iOS 5.0.2 and 5.1 on the way

Apple is reportedly hard at work on a new update to its iOS operating system that will address the remaining issues users are having with battery life. German-language technology blog Macerkopf.de cites a an Apple software engineer in claiming that the new update, iOS 5.0.2, will be released to public before the end of next week. A more significant update, iOS 5.1, is also in the works according to the report. Apple’s first major update to iOS will supposedly feature several enhancements to Siri that will give the virtual_assistant access to new functions such as capturing a photograph or video or even enabling and disabling Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The report does not detail when iOS 5.1 might be released to the public.

How professional is that update description? Don't bother with this app, it kills the res of your pics.

Apple always cries about being copied, first it was windows, now it's android, jesus, if apple's products are so amazing why are they so fiercly scared of competition? Should the first car company sue it's competition?

Has anyone noticed how many upgrades/years it took for iphone to have a flash on their camera for the iphone. Or that the first ipad didn't come with a camera .... is someone here going to tell me that they couldn't include it? Well answer is simple, if they included all features in one shot, that means they'll have less sales next year, because they'll have a product that's still amazingly good, but instead they'll give you a piece of the pie so that next year you go out sell your old ipad/iphone and get a new one :D Is that really good for the people or for the company $$$ ??? hmm... . Now the only reason they're crying about being copied is because it would force them to compete and add more features, therefore losing yearly repeat sales.

I was an iPhone user for over three years, got tired of their upgrade every year nonesense

Indeed sale would the next gen would have been effected, but you still got to remember some hardwares and iOS vers may not be able to handle some features in the long run.

1)1st gen iPhone to the 3G was the same specs; 3G, GPS and the Appstore was added. That's why support for that device ended it;s life in the middle of iOS4, it's was techinically a 4 year old device.

http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php...7&idPhone2=2424

2)LED flash would only run smooth on the IP4 and above; the 3GS was fast at it's time, but loading time would have effected it if a LED flash was used in that gen while taking pics. If you take a look at some of Android's high end phones, such as the Galaxy S (which is the same time frame as the IP4, it doesnt have a LED flash - maybe they couldn't fit in with the mother board design, who knows)

3)Having a camera on 10" tablet is gonna whacked tbh, holding that thing up and snapping a pic is not fun and they only added a cheese camera to address some users. The size of Playbook is much easier to take pics with for sure.

4)It's better to have one device updated once a year; if you look at Samsung or HTC, they got too many devices launched each year and which in fact fragments their ecosystem, since each of them are so diff. But I really only support the Nexus series, it's the only Android phone anyone should get.

I'm not here to defend Apple 100%, some functions stripped for the older gen to push more sale for the newest gen is really lame and unfair. But I do see both side of the story, sometimes things will work well and other times it doesn't work well in the long run. Having pretty much all the iPhones in my collection, I can valid why some features shouldn't be added to that device, due to poor UI performances. Such as the most recent debate, Siri on the IP4 would make that phone crawl after a few weeks of use and you would need to restore it quite often to get a very thing running buttery smooth again.

Last night I realized something about my iPhone's lockscreen so obvious, but couldn't quite put my finger on, ever since updating to iOS 5. Ever since updating to iOS5, the option to not show SMS 'Previews' has been removed. What a HUGE FAIL on apple's part w/ that change. Very disappointed about the removal of that option. I personally don't like ppl being able to see/read my txt/sms msgs on my Lockscreen. I really am baffled as to why Apple would chose to remove the option of disabling TXT/SMS Previews in Lockscreen mode w/ iOS5?! Makes no sense.

Isn't that option in the Notifications > Messages settings under "View in Lock Screen"?

My iPhone 4S upgrade review, let the truth be told.

When the iPhone 4S launched last month, the first thing I hunted down was a comparison video to see how much faster is this new iPhone matching up to the iPhone 4. A side-by-side video hit the web and after viewing it; I felt it wasn't a valid reason for me to upgrade, but soon later found out I was totally wrong about it ... again.

The question that was lingers on my mind for a while was, "should I bother" and "do I really need the new iPhone 4S?" I hope this write up will help you clear the fog and put your mind at ease with some seriously tough decisions you have to make.

The new hardware and features...

