Why iOS 5 Apps Sometimes Say They Are Cleaning Themselves [Video]
With iOS 5, iPhone and iPad users started noticing a new curious behavior: app icons that suddenly started Cleaning themselves. Facebook does it. Instapaper does it. Even Twitter does it. But what the heck does it mean?
Id long wondered about that myself, but as it turns out, it has to do with iOS 5 deleting cache and temporary files to make the backup as small as possible perfect for shooting up to the iCloud or to your Mac through iTunes WiFI sync.
TiPB has the details, which I really enjoyed:
Since adding iCloud and Wi-Fi sync options, its become important to keep app data as clean as possible, so backups are as efficient as possible, so were not left waiting around for minutes or hours getting as frustrated as possible.
And yes, this is the same reason that, under the original iOS 5.0, apps like Instapaper would sometimes lose all your locally cached articles. (Since fixed with the addition of a third storage option between documents and cache, one thats not cleaned but also not backed up.)
There you have it! Its nothing to worry about, its all part of iOS 5 purging itself of toxins from time to time.
(Never seen this "cleaning" function before, but I tend to reboot and flush the memory once every 4 hours. A habit I have since the Treo days)

RIM responds to claim of BlackBerry 10 software problems [Video]
RIM has responded to an exclusive BGR report published on Thursday in which our source claimed BlackBerry 10 was delayed not because the vendor was waiting for a new LTE chip, but because RIMfs developers have not yet been able to resolve many of the issues plaguing the new OS. gRIM made a strategic decision to launch BlackBerry 10 devices with a new, LTE-based dual core chip set architecture,h RIM told AllThingsD. gAs explained on our earnings call, the broad engineering impact of this decision and certain other factors significantly influenced the anticipated timing for the BlackBerry 10 devices. The anonymous claim suggesting otherwise is inaccurate and uninformed. As RIM has previously explained, and as Mike Lazaridis reiterated on the earnings call, we will not launch BlackBerry 10 devices until we know they are ready and we believe this new chip set architecture is required to deliver the world class user experience that our customers will expect. Any suggestion to the contrary is simply false.h Contrary to RIMfs statement, our source indicated that the company has not yet been able to get core features like email and BlackBerry Messenger working as desired on BlackBerry 10 smartphones, and that it is gpushing this out as long as they can for one reason, they donft have a working product yet.h

How To Make Your iPhones Home Button More Responsive [iOS Tips]
One of the unfortunate byproducts of owning an iOS device is that your Home button can become a little sluggish over time. When you get your new iPhone or iPad and use it initially, the Home button works smoothly, but it can eventually become less responsive.
Fortunately, theres a subtle trick in iOS for recalibrating your Home button. After performing this tip on your personal iOS device, you should notice that your Home button is considerably more responsive when youre navigating throughout iOS.
iDownloadBlog passes on an incredibly helpful tip that many probably dont know about. Its actually a very simple process to recalibrate your Home button; simply open a stock iOS app (Weather, Stocks, Clock, etc.). Once the app is open, press your iPhones power button until the slide to power off screen appears. From that screen, press and hold your Home button until iOS force quits the stock app you have open. Youre done! No rocket science required.
Your iPhones Home button (this also works wonderfully on the iPad and iPod touch) should now be just as responsive as ever.
(I normally reboot it on the IP4 *after some massive processing*, IP4S is haven't seen it yet)

Samsung: Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab will not receive Ice Cream Sandwich
We hate to be the bearer of bad news during the holidays, but Samsung has announced that it will not update the Galaxy Tab or its Galaxy S smartphones to the newest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. This of course is a bit troubling considering the huge popularity of the Galaxy S: Samsung has sold nearly 20 million units since it first launched the device in 2010. As The Verge notes, the Galaxy S offers similar hardware to the Nexus S, which is receiving the Android 4.0 update, but Samsung says its gexperience enhancingh TouchWiz operating system, in addition to other carrier-added software, will put too much of a strain on the phonefs hardware. Samsung also confirmed that its 7-inch Galaxy Tab will not receive the update, which isnft too surprising since most versions never received the Honeycomb update, either. Samsung stated earlier this week that it will issue an Android 4.0 update for its Galaxy S II and Galaxy S Note products next year.
