Originally posted by E2EK1EL One Reason why the 3.5" screen still works
The iPhone screen has remained at 3.5 inches since its debut back in 2007. Why hasn’t this increased when competitor screens have continued to grow larger and larger?
Dustin Curtis compares the advantages of his former 3.5 inch iPhone screen compared to the 4.27 inches on his new Samsung Galaxy S II:
Touching the upper right corner of the screen on the Galaxy S II using one hand, with its 4.27-inch screen, while you’re walking down the street looking at Google Maps, is extremely difficult and frustrating. I pulled out my iPhone 4 to do a quick test, and it turns out that when you hold the iPhone in your left hand and articulate your thumb, you can reach almost exactly to the other side of the screen. This means it’s easy to touch any area of the screen while holding the phone in one hand, with your thumb. It is almost impossible to do this on the Galaxy S II.
Any screen larger than 3.5 inches, and you run into the problems of whether your device is a smartphone, or a medium-sized tablet. The Dell Streak is the perfect example of a confused device. This isn’t a problem if you have massive hands, though.
(The size of the IP4 is still the best, having a larger display would be nice, but it kills the form factor. *Unless the screen runs edge to edge, but that's gonna look strange.* 4"+ screens are just way to big, placing it in your jean pockets won't work and some ppl like me, struggle to hold it in one hand even.)
Gonna have to agree that anything beyond 4" is too big. I have a 3.8" HTC Glacier and I wish it were smaller.
My ideal phone would be the new Sony Xperia Ray; 3.3" screen, 111 x 53 x 9.4 mm dimensions. Absolutely fantastic size.

Pre-sales of ‘disappointing’ iPhone 4S fail to disappoint
Despite assorted cries of disappointment following Apple’s iPhone 4S unveiling last Tuesday, pre-sales of the company’s latest smartphone have seemingly been nothing short of impressive. But this is hardly a surprise. AT&T sold more than 200,000 iPhone 4S handsets during the first 12 hours of pre-order availability, making this the carrier’s most successful AT&T iPhone launch to date according to a company spokesperson. No other carriers have revealed pre-order figures thus far, but Apple took in a total of 600,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders across all carriers and distribution channels last year on the first day of pre-sales availability. That figure was a record for Apple at the time. Read on for more.
As of Friday evening, less than one day after the iPhone 4S became available for pre-order, delivery estimates from Apple’s online store slipped from October 14th to “1-2 weeks,” indicating inventory from Apple’s first round of iPhone shipments has already been depleted. Apple’s new iPhone 4S features the same glass and metal build as its predecessor, but it includes an upgraded 8-megapixel camera and a dual-core A5 processor as well as Apple’s new voice-driven personal assistant software, Siri.
Despite preliminary complaints from an apparent minority, analysts still have high expectations for Apple’s latest smartphone and the iPhones 3GS and 4, which both saw price drops as Apple’s new iPhone model was unveiled. Wedge Partners’ Brian Blair, who modeled for an incremental iPhone refresh amid rumors of a redesigned iPhone 5, estimates that Apple shipped between 24 million and 25 million iPhones in the September quarter. The analyst sees that figure growing to 27 million units in Apple’s December quarter.
Apple announced earlier this year that it sold 20.34 million iPhones into sales channels in the June quarter, making it the world’s No. 1 smartphone vendor by volume in the second calendar quarter this year.
(The US subscribers are so lucky to HUP every year, this applies to all the phones and Apple's new IP4 $200 recycle program)
GSM Nexus Prime passes through the FCC, possibly heading to AT&T?
Just because next week's joint Samsung and Google event has been postponed doesn't mean the leaks have to end. A Sammy handset with the model number I9250, which matches up nicely with the baseband version in the Galaxy Nexus shots that popped up, just made an appearance at the FCC packing a GSM radio compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile's faux-G networks. It's also boasting dual-band 802.11n, Bluetooth and NFC. Despite suggestions that the next Nexus device would be a Verizon exclusive, we could be looking at the AT&T version or at least the unlocked GSM model. The fact that it doesn't support T-Mobile's 2100MHz band leads us to believe this won't be popping up in T-Mo shops. Also noticeably missing is any mention of LTE -- that particular feature could still be the sole realm of Big Red. Hopefully we won't have to wait much longer to find out all the details. One more image after the break.

