Limera1n iOS jailbreak released, Windows only for now
Geohot is back, and has just released the latest iOS jailbreak. The jailbreak is untethered which means you don’t need to plug it in everytime you want to turn it on. It works for iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G on iOS 4.0, 4.01 and everything after that.

The jailbreak is sort of still in beta and doesn’t include that one-click-jailbreak feature from past releases. Oh, and it’s only for Windows at this time – Mac and Linux coming soon. If you really want to jailbreak you may want to wait for Chronic’s Green Poison. The Chronic dev-team has let us know that the untethering feature is “unstable right now” so take caution. WHOA! Geohot just pulled the download link: We still haz it, get it here. – AGAIN: This jailbreak is apparently not stable so back up don’t bitch to us. |
Meh, I can wait one day. |

lol lots of nerd drama going on in the past couple days. been following this pretty closely. i don't fully understand the politics behind the various jailbreak camps. definitely seems like geohotz pulled the rug out from under the devteam for the shatter/greenpois0n thing.
btw, what's the difference between the devteam and the 'chronic' devteam?
not sure if i want to try limera1n on my 3gs or wait for some feedback.. definitely don't want to brick the thing. |

Limera1n jailbreaks the iPhone, iPod touch running iOS 4.0 and 4.1, angers dev community

Looking for a jailbreak for your iPod touch or iPhone running iOS 4.1? Your chariot is named limera1n -- assuming you're willing to risk your device on a software developer showdown. The infamous Geohot just upstaged the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team by releasing a reportedly buggy beta exploit of his own, which you can find at our download link immediately below. It only works on Windows at the moment, hacks only official releases and iPhone 3GS isn't supported right now, and it claims to be an unpatchable, untethered release for those of you who appreciate what those terms mean.
As you can imagine, rival developers aren't terribly happy that Geohot's back in the limelight. MuscleNerd (of the iPhone Dev Team) claims that limera1n will re-lock iPhones that were unlocked by his team's ultrasn0w software, and recommends you skip limera1n, but the main reason the iOS hacking community is angry at Geohot is because if more than one exploit is released simultaneously, Apple can fix them both in one fell swoop. By releasing first, Geohot has allegedly forced other teams to decide between the good of iPhone users over the short term (by releasing a different, more stable exploit) or over the long term (by saving their exploit for future use) and so far it looks like both teams have chosen to prolong the fight -- the iPhone Dev Team is asking folks to withhold its Shatter exploit, and Chronic Dev Team says it will modify its greenpois0n jailbreak to use Geohot's hack instead. What a weird, wild world we live in.
Update: How might this work on an iPad, given that beta versions of iOS (like 4.2) aren't currently supported? Good question. We've struck all references to iPad accordingly, until the powers that be figure it out.
**************************
Geohot has just released limera1n to jailbreak iOS 4.1 and iOS 3.2.2.
We had reported yesterday that he had discovered a new bootrom exploit and was planning to release a jailbreak tool called limera1n that made use of it soon.
Limera1n RC1 will jailbreak iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, the iPod Touch 3G and the new iPod Touch 4G.
Geohot has posted the following details on his website:
limera1n, 6 months in the making
iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G
4.0-4.1 and beyond+++
limera1n is unpatchable untethered thanks to jailbreakme star comex
Geohot claims that he has released limera1n today a day before the release of greenpois0n by the Chronic Dev team because he wanted them “to do the right thing”.
He has currently released the limera1n RC1 for Windows users and is planning to release the Mac and Linux version shortly.
Please note that jailbreaking your iPhone may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk. Please don’t forget to backup your iPhone before you proceed. You can refer to this post for instructions on how to backup your iPhone.
If you want to unlock your iPhone then do NOT use limera1n. Dev Team will be releasing PwnageTool that will preserve the baseband while updating the iPhone to iOS 4.1.
We hearing reports that it might not be properly tested so our advice would be to wait until we hear some positive feedback.
But if you're brave enough and willing to take the risk then you can download limera1n from this link.
Please don’t forget to let us know how it goes.
Update 1:
Geohot has just updated the post with the known bugs:
•3GS new bootrom is broken fix pending
•some people need to restart to get the Cydia icon to show up after installing
Update 2:
Limera1n prompts you with some simple instructions to jailbreak your iDevice. After you have successfully jailbroken, search for the Limera1n app and install Cydia - the App store for jailbreak apps. After installing it, restart your iDevice.
If you have problem launching Limera1n app or Cydia doesn't up even after restarting then try jailbreaking again.
Update 3:
Joshua Hill (aka p0sixninja) of the Chronic Dev team has tweeted that they will incorporate the exploit used by Geohot in limera1n in their jailbreaking tool - greenpois0n that they were planning to release tomorrow. They might not be able to release it 10:10:10 GMT tomorrow. But it means that they will preserve the SHAtter exploit for iOS 4.2.
Thanks everyone for the feedback, keep them coming. |

Only Skype runs in the background for some stupid reason ... Other apps are in a frozen state, and I repeat ... apps sitting in the multitasking docks are not running in the background.
Stop getting confused ppl |
Another exception is Waze GPS. It also runs in the background... basically any app that needs to monitor always changing data on a regular basis. Skype needs to monitor incoming calls. Waze still announces turn by turn directions while running other apps. |

Streaming radio w/ sound of course and Navigation w/ the gps arrow in the corner, for turn by turn instructions.
Communication apps are not running in the background though, whenever you exit you're done w/ the app. But, you're still logged in to their servers as "online" and whenever someone is trying to contact you, their push notification server kicks in to tell you. This was intro'ed in FW 3.0. |
