Very intresting info about another flaw of Android I never realize ...
"Fragmentation is more of an issue but not the biggest one. The bigger issue is the differences in hardware. Different CPU's, GPU's, screen sizes, and screen resolutions make it much harder for developers. That is the reason games haven't taken off like they did with iOS.
iOS is going to be my next phone OS as well. I'm tired of have to root and flash ROM's to get things to work decently because the factory ROM's are bloated and just in general junk. I shouldn't have to flash a ROM and kernal just to get adequate performance and battery life. Maybe I'm getting old but I just want things to work out of the box the way they should."
(Don't get me wrong, I like Android and my statements are not towards the OS.
It's the whole Android culture I dislike ...
They "think"
1) they're ELITE
2) the OS is truly Open Source
3) they're the techie Gurus of all, since they "customize" everything and etc.
You can take one hardcore user from each side of Android and iOS, I bet you iOS user will indeed have more knowledge then the Android user. Most of them fight their battles with the above statements I've listed, but they don't even know they're defending and what's the truth behind everything.
The countless debates I have with many Android users all end up the same, regardless if they're the so called ELTE or intermediate users. I've school'ed them to the point they have to "google' it on their Android devices on the spot to confirm everything.) |
Your message is a bit funny, if not ironic. You claim ios users to have more 'knowledge', but in what exactly? How to make toast? How to unlock a phone? How to torrent? When you claim to be 'schooling' people, at least be specific about the topic.
Second, if you make a statement, that the other person is unfamiliar with, how else are they going to confirm, or refute your claim? Your statement would be like a prof high-fiving himself for making his students look in a text book for information. Is that really something you should brag about? Hell, I say good on the person for taking the time to verify something, rather than completely denying it (like mac users, and their claim of virus').
Your whole post smacks of elitism, which is the very thing you are railing against.

As for the views of android and fragmentation.
"work out of the box as it should". That statement means different things to different people, it's purely perception. The phone, with custom firmware, works 'as it should' to the manufacturer, it may not to you, but that is what they saw as their vision.
I had this argument with a developer here at work, when I called iOS broken. I said, I want to be able to plug my iphone into a computer, and just drag and drop. Same thing with file browsing on the phone itself. I don't want to have to go through this special program, to me that was broken. He said no, that is a feature.
Fragmentation is absolutely an issue but:
a) apple is not immune to it
b) it doesn't matter as much to most end users.
Apple, has how many products currently in the market? 3gs,4,4cmda,ipad,ipad2, and a bunch of ipods. They have similar specs, but not the same. Plus, their OS versions are different, based on users upgrading, or what is available to what device when. Also, different carriers allow different options, further fragmenting the community.
When most people buy a phone, they are content with what comes on the phone. It is the small minority, that keeps up with Google IO, and latest release of the OS, to get the latest features. I would love have the latest version of android, and that's probably why I am going to buy a Nexus S.
The most important thing to consider, is choice. With android you get all the choice you want. IMO being able to buy a phone with a 4 inch screen, has been the biggest improvement to the usability of a phone. It has been way more important than having the newest OS version. With apple, you are completely stuck. No difference in the physical design, features, upgrades anything. |

