BlackBerry Bold 9790 launch causes mayhem, 90 injured in Indonesia [video]
A 50% discount on the just-launched BlackBerry Bold 9790 had mall shoppers in a frenzy in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday. Reportedly, as many as 90 people were injured after shoppers fell out of line and into a disorderly crowd when word came out that the retailer selling the device wouldn’t have enough units to satisfy demand. Three people needed to be hospitalized for broken bones and more than 200 police officers and mall security officials were required to restore peace. According to The Jakarta Globa, the BlackBerry Bold 9790 typically retails for Rp 4.6 million in Indonesia ($520) and BlackBerry is the top brand in the region; four of the top five selling smartphones in the Indonesia right now are BlackBerry devices. A video of the massive crowd that gathered for the 9790 launch follows below.

Microsoft Lync coming to Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Windows Phone next month
Heads up, corporateers. Just like the company previously hinted, Microsoft Lync will soon make its smartphone debut. Currently, the enterprise instant messaging client (formerly known as Microsoft Office Communicator) has only been available to Mac and PC users, but all that is set to change next month when the software becomes available for Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Windows Phone. Curiously, Microsoft's New Zealand outfit had formerly stated that Symbian would be among the mix, although its mention is entirely absent from this announcement. Granted, the news seems rather informal at this point, and there's only so much you can cram into 140 characters.
Windows Phone 7's TellMe vs iPhone 4S Siri
Microsoft’s Craig Mundie shoved his foot knee deep in his mouth this week when he said that Siri was nothing special, and Microsoft’s own voice capabilities have been around for over a year. The reason for Siri’s success? Marketing, of course.
People are infatuated with Apple announcing it. It’s good marketing, but at least as the technological capability you could argue that Microsoft has had a similar capability in Windows Phones for more than a year, since Windows Phone 7 was introduced.
To be fair, Siri isn’t even about the Voice Recognition, it is what the iPhone does with it. The voice recognition is outsourced to Nuance’s engine. The Microsoft Phone barely made it to the point where you could make sense out of what its engine produced.
If you were Microsoft, would you rather Mundie be so out of touch with the technology he is talking about that he can’t tell the difference, or that he’s just flat out shamelessly lying?

Its weird that the 4S is a huge success worldwide, but not in Korea, homebase of Samsung and LG... doctored news?

I guess you didn't notice all the previous Blackberry related posts in here? And Android? And Windows phone?

Oh I've noticed. We have dedicated Blackberry and Android threads, that's where they should go, not the iphone thread. Simple enough, no?

I see your point, but as an iPhone user, I don't mind getting some quick news on other platforms without having to read through 3 forums. As long as it's mostly iPhone here.

All the other threads, traffic wise are way too low. Before they branched off, I knew and stated that would happen and during that transition I even held back on the other platforms news, but no one posted anything toward those dedicated threads. Posting any type of negative news with the other platforms, may subject the OP as a troll if we a know that's not the main device they support and many may feel that way. (I like to avoid that myself)
The news is the news, its good to have a little of eveything and it will have an impact on the main dedicated platform & ecosystem of your chosen device.
Anyways, I'm very suprised the Android thread doesn't have the support it should have, with all the tweaks & mods and all diff models ... it should be boom'in hard.
This is How Siri Could Be Used to Control an Apple Television [Video]
These guys are really enjoying the Siri protocal and tweaking it. (Speaking of Siri, it seems it has learned how I speak to it and now I can even speed up all the commands & speak to text pretty fast and it's on point. Works well in quite area for speed speaking)

