Greenpeace slams Apple over datacenter pollution

The report entitled “How Dirty is Your Data: A Look at the Energy Choices That Power Cloud Computing” analyzes power consumption and pollution generated by super datacenters operated by Apple, Facebook, IBM and others. Apple, whose latest 500,000 square feet datacenter in North Carolina is either operational or about to flip the switch, ranked last in the report. Most datacenters use “dirty energy”, Greenpeace said.
The North Carolina facility will triple Apple’s power consumption to a hundred megawatts of electricity, which is enough to power about 80,000 homes in the country. The organization criticized Apple’s use of coal to create electricity, which pollutes atmosphere. Gary Cook with Greenpeace summed it up:
Many companies treat their energy consumption a bit like the Coca-Cola secret formula, because they don’t want competitors knowing how much they spend on energy. Consumers want to know that when they upload a video or change their Facebook status that they are not contributing to global warming or future Fukushimas.
It gets worse because power consumption stemming from cloud computing is expected to rise four times by 2021. Read on for the list of top environment offenders…
Greenpeace said Facebook should “UnFriend Coal”, referring to their first company-built datacenter in Prineville, Oregon which relies heavily on coal-based electricity. Facebook is thought to be building a new $450 million datacenter in Western North Carolina. The state is also the home to Google datacenters. The top five datacenter polluters according to their reliance on coal-based electricity are Apple (54.4 percent), Facebook (53.2 percent), IBM (51.6 percent), Hewlett-Packard (49.4 percent) and Twitter (42.5 percent). Twitter’s new datacenter in the Salt Lake area is also heavily dependent on coal-produced electricity.
Interestingly, the organization singled out Amazon, Akamai, Google and Yahoo – all heavy cloud-focused companies – for their use of cleaner energy sources in datacenters. For example, the search monster said yesterday it would commit a $100 million over the course of twenty years to secure hundred megawatts of power from a wind farm in Oklahoma. Apple is rumored to be revolutionizing datacenters the way they innovate their gadgets and they recently hired eBay datacenter executive Olivier Sanche and Microsoft’s datacenter whiz Kevin Timmons

(You're criticizing Apple and Facebook of using dirty power and it's gonna cause a future Fukushima ... The question is, WTF were you during the Fukushima disaster? How come you weren't there to stop the dumping of the contaminated water?
Go yourself Greenpeace.) |

Android gathering location data too, researcher develops harvesting tool

As enraged as you may or may not be over the fact that your phone is tracking your location, you have to admit… it’s a pretty interesting story. The Wall Street Journal has filed a new report stating that both Apple and Google are collecting location data from their smartphone users — deflecting some of the public outrage in Google’s direction as well. “According to new research by security analyst Samy Kamkar, an HTC Android phone collected its location every few seconds and transmitted the data to Google at least several times an hour,” writes the Journal. Researcher Mike Castleman has developed a program that will harvest and parse location data stored on your Android device. The script isn’t quite as user-friendly as its iOS counterpart — you need root access to your device and some command line experience (as opposed to just clicking on a pretty icon and seeing your coordinates on a map) — but it will present you with a formatted location list. Castleman notes that the code used to collect location is “no longer open from Google” and that the data collected gets “pruned” when new location information is added. “Following the latest days internet outrage/overreaction to the revelation that iPhone has a cache for its location service, I decided to have look what my Android devices caches for the same function,” Castleman writes. If you’re interested in trying to squeeze the location information from your Android handset, hit the jump. The necessary links are waiting for you.

I wonder if Android has a similar feature/bug? |

From what I know, all phones have this feature. It’s supposed to be secured and not accessible like this at all.
Android wise, it’s always transmitting your data to Google for marketing purposes. That’s why the OS is “free” for the manufactures and carriers to use. Google is make some serious cash with Android.
Of course you can disable this and all those spybots with the right app and tweaks. |

There's your answer sir.
The app is supported by ads, running through the iAd network and most likely had a code error or wasn't connected properly. |

As far as I'm aware, this was stuck there because of the free app. Respringing should fix the issue but if I were you I'd just wipe out the app that stuck it there in the first place.
Ugh.
I'd lose my if I started seeing ads on my silky clean Homescreen. :stongue:
