HP cuts its losses, makes webOS open source
Hewlett-Packard on Friday announced that is is contributing its webOS platform to the open source software community. The company confirmed that it would not build any new webOS hardware for the time being, though it said it would continue to actively develop and support the operating system. “WebOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable,” said HP CEO Meg Whitman in a statement. “By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.” HP announced in August that it was discontinuing its webOS hardware efforts and now, more than three months later, the company has finally decided the fate of the platform. HP took ownership of webOS as part of its $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in July 2010. The company’s full press release follows below.
HP to Contribute webOS to Open Source
HP to enable creativity of the community to accelerate the next-generation web-centric platform
PALO ALTO, Calif., Dec. 9, 2011
HP today announced it will contribute the webOS software to the open source community.
HP plans to continue to be active in the development and support of webOS. By combining the innovative webOS platform with the development power of the open source community, there is the opportunity to significantly improve applications and web services for the next generation of devices.
webOS offers a number of benefits to the entire ecosystem of web applications. For developers, applications can be easily built using standard web technologies. In addition, its single integrated stack offers multiplatform portability. For device manufacturers, it provides a single web-centric platform to run across multiple devices. As a result, the end user benefits from a fast, immersive user experience.
“webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable,” said Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer. “By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.”
HP will make the underlying code of webOS available under an open source license. Developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers can deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions into the marketplace.
HP will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project under a set of operating principles:
The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform
HP will be an active participant and investor in the project
Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation
Software will be provided as a pure open source project
HP also will contribute ENYO, the application framework for webOS, to the community in the near future along with a plan for the remaining components of the user space.
Beginning today, developers and customers are invited to provide input and suggestions athttp://developer.palm.com/blog/.
HP CEO confirms new webOS hardware on the way, tablets possible
HP announced on Friday that it will open-source its webOS mobile operating system, which once upon a time powered smartphones and a single tablet. Even though the company said quite some time ago that it was killing off it webOS hardware efforts, HP CEO Meg Whitman said in an interview with The Verge on Friday that HP plans to create new webOS-based devices in the future. “The answer to that is yes but what I can’t tell you is whether that will be in 2012 or not,” Whitman said when asked about the potential for new hardware. “But we will use webOS in new hardware, but it’s just going to take us a little longer to reorganize the team in a quite different direction than we’ve been taking it in the past.” Whitman declined to elaborate on what webOS devices HP plans to build, but she did say tablets are possible.

iPhone 4S cleared for use in China, sino-Siri coming soon
While Apple fans around the globe have had the iPhone 4S for awhile now, many of our friends in the Far East haven't gotten to enjoy the fruits of their countrymen's labor due to a lack of governmental approval. You see, before a handset makes it onto Chinese networks, it's got to be approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The good news is, the 4S has finally been blessed by Beijing and will be brought to the masses by Chinese Unicom sometime soon. That means that China's home-grown superphone, the Meizu MX, is going to have some Siri-ous competition for Chinese hearts and yuan in 2012.
Thank God for iCloud, it saved my life once again. I re-imaged my computer and lost all my data on all my iPhones once I tried to transfer purchases, since I forgot to de-authorize and authorize my iTunes account after the fresh image.

Redsn0w Will Soon Allow You To Downgrade Using iOS 5 SHSH Blobs
Back in June, iPhone Dev team had revealed in a blog post titled "Blob Monster" that Apple has made it difficult to downgrade to an older firmware using SHSH blobs in iOS 5.
However, earlier in the week - iH8sn0w - developer of jailbreak tool Sn0wbreeze released an updated version of iFaith to add support for dumping iOS 5 SHSH blobs, which unlike TinyUmbrella allow users to downgrade to an older version of iOS if they had dumped SHSH blobs with the apticket using iFaith.
It looks like it is going to be soon possible to downgrade using SHSH blobs saved using TinyUmbrella, according to a series of tweets by MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev team.
Upcoming redsn0w release makes both TinyUmbrella and Cydia blob saves useful for 5.0+ (1st verifies, then stitches)
For time being, please just use most recent TU to save 5.0.1 blobs+APTicket…redsn0w will do the rest, should you need to restore.
MuscleNerd hasn't provided any details of how it will work nor has he provided an ETA on when the new version of Redsn0w will be released, but as he has recommended it is a good idea to take SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella, which is available for both Mac and Windows or iFaith.

New details emerge on RIM executives' unruly flight behavior
Last week, two Research In Motion executives disrupted a transcontinental flight to China, but details had been vague. CBC News has now obtained court documents that delve into the pair's in-flight shenanigans and.... well, those must have been some cocktails. According to the documents, George Campbell and Paul Alexander appeared to be under the influence when the Air Canada flight began, and after drinking, passing out, and waking up to drink more, the pair assaulted one flight attendant while threatening to punch another. They were then handcuffed with plastic restraints and tape — which they reportedly chewed their way out of. At one point, Campbell even warned other passengers that he would "off" them after the plane landed.
The pilots eventually diverted the flight to the Vancouver airport, with attendants and passengers restraining Campbell and Alexander for the final 80 minutes. The pair were each fined CA$35,878 after pleading guilty to mischief, and were given suspended sentences and probation for one year. Air Canada flew the other passengers out the following day, 18 hours behind schedule, and has reported that its losses for the diversion are close to CA$200,000.
For its part, RIM fired Campbell and Alexander earlier this week, saying in a statement that the company "does not condone behavior that conflicts with applicable laws and employees are expected to act, at all times, with integrity and respect."