Report claims Asian suppliers scramble to meet special iPad 3 launch date: Jobsf Feb. 24 birthday anniversary
Apply a healthy dose of skepticism to this report rather than take it at face value. According to Focus Taiwan, that also cited a local report in the Chinese Economic Times newspaper, Apple is shooting to launch iPad 3 on Steve Jobsf birthday anniversary Feb. 24.
The newspaper based their report on sources close to Taiwanese makers in Applefs supply chain:
After the iPhone 4S successfully took the tech market by storm, the iPad3 is widely expected to be Applefs first hit product to be released next year. Industry sources said the first shipment of the iPad3 could exceed 4 million units. Because it is a new gadget, it is taking time for makers in the supply chain to raise their yield rates. The sources said all OEM and ODM makers have exercised great caution in ensuring the smooth operations of their production lines.
The original iPad was introduced Jan. 27, 2010 by Applefs then-CEO Steve Jobs. In order to meet the deadline, the report noted, Asian component makers and contract manufacturers are demanding that employees work during the Lunar New Year holiday.
Specificallyc
Foxconn, Applefs favorite contract manufacturer, is reportedly asking employees at its iPad division to only take five days off during the Lunar New Year holiday. Catcher Technology, a rumored maker of iPad 3s case, reportedly said gat least some of its employees will have to work overtime during the Lunar New Year holiday.h Battery maker Simplo Technology, connector maker Amer International Group and optical lens supplier Genius Electronic Optical are all believed to have asked employees involved in the project to shorten their holiday.

Every 60 seconds: Apple sells 925 iPhones, 2 million people watch online porn, more
Apple sold 925 iPhone 4S handsets each minute during the devices debut weekend, and it sells 81 iPads every 60 seconds on average. Research In Motion sells 103 BlackBerry phones, Amazon sells 18 Kindle Fire tablets and Microsoft sells 11 Xbox 360 consoles every minute. More than 700 computers are purchased around the world every 60 seconds, and 232 of them are infected by malware. That malware stat seems surprisingly low, however, when you consider that 2 million people watch online porn every minute. Read on for more.
Website design firm GO-Globe recently spread a variety of technology-related stats out across an infographic and the result helps us put a lot of things in perspective. Beyond the scary amount of Internet porn watched around the world, we can see just how entrenched various consumer electronics and digital goods and services have become in modern life.
Eleven million conversations take place using various instant messaging platforms every 60 seconds, 2,100 people check in using foursquare and 1,100 acres of virtual land are farmed in FarmVille. Thirty-eight tons of e-waste is generated around the world every minute, though were not sure if that stat includes all of the virtual land in FarmVille.
Every minute, $219,000 worth of payments are made using PayPal, $10,000 of which is sent from mobile devices. EBay is used to purchase over 950 items each minute and more than 180 of those purchases are made using mobile phones or tablets.
Surprisingly, perhaps, physical media maintains a huge presence in our lives despite the advent of the digital age. Four hundred and fifty Windows 7 discs are sold, 1,400 Redbox DVDs are rented and a staggering 2.6 million CDs containing 1,820 terabytes of data are created each minute. Four thousand USB devices are sold every 60 seconds as well, along with 2,500 ink cartridges.
Its amazing how much happened every 60 seconds in 2011 and as the year draws to a close, we cant wait to see what each minute will hold in 2012.
Figured out how to use punctuations, I don't have to sound and look so robotic anymore.

Apples Santa Siri Commercial Named Most Effective Ad Of Holiday Season [Report]
Santa has come and gone on his sleigh, and Apple has profited along the way. A survey from Ace Metrix, a TV ad analysis firm, has revealed that Apples Santa Siri commercial beat out 34 other Santa-themed spots to win the crown of most effective ad for the 2011 holiday season.
Apples commercial, featuring Santa and the iPhone 4Ss Siri assistant, scored a 652 out of a possible 950 points in Ace Metrixs survey, topping competitors like Pillsbury, Coca-Cola, and Nintendo.
GigaOM reports that Ace Metrixs survey took relevance, persuasion, watchability, information and other metrics into consideration. The results are reportedly representative of the U.S. TV viewing audience. Ace Metrix summaries Apples success to the simple fact that Santa sells.
If predications are to be believed, Apple will sell an incredible amount of iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads this holiday season, breaking previous records. Santa may need to consider moving his base of operations to Cupertino, California.