iPhone Cydia App 'iGotYa' Catches iPhone Thief
iGotYa... HAHA.
Need another reason for why Jailbreaking your iPhone is worth it? Maybe this is a good reason to jot down on your list.
Cydia's 'iGotYa' app, which sells for $5.99, helped 31-year-old Erum Malik, a mother of four from Queens New York, re-obtain her stolen iPhone and catch the culprit responsible for the inconvenient incident. It's an alternative to Apple's Find My iPhone app, which is free in the App Store but offers limited functionality; it shows the user's approximate location on a map but, unlike iGotYa, it will not take a photo of the thief.
iGotYa, a security application for your iPhone 4, does two major things. First, if your iPhone has a pass-code and the pass-code is entered incorrectly, it will take a front-facing-camera-photo of the person who entered the incorrect pass-code. In addition to that, it will send the picture it took along with the current GPS location of the iPhone, to the email of the true owner. This gave the Queens mother everything she needed to know about the thief in order to call authorities - since she recognized the man as the person who had gotten into a scruff with her and took her iPhone.
Brian Chattoo, 23, was captured Friday at his home in Richmond Hill - the suspect who's picture was taken using the iGotYa application. According to police, he snagged the iPhone from Malik's pocket in the middle of a scruff. The man was described by police as Hispanic, in his 20s and about 5'8" with short, dark hair and an earring in his left ear.
Malik, rushed around her neighborhood to see if anyone had recognized the man; using the GPS location and photo as a reference. Malik said that she didn't want the man to get into trouble, all she wanted was her phone back. She called the iPhone many times after it was stolen only to find that the iPhone had been switched off. She sent numerous text messages to it, one being that she would offer $200 for its safe return. Despite Malik wishing that the thief would not be charged and that she could just get her phone back, it turns out that the thief of the iPhone was recognized by police from a wanted poster due to grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. He was arrested on Friday. Local police warn that you should never cancel your service of a phone right as it is stolen, so that they can accurately track it down.
To me, this seems like an excellent reason to Jailbreak your iPhone 4. You can rarely do anything without a picture of the suspect.
So what do you think? Is iGotYa a useful app or what? Share below!

Video: Charlie Rose talks to Eric Schmidt, Marc Andreessen and Walt Mossberg on Steve Jobs’ legacy
This is probably the best discussion of Jobs and his legacy that I’ve seen yet. Thought it was interesting that Jobs didn’t like to travel and according to Andreessen, he never flew to China.
IP4S - Rogers
$159 + $320 + $35 + tax = $580.82 w/ 3 yr Term
Now you guys understand why I was so mad about Rogers changing the HUP policy from 24 months to 30 months twice already, and allowing Early HUP for $20/ months doesn't make any sense at all. It's totally unfair to everyone; regardless if you're new or a loyal customer for many years, this is really insulting to be honest and it does not retain customers in the long run.
Rogers already felt the pain when Wind and Mobilicity launched, many had left and soon even more will follow. Those AWS network coverage are getting better and the only reason why we're still on Rebellus, it's because of the iPhones. Things will change in the future, once Apple decides to make an AWS iPhone.
I use to love Rogers; I defended Rogers all the time on the tech forums, the blogs and to anyone who trashed Rogers. Everything fell a part when Nadir Mohommad took over; he use to be an accountant and all they care about is profits and cutting cost.
Everything skyrocketed, prices went up and plans were shrunken and for what you might ask? Roger's did not build the new LTE networks, we did and we're going to pay even more in the future. It's just like SAF in the past, why should we pay for it? It's part of doing business, you don't see other business's charging some hidden fee when they invoice you at the end of the month to help build "their future business".
2013 will be my final year with Rogers; nothing gets better over here and it only gets worse with these out of the blue "adjustments" to customers who are signed to a contract.

I was mocking the performance; it uses to much memory and doesn't flush or dump it properly.
The crash you saw was due a memory leak somewhere in Angry Birds or another app. Once the home screen re-sprung from the crash, the choppy animation was system wide.

