Exclusive: Apple testing iPhone for T-Mobile USA

That’s right, you’re looking at photos of an iPhone prototype with T-Mobile USA 3G bands. The actual internal model is N94, and if you remember, the Verizon model is N92 while the standard GSM variant is N90. We have verified that the phone itself is running a test version of Apple’s iOS, much like the one we saw in those videos from Vietnam, and it includes internal Apple test apps like Radar and Apple’s employee directory app. Additionally, the front of the white iPhone pictured looks a little different from the photos of the retail white iPhone 4 that surfaced recently — specifically, the proximity sensor has changed on the retail version. Combined with the fact that it wouldn’t make sense to release an iPhone 4 on T-Mobile at this point in time, we’d wager that Apple is just testing the new T-Mobile-friendly radio with its current iPhone 4 hardware, possibly in preparation for integration in a future device. It’s also entirely possible the internals on this iPhone prototype are being disguised in an iPhone 4 shell, though we doubt it. Let’s see what happens with the iPhone 5 and if that makes it way to T-Mobile. If that AT&T acquisition gets approved though, the iPhone will eventually make its way to T-Mobile customers regardless.

Steve Jobs says Apple doesn’t track anyone, Android does

In what is purported to be an email exchange with Apple CEO Steve Jobs, a MacRumors reader sent in the following:
Q: Steve,
Could you please explain the necessity of the passive location-tracking tool embedded in my iPhone? It’s kind of unnerving knowing that my exact location is being recorded at all times. Maybe you could shed some light on this for me before I switch to a Droid. They don’t track me.
A: Oh yes they do. We don’t track anyone. The info circulating around is false.
Sent from my iPhone
What’s not clear is whether or not Jobs was indicating that stored location data isn’t actually being sent back to Apple, and is instead only stored locally on the device and in iOS backup files created by iTunes. What is clear according to Jobs, however, is that Android is tracking customer’s location (and more) right out of the box. There are reports that the location recording issue in iOS 4 will be fixed in a software update and was a bug as opposed to a deliberate attempt to collect data.
"Android, it has been discovered, doesn’t keep as long of a record of users’ locations but perhaps, as Jobs implies, Google does more tracking with that data. Data mining for Advertising purposes comes to mind."
(Can't wait to hear his tech details about this matter)
Apple sued over iPhone location tracking scandal

It was only a matter of time. Apple, Inc. has been named as a defendant in a federal district court suit over the iPhone and iPad 3G location tracking scandal — at this point we think it’s safe to refer to it as such. The Cupertino company’s silence over the past week has only intensified rumors and speculation that Apple is, somehow, using this harvested data in a clandestine or nefarious manner. Bloomberg notes that the lawsuit was filed in Tampa, FL by two consumers and, at this point, it is unknown if the duo will seek class action status. Details on the case are scarce at the moment, but we’re sure this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing about this one.
Apple Investigated By South Korea, France, Germany, Italy Over iPhone Tracking
Apple is being investigated by South Korea, France, Germany, and Italy over a recent report that it secretly stores a complete location history of iPhone users, according to Bloomberg.
The Korea Communications Commission asked Apple how often information is collected and saved, and whether users have a choice over whether it is saved or deleted, the commission said in an e-mailed statement today. Apple must explain why such data is saved on devices and if it’s stored on the company’s servers.
South Korea is the most recent country to join the list of those investigating Apple for the practice. In the U.S. Senator Al Franken has penned an open letter to Steve Jobs asking for answers regarding the situation. |

Jailbeak News: iOS 4.3.2 carrier unlock, hack makes iPhone run iPad apps

If jailbreaking is your thing, you’ll be delighted to learn about a simple hack that lets you run purchased iPad apps on your iPhone 4. Plus, folks waiting to free their iPhone 4 from the clutches of their carrier can sigh a collective breathe of relief as Dev-team goes live with an updated Ultrasn0w tool that supports iOS 4.3.2 carrier unlock.
Ultrasn0w 1.2.2, which does not include any new baseband support, will unlock your iPhone 4 or 3GS running the latest iOS 4.3.2 firmware, allowing you to take your device to any 3G GSM carrier. It requires a jailbroken device with 06.15.00 baseband so you’ll probably want to use a tethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2. Upon downloading and installing the Ultrasn0w 1.2.2 tool from Cydia, you need to reboot your device using the normal “slide to power off” prior to running the unlock (detailed guide).
But how about running iPad apps on your iPhone 4? Read on…
This isn’t entirely new. Unlike past solutions, a new method is for less tech-savvy users. It’s as simple as downloading the iTelePad2Pod app and running the program from the Applications folder on your Mac. Your iOS device must be jailbroken and have OpenSSH installed from Cydia because the tool basically sends the iOS app file via secure FTP protocol to your iPhone or iPod touch. The trick is in changing the app’s underlying metadata to add both devices as designated platforms. Don’t expect miracles, though. Some apps won’t work due to multitouch and design issues, like refusing to work in landscape.
Others may be tough to operate due to a greater number of iPad pixels compared to the Retina Display on your iPhone 4 or iPod touch, meaning parts of user interface elements will appear outside screen boundaries. ModMyi has more information and a handy guide plus this little video, embedded below.
(Baseband 06.15.00 <---- the baseband ver of no return, I dread this ver and it took me 7 hrs to figure how to restore it) |

It's a "bug" only because they were caught, just like a preacher "sinned" because he was found with the mistress. Remember, it's not a crime unless someone catches you. |

I'm personally pretty uptight about security, and given what I know about this cache file and how it's accessed (and used), i believe it when they say it's a bug. That being said, it's a very serious one and I'd completely expect to see it corrected in 4.4 which should be about 8 weeks away, if not sooner in a bridge update (4.3.3 or something like that). |

| GGM |
| Man if I was RIM I'd be all over this . Android and iOS getting ripped apart privacy/security wise and that's one of their biggest selling points. |