Looking back at 2011: The year of the tablet falls flat
Apple rocked the consumer electronics industry when it launched the magical and revolutionary iPad in April 2010. It wasnt the first media tablet aimed at the consumer market by any means, but it was the first that consumers actually wanted. Following the iPads unveiling, Apples rivals scrambled to build tablets of their own and market research firms were quick to herald 2011 as the year of the tablet. More than 100 different tablets were unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2011, the bulk employing Android to power their user experiences, and the year of the tablet was upon us. Read on for more.
Among all of the slates on display at CES 2011, Motorolas XOOM was undoubtedly the star of the show. It would launch as the first Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet and enthusiasts were excited to get their hands on the first Android slate with a true tablet OS. Motorola and Verizons marketing efforts would pay off to an extent, and demand for the device was solid Motorola shipped 250,000 XOOM tablets during the slates first quarter of availability, 440,000 units during its second quarter and another 400,000 tablets last quarter. Unfortunately, the XOOM ended up being the exception to the rule.
Barring a handful of successful slates the most notable of which are likely the Barnes & Noble Nook Color, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 the bulk of Android tablets came and went without any amount of consumer interest worth measuring. Android wasnt the only game in town, however, and anticipated offerings carrying two other platforms that had been generating a bit of a buzz would be introduced as well.
One came from Research In Motion, and it was the the first device to launch with the vendors next-generation operating system based on QNX. The BlackBerry PlayBook was released in select markets on April 19th, and the world watched as RIMs debut slate hit store shelves. Unfortunately, watching is the only thing most consumers did. While a number of early adopters enjoyed RIMs tablet, sales didnt come anywhere close to meeting expectations and RIM would eventually be forced to take a $485 million charge related to unsold PlayBook inventory. The company shipped 500,000 PlayBook tablets during the devices first quarter of availability, 200,000 during its second and just 150,000 units last quarter.
Sadly, the PlayBook isnt even the worst tablet story 2011 would have to offer.
Only July 1st, Hewlett-Packard launched the HP TouchPad. Six weeks later, HP said it was discontinuing the production of all webOS hardware including the TouchPad tablet. The company would go on to announce that webOS, which it gained ownership of as part of its $1.2 billion Palm acquisition, would be open-sourced.
Now, as 2011 draws to a close, 2012 is again being called the year of the tablet. A stunning lack of differentiation from rival offerings left Apples iPad 2 as the only indisputable tablet success story in 2011, but many analysts and industry watchers seem to think the tide will turn the coming year.
Two promising slates hit the market in late 2011 the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet and sales expectations are high. Google also unveiled its next-generation Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system recently, and the first wave of ICS tablets is expected to be revealed in a few short weeks at CES 2012. It remains to be seen if Googles updated platform will offer an experience compelling enough to draw real consumer interest, however.
Of course Windows 8 is due in 2012 as well, and expectations are high for an OS that could potentially bring a more usable and elegant interface to tablets with desktop-like utility. Current Windows tablets are bulky and awkward, but Microsofts Metro UI could be part of a package that finally helps Microsoft gain ground in the tablet space.
Tablets have plenty to offer, taking the portability and convergence that made smartphones popular and presenting it to the consumer in a larger package. Differentiation, a solid catalog of third-party apps and a compelling user experience are among the key elements competitors will need in order to gain ground as the battle against Apples iPad continues, however, and whether or not vendors are up for the challenge in 2012 remains to be seen.

iPad 3 'Home Button' Parts Start Circulating in China
What youre looking at is a comparison of an iPad 2 home button and an iPad 3 home button. At the surface, not much as changed, but the prospects of some minor structural tweaks do hint at something greater. The iPad 3 home button which has been handled in both black and white flavors looks almost identical to the iPad 2 home button, but the gray glyph representing the frame of a home screen app icon is slightly thicker. This, obviously, is not all the interesting but we do learn a few things.