So I got a phone call today from my Service Provider.
Apparently, "unlimited doesn't mean unlimited." I have been using "too much data" yet THEY WONT TELL ME HOW MUCH I HAVE USED.
Anyone know an app that tells me how much data goes up and down?
They asked if my phone was "modified" and if I was "tethering," I just acted like I had no idea what she was talking about.
I hit on one of the girls from last time I spoke to their customer service (which is in the Philippines) and she added me on FB. I just asked her a bunch of questions regarding what they know and what they don't know.
Sucks that they are already messing with me already in under a month!
:whip: |
From the sounds of it; you're using a unofficial carrier for the IP4 and most likely using one of those UMB plans with an APN configuration. Since you did the something on AT&T, when you were with them previously.
Unlimited Data plans are built for smartphones and they're softcapped at 5-6GB; anything past this limit, they will warn you, then they have the right (since it's stated with many carriers) to throttle your speed until the next billing period. That's why most carriers would just state their limit to avoid nonsense.
UMB are plans made for QMDs, they use barely any data and the phones are formatted for sites that are WAP enabled. Plus their hardware and screen size are not able to produce the full web experiences. They do use the same type of data as every other phone out there, it's all about the APN gateway to gain access.
Using the method of UMB plans on smartphones have been around for ages and everyone does it, but it's different method of usage to avoid getting detected. You have to be very careful and try not to abuse data, since in this case we have an IP4 as the prime suspect. The IP4 uses the most data out of every manufacture out there. Your unofficial carrier detected the insane amount of data transmitting from your "phone" that is not possible for a QMD. Also tethering on the IP4 is even more insane, especially if the data is being redirected to a computer. AT&T will be using this detection for their unofficial tethering plans that are being abused on all phones.
This UMB APN method has been going on for ages with Rogers and they've found away to detect it live, cut the service and redirect you to suitable data plan.
Also, since you're so secretive with your carrier ... it wasn't so wise to allow the CSR to access to your Facebook network as a "friend'. There are tons of pics of your jailbroken IP4, with the carrier name changed and physically "blocked" within the picture. Maybe she'll be the one to report you, instead of your other so called friends :p |

There is NO way I went over 2-3gigs.
I know that for sure. I have my wifi on at home, and I haven't tethered that much when I'm on the road.
I'm still waiting to hear back from Ana the Pinay girl to see what she says.
I am paying 45 for unlimited EVERYTHING. The E71 uses pretty much the same amount of data as the iPhone. I don't know why I am getting picked on lol |

I'm stating the "hardcore users" have more knowledge with hacking, modding and decoding the OS, sorry with my vague statement. The general dumb ass iSheeps that can't even operative the basic function of a microwave, out number the dumb ass Android users by far. Which I've seen far too many and it's quite embarrassing to be honest. I too really wish people would do their part in researching the problems they have, instead of bugging ppl to find the answers. Doing a quick Google search will indeed guide you to the right redirection. I've given a lot of respect to ppl who helped out each other here, I too have to dig deep to get the info when I've tried countless of hours problem solving. At times I maybe frustrated with "advising" ppl here, only if the topic has been covered previously and they are too lazy to scan the thread. I don't mean to be rude or be mean in any way or form and always, try to stay humble with ppl who may not know what to do. I will indeed be very harsh on the ppl who; previously had no clue whatsoever and as soon as they start learning "some' minor things, their entire ego turns into the high & mighty and giving out false information towards others who need help. I've given enough lectures to these ppl in the past about this.
The Androids fragmentation; is not just the firmware, it's the entire ecosystem. From the OS vers, device hardware specs, screen specs, appstores and etc etc etc. If it's not one thing, it's gonna be another problem that makes this fragmentation a problem for the users and developers. It affects everyone, especially when a new firmware is rolled out, apps can't be installed due to certain version or any of the hardware specs that are different, and the devs have not adjusted to all the devices.
Apple doesn't have fragmentation, all the devices within the product cycle all works the same and there isnt any differences of firmware vers. The Carrier's limitations have nothing to do with Apple, since they all do business a different way and have different network infrastructures. It doesn't delay or affect the release nor does it affect the firmware's performance. That's why the ball is in Apple's court, carriers can't brand the products and can't touch the firmwares. The only "type" of fragmentation I see, is the previous hardware specs that cause differences with the firmwares feature, many are totally legit and some are not. That applies with all manufactures and device out of product cycles.
The Nexus series is the only Android device anyone should get; even though the latest device do lack some hardware and strange software specs which Google should iron out asap in 2.3.5.
When you have a 4" screen that compromises the device size, due to exterior design ... it's way too large and you might as well buy a tablet. It just doesn't fit in your pockets to well and feels to damn wide when you're using it. I honestly think the IP4 hardware design is the most incredible design ever made. I'll admit, at first I didn't like it from the photos and the story changed when I held it live. Having choice has it's benefits, but is not good for an ecosystem, you have too many diff vers of hardware, apps, appstores, payment systems for Devs and etc, which is the downside of things.
IMO firmware comes first before specs, it stinks when you have a device that can power a lot of stuff ... but it's limited due to the current firmware version. You have bugs that are not fixed, apps that can't run, missing features and more problems come up later down the road. I first felt the pain back in the Palm Treo days; throughout 2 years of the product cycle, they only updated it once and it made the device even worse then before. You must of felt this pain with the SE X10 when it had Elcaire for almost 1.5 years and recently got multitouch update. |

