I also hear that when you go up to 5, you can't revert to 4.x...

Ok just to clarify things.
I used itunes 10.3 to install ios5.
I did a restore and used ios5, which installed without a hitch.
When I connected it back to itunes, it gave an error and asked itunes 10.5...
So i got itunes 10.5 beta, it recognized the iphone, but told me can't activate bla bla dev blabla...
So whatever, I got to see IOS5, but not making calls is useless as I need my phone during the day.
So, I did a restore, and it returned to 4.3.3.

I don't know, in the past I could downgrade from a GM build to an older ver, even when the baseband upgraded.
Tons of hidden tweeks and features within iOS 5 that makes things a lot easier and very cool to use.

... my 3GS is ed I think. A little bit of pop got in the top and now the vibrate doesn't turn off. It's been like that for about 4 hours. I can't use the screen, but visually it all looks good and will receive calls, but it won't allow me to tap the screen to answer. It will even connect to bluetooth, but the battery died before I could test that.
I wonder if Apple would help me out?

Just turn it off, open it up, wipe off the pop, dry it, and you should be good to go.

So far no good. I opened it and cleaned many contacts with alchohol. It was working partyly this morning with bluetooth headset only. Now when I plug it in due to dead battery, it doesn't seem to want to charge and turn on.
Back to sad feeling. I wonder if Apple could cut me a deal with another 3Gs?

Remember this is only Beta 1, many things are still to be added and etc.

Doubt Apple would do much since it's so old but it never hurts to try. Their retail store staff are some of the friendliest/helpful you'll find. I got 3 new handsets within my 1 year warranty period and they couldn't have cared less. Your best bet is probly just a used one I've seen them pretty cheap.
I'm kind of in the same boat, my 3GS is hanging on by a thread cause I never use a case and it's cracked to hell. I'm holding out till the next release though cause if they don't bring back the curved backing I'll go android. Really not a fan of the 4's rigid sides and glass back...

i think i'm at my 5th 3gs, no questions asked. That 80$ for apple care is money well spent.