The A5 dual core CPU underclocked @ 800 mhz is very sweet silican and it really does push iOS 5 so much faster then the A4. Browsing the web on Safari is indeed impressively fast, some would say it feels like LTE speeds with barely any load times. Loading games and high intensive graphics are also blazing fast, seven times faster then the iPhone 4 and even the non iPhone users from other side of the pond would agree with this. Editing movies on iMovies are now 100% smooth without any processing lag and delays, which always seems to be difficult sometimes on the iPhone 4, especially after updating to iOS 5. During any type of intensive loading and processing, the iPhone 4 would rather be non responsive when I tried to multitask in & out and this took a toll on the CPU and battery sometimes. (I also restored my iPhone 4S from iCloud with the iPhone 4 broadcasting a mobile hotspot; after an hour of use the phone was pretty sluggish and the home button didn't work too well. I had to cool it down and restore when I got home.) While the iPhone 4S completed this task very smoothly, as if I was switching in and out of small apps that requires barely any type of resources.

The new 8 MP camera with the new sensor, the extra lens and larger aperture is indeed fabulous. I've taken some test pictures and they all produce almost like a 12 MP Canon IS1200 point and shoot. I've also displayed those pictures on 42" 1080p HD LCD TV and printed out 8 x 10 photos to confirm, there were zero pixilation. The colours are very bright and vibrate. Capturing videos on 1080p HD with stabilization is a treat for people who love to record videos and I hope in the next model, they will have HDR video recording added to their list of camera functions. If you're a photo and video junkie like me, you will be snapping even more pictures & videos to upload to FaceBook and Youtube. Don't forget about iMessage too; this has replaced email pics to people, only if you want to send them a causal picture they can discard after viewing.

The new CDMA + UMTS +HSPA antenna is incredible in many ways; antennagate is now solved (chuckles). It switches intelligently between two antennas for the best signal and call quality within that area and there are times you'll witness this, just by holding the phone when the screen is on. One of the best part about the new antenna design, in areas the iPhone 4 would be having the antennagate symptoms, such as struggling with data speeds in spotty coverage areas, the UMTS antenna on the right would be heated up quite hot sometimes and you'll noticed your battery life draining faster then ever. In these situations, I would be forced to use 2G to perverse my battery life and signal strength. Now that's been 100% solved, I was in the basement of my work place today and I noticed the iPhone 4S would be performing normal, as if it above ground and non of these symptoms were occurring anymore. The UMTS antenna did get slighly warm in this dungeon area, but it was never hot as the iPhone 4. Now I fully understand why Apple got rid of the 2G toggle in the system settings and there's no need to toggle into it yourself.

When I first saw Siri in action, it was quite amazed on how smooth the AI performs and remember this is still in BETA mode. I thought to myself, I won't be using this much since Voice Command software has not been very accurate in the past, regardless of the manufactures and of course it all depends on your surrounding noise environments. So far I've tested Siri during my drive home this week, I was able to use Siri while driving and still have my attention 100% focused on the road. I've setup my phone to be charging; slipped into a leather sleeve upside down (so the speaker and mic is pointed towards me) and rested in my cup holder. While I was shooting out commands and messaging ppl, just as if I sitting down on my couch typing them out. Communication flowed very well and this was indeed a lot safer then talking on a bluetooth headset, Siri spoke at speed that was clear and non-distractive. Now I enjoy being stuck in traffic, I can message everyone and catch up with what's going. It made my drive to work and home so much more enjoyable and I can still battle the DT Core traffic in rush aggressively like the other rats on the road. I've also tested Siri in a very noise place and it still perform quite accurate; while placing a command with Siri, both the noise cancelling / speaker phone mic at the top and the bottom mic was activated to pick up your commands. You don't have to scream to get Siri to understand what you want to do.

I've also took Nunace on a test run, while shopping at Metro. In this situation, I wouldn't be using Siri, I would rather want my privacy and also have my text messaging conversations to be flowing at a faster pace. Normally, I would put down my groceries, use two hands to text and pick up the basket again to move on. Now that was not needed anymore, I was able to hold my basket on one hand and hold my iPhone 4S on the other. Because of the 3.5 screen size, I was able to navigate easily throughout iOS5 and using Nunace for speak to text, this was 100% on point and accurate. This would also make many other things in your life a lot easier, when you only have one hand. Please don't be masturbating while talking to Siri, that's not cool at all.

