iOS 4.3 for iPad Daily Mag as Apple’s NC servers go online

Apple’s rumored December special event seems set to see the launch of iOS 4.3, a new version of the mobile OS equipped with mechanisms to enable newspaper and magazine subscription payments — and Rupert Murdoch and Steve Jobs are expected to host the show in which they try to frame the paywall future for publishing.
We already knew about the event, but the introduction of iOS 4.3 is a new one — though it makes sense. News Corp. has big ambitions here, assembling 100 staff to man the newsroom for the title, a daily, iPad-only newspaper.
MacStories has a little more information:
Here’s what we heard from a reliable source: when Apple didn’t know about the WiFi issues in the GM seed of iOS 4.2, the OS was scheduled to be released weeks before Nov. 22nd. Apple found out about the WiFi issues, released a second GM build and iOS 4.2 came out yesterday. It came out in November, but it should have been out in the first half of November. Anyway, before the WiFi issues were discovered, Apple was already planning to release a new build of iOS 4.x in mid-December. Most specifically, they were planning for an iOS 4.3 release on December 13th, which is a Monday.
MacStories also tells us the AAPL data center is set to be pushed to the limit. “Our source told us_Apple isn’t saying much, but judging by some the internal documents, it seems this is going to be a mass expansion of all services, iTunes, MobileMe, activations, retail services and any cloud services they might go with in the future.”
Back to the title,
“The central innovation, developed with assistance from Apple engineers, will be to dispatch the publication automatically to an iPad or any of the growing number of similar devices,” The Guardian recently reported. |

Apple’s poaching BlackBerries (RIM folk jump ship)

Yet more dogs of war heard howling in the mists as we learn Apple has been quietly poaching senior enterprise sales staff from competitor, Research In Motion. The Wall Street Journal (via MR) tells us Apple has hired at least five members of the RIM enterprise team — and stresses there could be even more Apple switchers making the move to iPhone.
In the past 18 months, at least five members of RIM’s enterprise-sales team have left the company to join Apple. This includes Geoff Perfect, who served as Head of Strategic Sales at RIM for nearly five years before leaving in April 2009 and joining Apple a month later as Head of Enterprise iPhone Sales, according to LinkedIn, the online networking service for professionals.
These hirings clearly reflect Apple’s growing place in the enterprise. Apple itself has told us that 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies are already studying/trialling use of or are already using iPhones as part of their essential infrastructure. Apple also has growing conversions in the sector on back of its iPad, which, with 4.2, is even better for business.
During the most recent Apple financial call, Steve Jobs slammed RIM as being out of its comfort zone in a tirade in which he also pointed out that iPhone outsold BlackBerry in the most recent quarter. And Apple execs stressed the company continues to make attempts at the enterprise — hence all the rock-hard security bvuilt-into iOS 4.2.
Android meanwhile continues to gain sales, but doesn’t appear yet to have charmed corporate markets. |

I was referring to us, Canadians ... We had a window of the best data & value pack ever. Only recently from the IP4 launch, AT&T came out with their value packs. Alittle too late, since iOS 4 and the IP4 uses so much data. |

iPhone gets UberTwitter client, BlackBerrys have one less reason to exist

If the name UberTwitter sounds familiar, that'll be because it's one of the more popular mobile Twitter clients, accounting for 10 million tweets each day from BlackBerry users around the globe. And now it's also available on the iPhone. Citing the "growing dominance" of Apple's one-device-to-rule-them-all mobile platform, the UberTwitter crew has decided to expand its offering with a new open beta, which is available to download now. The major distinguishing feature being touted is something called UberView, which allows access to links within tweets without exiting the app or opening up a new window within it. Looks a pretty slick idea, but there are still some early issues to be ironed out -- as with all beta iterations -- and a final v1.0 should be ready to do battle with Twitter's official app by the middle of December. |

Rogers NEW Data Prioroty Services

Here’s an interesting topic that will certainly garner some comments. We got tipped yesterday from a reader who received a Rogers urVoice survey that shows they are thinking about implementing a “premium” service. It’s called “Data Priority Service” and if Rogers is ever experiencing “network congestion” then those customers who sign up for this premium service would be sent their data before the millions of other customers.
Here’s a summary of the “Data Priority Service”:
“The Data Priority Service is a new premium service that guarantees that in the event of any wireless network congestion, your data will be sent and received first. In other words, the Data Priority Service ensures that during busy network times, a subscriber’s data is always sent first, so if the subscriber to this service is web browsing and/or watching an online video on their mobile device they will be less likely than a non-subscriber to this service to be affected by any network congestion”.
Would you want this service and would you pay for it? Or do you everyone should be on the same playing field and no tiered data services when it comes to delivering your data?
(Thanks Matt!)
Update: It seems that Rogers might be asking $10 for this service
**********************************************************
We've all paid the mythical SAF for many years, this should of been used for "operation and maintenance costs" to "our" networks? That's what Rogers has stated for many years and this new "Data Priority Service" is being deployed for Network Outage periods?
In realty, there will be network outages and that's a given. What's unacceptable is, Rogers is coming out with many poor excuses to downgrade our services, jack up the prices and reap all of the customer's benefits, which we all deserve as loyal customer for many years. Network congestion only happens when you don't spend your money (in this case SAF and other "fees") wisely on "our" networks. Instead you spend $25 million in advertising last Christmas and made it another excuse to jack up our price tags for our services.
If Ted Rogers RIP were still here, things wouldn't be turning this sour. The honest truth, I've only complained about Rogers three times. The previous times were...
A) Sale Central not being updated; nor prepared on the IP4 launch date, which made the whole country suffer in long lines up everywhere
B) When they deployed the new 30 month rule for HUP policy, (which was reverted swiftly back to 24 months HUP policy when everyone attacked the Roger's Social Media Team)
C) Today's newest news
As many of us know, customer care is the highest priority in any type of business. If Rogers really want to turn things sour for us, rests assure the results would be irreversible and catastrophic in the near future for "Canada's most reliable network". |

iOS 4.2.1 Available Today
As per Apples website
Find My iPhone Now FREE Without A MobileME Subscription
According to Apples website, this is now free for iPad, fourth gen iPod Touch, and iPhone 4. You're out of luck if you have a 3GS or 3G.
"Find My iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch — the MobileMe feature that helps you locate your missing device and protect its data — is now free on any iPhone 4, iPad, or fourth-generation iPod touch running iOS 4.2.3 Once you set it up, you can find your lost device on a map, display a message on its screen, remotely set a passcode lock, and initiate a remote wipe to delete your data. And if you eventually find your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can restore everything from your last backup." |
So awesome. |