Security Expert: iOS Will Not Be Malware-Free Forever
Android has a lot of malware available, and continues to adopt more. How long will iOS be malware-free?
iOS has been the most secure mobile operating system for many years. People will deny that, but to an extent it's true. An unjailbroken iPhone has no way of installing applications outside of Apple's App Store, and the applications that get into the App Store are topped with a layer of extreme scrutiny by the people who accept and reject the applications into the App Store. Android, on the other hand, can install applications that are not on the Android Market by either remote intentions or by the user themselves. Because of this, Android has the better chance of being infected by user ignorance. iOS users have it good in that applications which are accepted into the App Store are checked thoroughly for functionality. There have been rare cases when applications 'with a little extra' have been sneaked into the App Store. Such cases include PayUpSucker which would let you tether your data for free even though it claimed to be an I.O.U. application. Even though this has happened, users weren't complaining because it didn't do anything bad – the developer added the functionality to give people who do not jailbreak their phones the opportunity to have a way to use their data freely.
Android on the other hand, has a myriad of drive-by-malware no matter where you turn. As Phillip Swanson reported not too long ago, Android malware hits are up by 472% since July while iOS remains untouched. So what does this prove?
Not much, but it is hard data. It shows that Android, being a popular operating system and also being easy to install things on, is an easy target for hackers with malicious intentions. Security expert, Bruce Schneier, doesn't see iOS being secure from malware forever. As hackers become more and more accustomed with the way that iOS works and as long as jailbreaking is legal, hackers will learn more and more about what makes iOS tick. As hackers become more and more able with their abilities, they can turn to the dark side. That's not to say that jailbreak hackers will do so, we trust them with our devices because they hack for the greater good of all of us. But, there are evil hackers out there. Bruce Schneier had this to say about iOS and malware:

Help the Chronic Dev-Team Find a Jailbreak Vulnerability Using Their New Tool
The Chronic Dev-Team has a released a tool to collect crash reports from iOS devices in order to find vulnerabilities that could lead to an untethered jailbreak.
Addressing preliminary reports that the Chronic Dev-Team would have a jailbreak ready for iOS 5, p0sixninja says that Apple closed several exploits before the final version of the software was released.
I was excited to announce that the Chronic Dev team had already discovered 5 different exploits for use in our upcoming jailbreak. Unfortunately, that announcement was a bit premature, because in the subsequent weeks, Apple found & patched a (critical) few of those exploits, between the beta versions we used for testing and the final release of iOS5 on October 12.
In order to find more vulnerabilities as fast as possible, the team has developed a tool which will copy the crash reports from your device and analyze them to locate potential exploits. The tool will also remove the crash reports from your device and modify your iTunes installation to prevent uploading of that diagnostic information to Apple.
The program copies all the crash reports off your device (which, under normal circumstances, would be sent right back to Apple), and instead sends this data to a secure, private server hosted by your friendly Chronic Dev team. Next, our program proceeds to neuter your copy of iTunes, simply by changing your settings to prevent your computer from sending any further diagnostic information from your device to Apple.
Using this agglomeration of your crash reports and our ninja skills, Chronic Dev will be able to quickly pinpoint vulnerabilities in various programs by using the same techniques Apple currently employs. At the very least, your data will help point us in the direction of which applications are the most vulnerable, so we can focus our time & energy on these with laser-like intensity. And, of course, this will also prevent Apple from accessing all your valuable data, just so they can then turn around and use it against you.
A Mac beta version of the software can be downloaded from here. The Windows version should be available within 24 hours.
To use the application, simply plug in your iOS device, launch the app, and click the Do It! button.
(I think it's time all you JBers around the world should start helping out, this is the first time I've seen any team as the public for help. I've already sent my crash reports to them)

Dev Team Working On Very Promising iPhone 4S Unlock
Chronic Dev team broke the bad news earlier today that the exploits that they had discovered in iOS 5 beta that could have resulted in an untethered jailbreak for iOS device users and more importantly a jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users, has been patched by Apple in the final version of iOS 5.
But the ever-so dependable iPhone Dev team has just tweeted some good news for iPhone 4S users.
MuscleNerd tweeted few hours back:
Crazy Thanksgiving weekend! Very promising 4S unlock (http://twitpic.com/7kku4t) is in the works (Not i4, just 4S..that's crazy part)
It means that they have discovered out an exploit in the A5 processor that powers iPhone 4S and iPad 2 that will allow users to unlock their iPhone 4S so that they can use it with any other GSM carrier.
MuscleNerd has also posted this image to confirm the unlock for iPhone 4S:
(I don't know why they keep posting these discovery, this allows Apple to see what's coming up and patch or even change upcoming hardware to stop it.
All the Dev Team needs to say is "Unlock or jailbreak coming, hold tight")
