iPhone DevTeam And GeoHot Discussing Exploits For New Baseband

A few weeks ago , we told you that a possible exploit for baseband 5.12.01 was found and unlock might be on its way. And according to a ModMyi thread, we are almost there. In the very near future, baseband 05.12.01 could be unlockable for those of us unfortunate enough to be stuck in this position.

Now it doesn’t necessarily mean 3.1.3 will be worked on, but its good news none the less for those unfortunate users, and for the possibility of a group effort for the next unlock between GeoHot and the DevTeam. Discussed in an IRC channel, GeoHot and the DevTeam’s MuscleNerd, share some thoughts on the exploits they have found, and by the looks of things, might actually team up to dish out an ultimate serving of Jailbreaking goodness.

GeoHot explains that there is an exploit that he had previously discovered and wanted to use with the release of blacksn0w, which has now found to still exist in 3.1.3. He goes on to discuss how he had originally wanted to implement this exploit in blacksn0w but opted to go with an open source route, which makes sense to keep things slightly on the downlow.

It sounds as though GeoHot and MuscleNerd (Dev Team) may possibly be working on the same exploit, and if that’s the case, it would be incredibly logical for them to team up rather than releasing two different exploits, which in the end could just cause more greif when upgrading in the future.

Sherif Hashim Found Baseband 05.12.01 Unlock Exploit(Posted on 02.12.10)

Sheriff Hashim, an iPhone hacker found a new exploit for the baseband 05.12.01 Sheriff handed the exploit over to very well deserved hands, yes we are talking about iPhone Dev Team. Musclenerd also confirmed that the crash is promising and they are working on porting this crash in to an unlock. As usual no ETA and no promises from Dev side. Sheriff now re-exploring 5.12.01 baseband for another crash.

Musclenerd stated that “Sheriff Hashim found a very promising crash in the new baseband. He’s put in a lot of work looking for crashes over this past year, and he’s still looking for more! We’ve started to look at his crash but it’s a long road between any given crash and a fully working unlock, and we couldn’t put an ETA on it even if we wanted to. It’s not even guaranteed that an working unlock will come from this particular crash — it’s just too early to tell.”

Note : it’s a good news for those who accidentally updated their iPhones, but it may take time for final release. May be Dev team save this crash for future use. They are made by different developers, and take different approaches to jailbreaks. I've tried both; blackrain was fast, but not as stable. redsnow was very easy as well, and works flawlessly.

So my SIM card died today, and I had to take the phone to Bell so they could replace it. I didn't want to bring them my awesome jailbroken machine so I restored it to factory 3.1.2 first. When I came home I used redsn0w on my Mac to jailbreak it, it does seem a little bit more snappy now. I don't know how the new jailbreak method affects the battery yet though, but I'm hoping for good things :)

From my previous version, I had jailbreak on 3.0.x, and it was slower. Right now im on 3.1.2, and I concur that it is much snappier than before. Maybe it's because I installed less crap, who knows. But w00t

The LONG awaited update for QuickLock now has the lock sound!

So my new 3gs has the screen comming loose on one corner of the device, and there are dead pixles, and hair line cracks at the screws on the bottom. Showed an apple guy at the store the other day and he agreed it would be covered under warrenty but I would need to make an appointment and return.

My device is jailbroken and unlocked. Origionally its a Fido device, and I am with Rogers.

Question to the warrenty guru's

Is there any way to detect wether the device is jailbroken or not?

Let me be specific.

If I should delete any Cydia related apps from the springboard, including cydia, and get rid of any other evidence of a jailbreak, would it not still be jailbroken, maintaining by blacksn0w unlock, hence fooling the Apple tech that I indeed have a rogers phone, and would there for receive a new rogers phone?

Im sure once the tech reboots the device, they will know what happened, but none the less, I would be out the door with a new phone.

Will they try to reboot the phone for any reason infront of me before agreeing to a warrenty exchange? Im sure they will open it to check for water damage.

I would really like to get a rogers phone in exchange for this fido device if there was any chance of that.

Or would they know what carrier the device is anyway from the serial number?

Any thoughts? Am I kinda screwed?