- The iPad 3 will likely come in both black and white just like the iPad 2 if these iPad 3 home buttons pan out to be the ones used in the final product
- The buttons floating around right now in large quantities signal that the iPad 3 is either in production or close to the production stage
- The iPad 3 will not lose the home button (iOS devices have been rumored to soon be losing the home button)
Perhaps the most interesting part about the iPad 3 home button is that its internal structuring is smaller than the iPad 2′s connector (easy to tell in the comparison shot above). Apple tweaking the home button structural design and making its size smaller may indicate that Apple is trying to make room for something else. The iPad 3 is already rumored to be nearly 1mm thicker to accommodate a more pixel-dense Retina Display. Perhaps this slightly smaller home button is one method Apple is using to keep the extra thickness required to a minimum.
Power and volume rockers with a similar design to their iPad 2 counterparts are also floating around, perhaps hinting an minimal design changes. Stay tuned for more.
Free, legal Siri port for all jailbroken iOS 5 devices now available
Following our multiple looks at private Siri ports to unsupported iOS 5 devices with the help of developer Steven Troughton-Smith, Chpwn and Ryan Petrich have, today, gone public with a Siri port called Spire.
The port mirrors all of the iPhone 4S functionality and works on the jailbroken iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, third generation iPod touch, fourth generation iPod touch, and first generation iPad. We previously revealed that iPod touch Siri performance is not on par with iPhone Siri performance due to the lower quality microphone system.
Spire is available for free on the Cydia jailbroken application market, and the download comes in at approximately 100MB according to a blog post from Chpwn. Because of the large file size, the developers recommend that users connect to a WiFi network, not a standard cellular network, for downloading.
A few Siri ports have gone public via jailbreak applications markets in the past few weeks but have been deemed unsafe and illegal by the development community because of its distribution of Apple copyrighted materials. Spire uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesnt have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts, Chpwn says.
Of course, with any port of this kind, there will be a caveat: you have to still gain authorization via your own server and an iPhone 4S. Chpwn explains:
However, Spire is not a complete solution. Apple still requires authorization to use Siri, so information from an iPhone 4S is still required. To insert this information, Spire allows you to enter your own proxy server address. By using this (ancient) SiriProxy fork, you can setup a proxy using your own iPhone 4S to insert the needed information reasonably easily. Other solutions for proxying Siri will be listed here as they are developed perhaps that sort of proxy might be included in the main SiriProxy repository.

Having a weird issue with my contacts lately. When updating or adding contacts on my iPhone, I am not seeing the additions on my Mac or iPad. Never seemed to have this problem before with MobileMe, but it is quite apparent now.
Any suggestions? I have tried turning off Contact sync on iCloud for all devices, turning back on. Even tried deleting my iCloud account on my iPhone, and re-adding it. Still no luck.

Untethered jailbreak now available for pre-A5 iPhones, iPads and Touches
It's just a few weeks since pod2g revealed his untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 and -- boom -- all of a sudden it's up for the DL. The exploit has been incorporated into redsn0w 0.9.10, the Pwnage Tool and Chronic Devteam's Cydia package, and it works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (including the CDMA version), iPad 1, iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G, so long as they've been updated to iOS 5.0.1. Meanwhile, pod2g is reportedly now looking for a way to snap the shackles on A5-based devices too, but hopefully only after he's taken some rest -- a burned-out jailbreaker is no good to anybody. Full instructions are at the source link.
Apple fined $1.2M for misleading consumers with AppleCare warranties
Apple is being fined 900,000-euro-or approximately $1.2 million USD-by Italian antitrust authorities after the company was found responsible for bad commercial practices that harmed consumers. According to a report by AFP, Autorit Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato is imposing the fines related to an investigation regarding AppleCare and the Italian Consumer Code:
Apple had given unclear information on payments for additional assistance offered to consumers and the company had not fully implemented the two-year guarantee by the producer
The Italian Consumer Code -and European Union law- provides consumers with a minimum, mandatory two-year warranty on all electronics. The antitrust authority essentially claims Apple is deceiving its customers by selling AppleCare warranties and providing its one-year manufacturer warranty without explicit indication of consumers rights to the complimentary two-year warranty. Apple does not currently offer the free, mandatory two-year warranty in Italy or elsewhere.
Targeted in the fines are Apple Inc., Apple Sales International, and Apple Retail Italy. Apple was asked to cease practice and notify the Authority of a new warranty policy for Italy, as well as publish a document on Apple.com to inform consumers of the resolution.
The European Antitrust Commission is also probing Apple over its e-book business. Earlier this month, they claimed Apple has engaged in illegal agreements or practices that would have the object or the effect of restricting competition in the EU or in the EEA. That EAC investigation is ongoing.
