The restoring method seems a little more complicated than it needs to be. Isn't there a simpler way to restore the phone using a saved .shsh file?

backing up your SHSH files allows you to restore you unit w/ any firmware.
Example
When 3.1.3 was no jailbreakable, having your SHSH files fools iTunes and allow you to run 3.1.2 when Apple has killed it and forcing you to move onto a FW you can't jailbreak.
It's for your sanity the guys @ Cydia made this.
I wonder whats the new layer of security Apple is gonna have for the next ver of the iPhone.

Condoms.
Because they're always trying to shove something where it doesn't belong... LOL.
Also: They're probably going to stop allowing surfing the web completly... better security that way.

Yep :)
But I'm asking HOW this is to be done. Let's say 3.1.4 gets released tomorrow and my iPhone somehow gets updated. How would I use my saved SHSH file to allow the phone to become re-JBable (assuming Spirit would not work on 3.1.4)?

It does seem a little complicated but all you're doing is pointing your hosts file to your own comp (Instead of a Cydia server) and then running a little server program, it's not that complicated once you've done it one or two times (It was really easy on a mac, I haven't tried it on the PC yet, but it does involve some work in the terminal app). At least this way you can always restore and don't have to worry about a server being down or not saving your blobs for you.

i have a new white iphone 3GS 32GB that my friend messed up the firmware, so we just bought another one and we're selling this one...I know its lame to advertise, but if someone knows how to restore the firmware on the newer models and wants a good deal on a brand new IPhone in the box with all the original stuff, send me a PM.
Its just sitting here otherwise. If you have AT&T it'll work just fine.
Once someone figures out how to jailbreak it with the newer firmware running, it'll be fine.

1) DFU Mode
2) Restore as a new user
3) Jailbreak w/ this http://spiritjb.com/
4) Keep it; it's useless to us, only can be used w/ the AT&T network & the new iPhone is coming next month.

Another next gen iPhone in the wild, also torn apart
This time, it is from the country of Vietnam and they have gone all out. Not only is the unit a little bit different physically from the one Gizmodo had (there are no screws at the botton of the device), but the gentleman who has the phone has torn it apart and revealed the custom Apple A4 processor. There is no working OS loaded (besides a test one called Bonfire) and the unit appears to be a 16GB mode, though it is pre-production obviously. Word on the street is that this unit was purchased for $4,000. Couple additional shots in the gallery and video after the break!
I just hope Rogers releases the same day as the Americans.

iPad 3G (LIVE)
Last one from NYC, it was pulled out of "staff inventory" by the store manager.
After giving this a test run, it's a diff story and feels really nice. We'll see how this iPad kicks in full gear when 4.0 comes around w/ multitasking.