2-3GB of data usage for UMB plan? you're suppose to not exceed past 250-300mbs. I remember I tethered to my deskstop comp, b/c my router was in the middle of flashing a firmware and all i did was looked at a forum for 3 pages ... that alone was 200mbs.
Regarding the E71; I don't about that, in a week I do about 900 MBs with normal stuff. (No tethering & no streaming & no Youtubing)
The iPhone 3G, I've never past 300mb a month ever. The IP4, first month I did 720 mb for the same daily usage.
My buddy had the same problem and with his 3GS, once he updated to iOS4.
There's are ton of data counting apps in the appstore, we usually use our carrier's ver to track our usages.
EDIT: Forgot to add, these UMB & APN change plans are for secondary phones, your primary phone should not be using this. Since the data count must be kept very low. |

‘iPhone 4S’ Case Reveals Redesigned Camera Flash, Thinner Bezel

Folks at GadgetsDNA have spotted a new case on Chinese e-commerce website, Alibaba that claims to be for the fifth generation iPhone – “iPhone 5G”.
The case indicates redesigned camera flash, it is on the opposite side of the lens instead of being adjacent. It also comes a very thin bezel design for a larger edge-to-edge screen.
Here’s the description of the crystal case for iPhone 5G from Alibaba:
1.100% brand new high quality crystal case for iphone 5g .
2. Provides a comfortable grip, added protection against accidental drops .
3. Perfectly fits the iPhone 5g, easy to insert and remove .
4. Unique design allows easy access to all buttons, controls & ports without having to remove the case.
5. Durable and Beautiful design
You can checkout the photo of the purported iPhone 5 case below:
We’ve heard several rumors and speculations, which indicate that Apple’s fifth generation iPhone will come with a larger edge-to-edge screen._But if the purported case is indeed the real deal, then it suggests that iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S will get the same form factor as iPhone 4 and won’t feature an all-new design.
Back in March, folks at Hardmac posted photos of cases, which they claimed were for the fifth generation iPhone – iPhone 5 also suggested that iPhone 5 will come with a larger edge-to-edge screen.
As reported yesterday, Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek also claims that according to his sources, the next generation iPhone won’t feature an all-new design, but will come with minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, faster dual-core A5 processor and HSPA+ support and will be called iPhone 4S.
iPhone 5/iPhone 4S is expected to be released in September.
What will convince you to buy or upgrade to iPhone 5? Let us know in the comments. |

Hey fellow TA's, I'm hoping someone could help a brother out. I just got my first iphone, 3gs, off my sister, and I'm just trying to unlock it from Rogers to Fido. The first page of this thread seems really helpful, but www.unlockit.co.nz does not seem to be working b/c she gave me the phone w/ the latest iOS version (4.3.3), and it looks like unlockit.co.nz only works up to 4.3. What do you suggest I do? I'm lost, and I'm not familiar with all this stuff. I know the info is probably somewhere amongst the 400+ pages in this thread, but I hope you understand I don't know where to begin.
Your help is really appreciated! |

What Baseband are you using?
Check by going to settings > general > about. The Baseband version will be listed as "Modem Firmware". |

| Hey thx for the quick reply ... the 'modern firmware' says 05.16.02, so it's today. Pretty much, she just restored her phone to new, and she says it automatically updated to the latest iOS, argh. |