China Getting iPhone 4S By Jan. 23 [Report]
Apple will introduce the iPhone 4S in China before the the populous nation celebrates the Year of the Dragon on January 23. Thats the word from the countrys Peoples Daily. According to the publication, the government Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Dec. 22 gave the tech giant the go-ahead to debut its latest device.
The news site said Apples smartphone will be introduced at the beginning of January 2012 in time for the Chinese New Year. Although the specific model was not mentioned in the governments approval, the filing indicates model number A1431, the same identifier used when Apple obtained an earlier network entry permit for the iPhone 4S.
In contrast to the fast rollout elsewhere, the iPhone 4S introduction has involved a lengthy process. However, early signs are that Chinas consumers are equally anxious to get their hands on the smartphone. In Hong Kong, it took only minutes for the iPhone 4S to sell out when introduced in November. For weeks now, China Unicom has taken iPhone 4S pre-orders.
The voice-recognition system Siri, which gained immediate fans in the U.S. and other English-speaking regions, will also be hotly-desired in China. Apple is expected to introduce support for Chinas most popular language, Mandarin, by March of 2012, reports suggest.
Still to be resolved is whether Apple can land the big fish China Mobile expanding its customer base by many millions.
Android and iOS activations jump 353% on Christmas Day to set new record
Christmas day has historically been a record shattering day in terms of new device activations and app downloads. This Christmas was no different according to these recent stats published by Flurry Analytics. Using a baseline average taken from the first 20 days of December, Flurry showed that new Android and iOS device activations rose 353% on Christmas day. While averaging around 1.5 million activations during the month of December, activations jumped to more than 6.8 million on Christmas day. Ho, ho, ho ly rising reindeer! Thats a staggering increase and to get a better feel for just how impressive those numbers are, only 2.8 million devices were activated last Christmas day.
Flurry also estimates app downloads to have increased 125% on Christmas day compared to previous days in December. This Christmas also saw the single largest number of app downloaded in a single day with over a quarter of a billion downloads more than doubling any previous day in the history of Android and iOS (excluding December 24th). They go on to chart app downloads throughout a 24 hour period, per hour, and show an astonishing 175 million apps being downloaded between 11AM and 11PM Christmas day. These numbers just reiterate the fact that the mobile market is growing at a stupefying rate and remains open to tremendous opportunities.
Windows Phone Marketplace hits 50,000 apps
There is a lot of talk around the web regarding the future of Windows Phone. Is it too little too late, or something else entirely? Will it, with its nascent Nokia partnership, blossom into a full-blown third choice in 2012, ahead of RIM and its BlackBerry line?
While Canadians havent seen a new Windows Phone handset since its launch in October 2010, there is still a lot of momentum surrounding Microsofts mobile platform. As we near the end of 2011 the OS has reached another milestone: 50,000 apps in its App Marketplace and, according to projections, ahead of schedule. There have been nearly 10,000 apps submitted in the last month alone, with a total of 50,126 from 13,000 developers.
I have had the chance to use Windows Phone on and off for the last year and its a gorgeous, dependable OS with a lot of potential. But when is that potential going to come to fruition? Most pundits blame the lack of app selection, and yet 50,000 after only a year and three months points to growth much faster than iOS or Android in its first year. They said, then, that its a dearth of quality apps, but from what Ive seen there are plenty of individual app developers producing high-quality fare at reasonable prices.
And what about the XBox Live integration? The gaming market is where Windows Phone really shines, as it takes but a few lines of code to convert an existing Xbox game for WP7 compatibility.
We sincerely hope that 2012 sees a renewed interest in Windows Phone, and true success for the unique platform, if only because it deserves to be used by those frustrated by the continued fragmentation of Android and the homogeneity of iOS. Its a practical and inexpensive third choice and at 50,000 apps and counting there are enough apps now to keep even the most virulent naysayers app-happy.
Foxconn Investing $1.1 Billion to Boost iPhone Production Capabilities
China Daily reports (via Electronista) that Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn is investing $1.1 billion to nearly double the size of a recently-opened iPhone manufacturing facility in Zhengzhou, China, banking on continued strong growth of iPhone sales.
The base will be centered on the Foxconn Science Park in Zhengzhou, provincial capital of Henan, increasing its current production lines to 95, said the Henan provincial development and reform commission during a conference.
