One of my co workers says to upgrade to ios5 but don't use the previous settings then upgrade, he says to do it new. Something to do with the incopatability with older software in the phones being unable to support the newer ios5.
Dunno if I'm wording it properly but hopefully you guys get the gist. |

Your coworker knows nothing, he's smokin' too much iCrack.
Apple would make sure all of our settings from any previous iOS ver migrates over the new iOS without a problem. I've been through Beta 1-7, GM & Public and everything is running smooth. |

I'm definitely at fault 'cause I've never paid attention to it and never used the feature on the iPhone. If I can ever update to IOS5 without getting that error that everyone seems to be getting tonight, then I'll try out this iCloud thing with my emails, etc. |
Here, man - I think you have the wrong idea of what iCloud is. Fair enough, it's a buzzword the media like to throw around.
Loosely put, iCloud is a set of tools designed to work with Apple devices that encourages synchronicity between the devices. It ties in to existing Apple apps and services such as iCal, Contacts etc, but doesn't enhance outside email accounts. Case in point, your email would just be your email. You can register a new iCloud email address, but it doesn't offer anything really different from what is already available in terms of protocols. It's easy-on and simple to set up across iOS 5 and Lion devices.. Think an IMAP protocol email that sets up in a flash.
PS Exchange Activesync is balls, IMAP4LYFE

Eh.. it's the way it used to be. Fresh installs are generally the way to go but having restored from a backup myself I can say it went just fine. |

I hate iMap, fetching your mail every 15 mins whacked. I love EAS, Pushed LIVE as you receive them.

What the upgrade procedure is actually:
1-backup of your iphone
2-reset to factory settings / wiping of everything
3-install of ios5
4-restore your backup
so really it's a fresh install. |

I use to do fresh installs all the time, back in the jailbreaking days and that was not fun. Little bits of pieces of come Cydia app came back when it went stock, such as battery skin and corrupted file.

The method you stated above does nothing, when you install any iOS, it's automaticlly clear and wipes everything out.
Fresh install is when you restore and don't load any of the previous back up and manually setup everything. When you load a back up, all the messed problems will re-occur, which brings you back to square one. I known this even before the iPhone and recently went through it with my 3GS. |

I didn't do these steps manually, thats what the ios5 upgrade did on its own! |

iOS 5 benchmarked: shows improved speed performance

As indicated by the chart above, just released iOS 5 is showing many speed improvements over iOS 4. iOS 5 was faster in almost every category ¡ª as indicated by green ¡ª except for the first generation iPad. The chart was put together by GigaOm using GeekBench, Gague, BenchTest, and SunSpider, comparing many later versions of iOS 4 to iOS 5.
When iOS 4 was released last year, it didn¡¯t show these types of speed improvements over iOS 3, and when updating the 3GS to iOS 4 it saw drastic speed issues and bugs. Speed improvements in iOS 4¡äs case were made update-to-update.
To much of their credit, Apple was able to roll these types of speed updates in one release for iOS 5. And in fact, speed will probably get better as Apple rolls out more updates. Now, how about those activations?
Curious to see how the iPad 2 compared? Check it out after the break:

(Told you guys I wasn't lying about iOS5
That's how you make a phone, hardware can only do so much and you need a proper OS.) |