Upgrading

Reason for upgrading from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4S, are mostly determined by what type of user you are. Please keep in mind, we don't have the luxury to HUP every year like some other regions.

Gurus, Pros, Intermediates and whatever you like to call these users:

Since the iPhone 3G, there's never been just a small update with the iPhone each year and the "looks are very deceiving" when it's not a redesign. I've also thought the 3GS was just a minor update, but in reality it was double the amount of horse power under the same hood and even from this day it can handle two generations of iOS updates in a very efficient speed and manner. If you're at this level of a power user; for you to upgrade each year will be worth while, since you will be using the phone at the full potentials for every feature. Find a way to get the iPhone 4S; because the A5, the new camera, new antenna design and Siri & Nunace are at whole new level from the iPhone 4. Even with day to day operations, you will be seeing a speed increase with no choppy or chunky animation within iOS 5. It's really worth to dish out that extra cash, even if it's an extra $400 for your own unofficial HUP. The upgrade for me has been extremely good and I wouldn't have known what I've been missing out; if I didn't decide to search for deal online, which I was super lucky and ultra grateful for.

The causal users:

If you don't mind the little processing delays on the A4, for browsing and gaming and also minor delays on the day to day operations.
If you don't really care about the ultra high quality pictures & videos, since the iPhone 4 camera still does an amazing job with pictures and video capturing.
If you don't mind slapping on a case for low receptions areas.
If you don't care about Siri and Nunace features.

Skipping this upgrade is very valid reason and you'll be happy with the money you've saved. You won't be needing this upgrade at all and the redesign is coming next year. You will be able to subsidize your new iPhone 5 with your our wonderful carriers. The iPhone 4 still one of the best iPhones Apple has ever made and will indeed have huge road map that Apple will fully support up to iOS 7. Due to internal specs it has under the hood, you don't need to worry about feeling left behind and Apple will only stop their support for device that's been around for fours years. Of course, you won't be getting all the new features as the iPhone 4S, since it may be hardware issue or Apple's marketing to keep it on the iPhone 4S.

Wouldn't it be nice to live in a country where we can HUP each year, enjoy the most current iPhones and be able to ask our carriers to unlock our phones while travelling on vacation for free? Well that's not going to happen in Canada and I fear our telcos are going to become more strict in the future, but this is a whole different story I'll write about later.

For the mean time, enjoy your iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS everyone.

Qualcomm’s 4G LTE Gobi 4000 chips shipping to OEMs, likely to land in next-gen iPad

Qualcomm has just issued a press release announcing the commercial availability of their Gobi 4000 chips for 4G LTE and HSPA+ capable devices, a variant of which could very well ship in a next-generation LTE-capable iPad. In August we discovered Apple had possibly begun field testing a next-gen LTE iPads with LTE code floating around the iOS builds, and it’s likely Apple would go with Qualcomm’s chip, as almost every 3G iOS device since the Verizon iPhone has used their Gobi platform, the exception being the the AT&T iPad which uses an older Infineon chip.

“The Gobi 4000 platform allows customers to offer both LTE/HSPA+ and LTE/EV-DO designs to meet the growing demand for embedded 3G/4G connectivity in mobile devices worldwide… System designers now have the flexibility to choose an embedded Gobi 4000 platform for high-speed 4G LTE support, or an embedded Gobi 3000 platform for worldwide 3G connectivity.”

The new chips, now shipping to OEMs with modules available through Novatel Wireless and Sierra Wireless, are based on Qualcomm’s MDM9600 and MDM 9200 3G/4G wireless modems, and as the company notes, have been specially designed for deployment in devices utilizing Snapdragon dual-core and quad-core processors. In addition to HSPA+, dual-carrier HSPA+, and LTE support, the Gobi 4000 platform is also backwards compatible with HSPA and EV-DO. On top of a possible variant of the chip coming to a future 4G LTE iPad, the Gobi 4000 platform will also be included in Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops, and Dell’s Latitude E6420 laptops, in addition to other Windows and Android powered mobile devices.