The expansion plan, costing 7 billion yuan ($1.1 billion), is expected to bring $20 billion in sales revenue in 2012, the commission said.
The facility opened earlier this year and is already employing 130,000 workers and producing 200,000 iPhones per day. If the facility were running at full capacity seven days a week, it would be capable of producing 18 million iPhones per quarter.
A Bloomberg report from last week indicated that the city of Zhengzhou is working to help Foxconn add 100,000 workers to the facility this year, and a production boost in line with that workforce increase could see the factory yielding over 350,000 iPhones per day, or nearly 32 million per quarter.

Cydia Gets Updated to Version 1.1.3
This morning voices around the world cheered as hacker pod2g and the Chronic Dev Team whipped up an untethered jailbreak for all A4 devices and older running iOS 5.0.1. The untethered jailbreak was released in two forms - one of which was the new redsn0w 0.9.10b1 and the other was the Cydia package known as Corona that could be installed while you had the tethered jailbreak to untether your iDevice. As most probably simply restored the device to start fresh with a new jailbreak - you probably noticed something different at the bottom of Cydia, or you may not have, and that would be that it has been updated from version 1.1.1 to version 1.1.3.
Cydia, by Jay Freeman (Saurik), is likely the greatest single solitary thing about jailbreaking. It's a powerful application installer engine and an online store that holds a huge library of jailbreak developer creations. Some are free and some are paid but in the end they all serve one purpose and that's to make your iDevice do things that you know Apple would never permit you to do. With Cydia being updated today, you are probably wondering what's different. After all, the interface looks exactly the same and nothing appears to have changed.
The changes in Cydia version 1.1.3 have to do with internal fixes. With no change-log available for public viewing, nothing huge was introduced in the Cydia 1.1.3 update. There were some minor changes, bug fixes, improvements in functionality, and some small security patches, but there are no known new features illuminated in Cydia 1.1.3 yet. From first judgement, it feels a little more fluid and quicker at loading things - maybe that has something to do with the update that we've seen this morning. Of course, with a new jailbreak, updating Cydia to work with it is always necessary.
If you used the Corona patch to get the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak then you will be able to download the Cydia version 1.1.3 update from the changes tab - it will pop up as an essential update. If you went the route that I did and you completely restored the device to start from a clean slate, then you will have noticed that Cydia was installed as the updated version automatically - you won't need to apply any updates or changes to it.
(Cydia has been running really bad since last week, updating & downloading packages takes forever and resulted with a lot of cache failure & unreachable host.)
Rogers prepping to rollout new cancellation policies January 2012, will bring "Bill 60" a like changes across Canada
Quebec consumers were protected in several ways when Bill 60″ went into place in 2010. Specifically when it comes to a wireless perspective, carriers were prohibited from hiding fees and had to advertise all prices, a 60 day notice was mandatory before any contract changes at which time the customer has the option to cancel at no penalty, plus the Early Termination Fees (ETF) cannot exceed the handset subsidy and reduces every month the customer is in contract.
Bill 35 was recently passed in Manitoba, this will similar protection to those located in the province, but its Rogers that is stepping out to lead the change and will be making some changes to the way their wireless contracts are structured. According to a leaked internal doc, it states that Rogers is proactively making changes to how customers in all remaining, non-regulated provinces are serviced when cancelling or making changes to their existing wireless services.
Apparently Rogers will be putting a similar Bill 60 structure in place across Canada where those wireless customers who wish to cancel their service will have to pay a service disconnection fee, or Economic Inducement, of $12.50, plus the hardware subsidy cost Hardware Savings / # of months in term X # of months remaining in the term. So heres how it would look:
Lets say you signed up for the iPhone 4S 16GB on a 3-year at $99, your Hardware Savings is $550 (retail price is $649). If you decide to cancel your Rogers contract at the 1-year mark, your cancellation fee will be $550 / 36 X 24 = $366.67 + $12.50 service disconnection fee for cancelling = $379.17.
This will be carefully worded as another Rogers first, something that is tentatively pegged to go into place late January 2012. Well have more info on this soon
Update: Weve now received a slew of additional tips that this will extend to Fido customers as well.
Update 2: only if you resign after jan 22, new policy will kick in.
