Facebook launches Places, location check-in, discovery

Facebook is currently holding a media event (it’s still going on), but we wanted to update you since it’s pretty interesting and has to do with mobile devices — they’re launching that much-rumored Foursquare-competing product, called Places. It is to help you with three things: help you see where you are, help you see who’s around you, and help you see what’s going on nearby (discovery). You can tag friends with you while checking in to locations, and Places will automatically check you in and create a news feed story showing where you are. Facebook also has opened up API access to Places and Gowalla is one of the first partners on stage demonstrating how they are going to make sure of Places. Foursquare just got up on stage, too — Facebook Places is the new hotness. Yelp just took the stage after Foursquare, we’re pretty impressed.
Facebook Places will be available starting tonight in a new iPhone application update, and in Facebook’s mobile touch website for advanced mobile devices.
Updating…

There's a setting to allow high bit streams in Shoutcast yes, but there was no high quality streams listed for Digitally Imported, only low bit streams, because that's a premium feature with DI.
Now you can get the high bit streams from DI, with their app, when you pay for their premium feature.
The thing that sucks though, even if you pay for the premium service, it won't stream the high quality unless you're connected via WiFi. I might get 3G Unrestrictor and see if I can get it to work with that. THEN i'll be happy lol.
UPDATE: The DI app works great with 3G Unrestrictor to allow high quality streams when on 3G. Data useage is a little less than 1MB per minute. |
Thanks for the info! Maybe I'll get this 3G Unrestrictor. |

How to prevent your friends from checking you into Facebook Places

Facebook Places not only lets you “check in” to various locations (a la Foursquare or Gowalla) but it allows your friends to check you in as well, which could be a little creepy. Luckily for those of us who prefer to keep where we are private, our good friend Phil Nickinson from Android Central tells us how to “just. stop. it.”:
You can disable that “feature” now by going into your privacy settings. Hit the “customize” link, scroll down to the “things other share” section, and disable the “Friends can check me into places” feature.”
Fortunately, the first time anyone tries to check you in you’ll get an email notification, but if you prefer to do your own dang checking in, thank you very much, follow Phil’s advice up top. |

I'm torn as to what I should do when my IP4 arrives - turn around and resell it and keep my Desire, or the other way around. I'm really, really loving the out of this Desire, but we'll see. |
Once you use the iPhone for awhile, start playing around with a bunch of useful apps, jailbreak it to do even more, you'll start loving it. It's the perfect phone and gadget in one lol. |

iPhone 4 cuddles up against telescope, snaps impressive moon closeups

What's a boy to do when he desperately needs a portfolio full of galactic imagery of his own doing? In most cases, we'd suggest he grab up a telescope (or one of these), the biggest DSLR he can find and a planetary expert who knows a thing or two about exposure. But thanks to a mod that's becoming more and more common these days, it seems that you can replace the latter recommendations with an iPhone 4. Yep -- Apple's latest smartphone, when paired up with a miniature tripod mount and a telescope, can apparently take lovely shots of our dear moon, and if you're struggling to actually spot it, we hear that Planisphere app is pretty handy. Hit the source links if you're scouting some inspiration.
