept to not contact him anymore and direct your inquires to them.

I'm sure it's his email, high chances the email have been re=edit in someways