Qualcomm’s senior vice president of produdct management for CDMA Technologies, Cristiano Amon, had this to say about the announcement:

“Embedded modules based on our new Gobi 4000 technology are designed to give consumers an uncompromised mobile connectivity experience, both in terms of download speeds and flexibility,” said Cristiano Amon, senior vice president of product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “To make Gobi 4000 available to as many consumers as possible, Qualcomm has worked hard to ensure that OEMs can use the platform on many commonly used personal computing, tablet and e-reader operating systems, including Windows® and Android, and hardware architectures, such as our powerful Snapdragon™ dual-core and quad-core processors.”

You can try this if you want to get a new one, I have successfully done this TWICE once with my 3GS and once with my 4.

I opened up the phone, took apart the headphone jack and charger port and covered the red with some white tape. I then made 2 water sensors printed them out scrapped the old ones off and super glued my 2 "virgin" ones that I had made in place of the 2 bad ones.

The first time with my 3GS I rushed it and they noticed that the 2 circle ones looked kinda funky. They asked me about it, I said that it has never been opened since I bought it new from Apple. They responded "well you are under warranty so we will just replace it." Mind you, this phone didn't even turn on.

The 4 was completely messed up as well. I replaced the screen with a cheap eBay one because the OEM was cracked. Did the same this with all the other water sensors and I took my time on the ones underneath the battery cover. Took it in, they took it back opened it up. Came back with a new one with out even asking me anything.

Worth a shot, and if they give you with tampering just hold your ground and they will give you one to keep you happy. Unless the Canadian Apple stores aren't as nice as the American ones? lol

Fat battery pack accessories may soon be a thing of the past. Scientists at Northwestern University are tweaking lithium-ion batteries to last 10 times longer and charge 10 times faster than the battery technology used today, BBC_reported recently. Better yet, the new tech could be on the market in just 5 years. Oddly enough, it appears that poking “millions of_minuscule_holes” that are just 20-40 nanometers wide, and changing the movement and density of lithium ion cells, helps to add battery life and speed up the charging process. A prototype phone battery in Northwestern’s labs can be fully charged in just 15 minutes and it lasts an entire week on a single charge,_BBC said. Dr. Harold Kung, the lead scientist on the project, explained that the speed and density of lithium ions can be changed using different materials during the battery’s manufacturing process. “Even after 150 charges, which would be one year or more of operation, the battery is still five times more effective than lithium-ion batteries on the market today,” Dr. Kung said. Unfortunately, battery life begins to decline quickly after about 150 charges with the technology in its current state._

Bye bye Berry: iPhone now top dog in workplace, study finds

For the first time ever, an iPhone is now more likely to show up in a conference room than a BlackBerry, a new Mobile Workforce Report from research firm iPass suggests. According to the report, 95% of mobile workers now own a smartphone, up 10 percentage points from 2010, and 45% of the enterprise workforce carries an iPhone, up from 31.1% last year. “BlackBerry has not really fallen from the top spot in so much as other smartphones have grown faster,” the report said. “BlackBerry market share has only declined slightly from 35% in 2010 to 32% today.” Read on for more.

Android’s market share doubled year over year to surpass Symbian with a 21% share of the enterprise smartphone market. 18% of mobile workers said they intend to purchase an iPhone in 2012, 11.2% are planning to buy an Android device and 3.6% want a Windows Phone. Only 2.3% of workers have plans to buy a BlackBerry next year.

The iPass study also found a number of other compelling tidbits: 40% of mobile workers would feel disoriented if they didn’t have a smartphone for a week, 34% would feel distraught and 10% would feel lonely. The iPass study was based on a survey of more than 2,300 workers around the world.

Apple slows iPad 2 production in preparation for iPad 3, report claims

Apple’s panel suppliers have reportedly been told to decrease display shipments for the iPad 2 as orders from the Cupertino, California-based company slow in the fourth quarter. Samsung, LG Display and Chimei Innolux have all seen panel orders from Apple decline in the fourth quarter according to a report from DigiTimes, which could leave a huge surplus of parts in the supply chain. The report states that Apple is controlling iPad 2 panel orders to make way for its next-generation iPad model, for which displays began shipping in October.