Apple iPhone 4S pre-orders exceed one million in first 24 hours
Last year's iPhone 4 launch brought more than 600,000 pre-orders within the first 24 hours. This year, that number nearly doubled, topping one million within one day of the device's pre-order availability through AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. Those that haven't pre-ordered the iPhone 4S can line up at Apple stores beginning at 8 a.m. on October 14th, or you can try your luck at pre-ordering now, though you may need to wait an extra week or two to get your hands on Apple's new iOS smartphone. Jump past the break for Apple's PR.
iPhone 4S: It really is twice as fast, Siri supports Raise to Speak
As Apple announced this morning one million iPhone 4S pre-orders in just 24 hours and some customers began receiving shipping notifications, someone out there already has the handset in their hands and they have a video to prove it (via MacRumors). The interesting bit is the Siri section in Settings which lets you choose between activating Siri by holding down the home button or simply raising your handset to your ear, which 9to5Mac indicated back in August. This feature isn¡¯t simply activated via the iPhone¡¯s proximity sensor sensing your ear (like the Google app for iOS), but also taps motion sensors for accuracy as well. Other Siri options in the Settings interface include language choices (English, French and German at launch, Apple promised more to come at a later stage), Voice Feedback, My Info and enabling/disabling Siri system-wide. According to early benchmarks, Apple wasn¡¯t lying describing iPhone 4S as ¡°twice as fast¡±. The handset scores 2222.1 milliseconds in the SunSpider benchmark and 89567 in the BrowserMark benchmark. This compares to a BrowserMark score of 44856 on an iPhone 4 with iOS 5.
Much of the speed gain stems from the A5 chip which first appeared in iPad 2 this Spring. Apple says the dual-core A5 chip inside iPhone 4S enables two times faster CPU performance and up to seven times faster graphics versus nine times graphics performance on iPad 2. The discrepancy in graphics performance between iPad 2¡äs and iPhone 4S¡¯s A5 chip likely is attributed to a lower clock frequency on the latter, a concession to preserve battery life. Apple says Siri, an AI-driven personal assistant feature exclusive to iPhone 4S, cannot be realized on earlier iPhone versions due to significant computational requirements (although that doesn¡¯t stop hackers from trying). The A5 chip is thought to pack in a dual-core Cortex-A9 processing core from ARM Holdings, Imagination Technologies¡¯ PowerVR SGX543 MP2 graphics unit (also dual-core) and 1GB of RAM. None of this has been officially confirmed because Apple doesn¡¯t go into chip details and its partners are mum on the matter as well, so we¡¯ll have to wait for an x-ray analysis for some clue. In addition to Siri, the chip¡¯s digital signal processing capabilities are also being utilized to stabilize shaky video in real-time when recording clips using the built-in Camera app (and likely in other places as well).
Is Siri coming to your television?
Siri, an intelligent voice-controlled personal assistant which debuted with the iPhone 4S, could come to your big screen television via Apple¡¯s set-top box. The evidence is inconclusive at this point, but clues exist pointing in this direction. For starters, Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross speculated about Siri on the Apple TV in her note to clients last week, observing (via the Fortune blog):
One interesting application of the Siri technology would be with Apple TV (either the existing device or actual TV¡¯s that Apple may launch). We think this would solve the industry¡¯s difficulties with remote controls¡_ We think it would be very compelling to own a TV or a device that could quickly answer the request, ¡°I want to watch the Yankees/Red Sox game,¡± by changing the TV channel without requiring the user to look at a guide or use a remote control, or even specifying HD or standard definition feeds, since you would want the HD channel if available. Or, you could instruct the device to record all new episodes of a show, without leaving the program you are currently watching. Finally, since you are online, a Siri enabled TV could answer whether your iPhone or computer has received a new message, and let you respond accordingly.
I know what you¡¯re thinking¡_ Analysts, they also predicted flying cars, right? But if Apple were to bring the Siri functionality into their set top-box, they would need to issue a hardware refresh because the current-generation Apple TV powered by the A4 processor lacks oomph to run Siri. As 9to5Mac discovered on Friday, the Apple TV 3,1 reference in the iOS file system indicates a major hardware refresh for the device. While references to devices that have never come to fruition had previously appeared in the iOS code, this one comes from a file that Apple uses to activate unreleased devices in testing. If Apple is testing a new Apple TV with the A5 chip, it would indicate full HD 1080P video playback and ¨C although this is a stretch ¨C the possibility of voice-controlled input powered by Siri. Think telling your Apple TV to search for movies from 2010 starring Tom Cruise, play four stars-rated songs by Bob Dylan, serve up weather information, compare stocks, rate an episode of a TV show you¡¯re watching, asking ¡°who directed this movie¡± and so forth. And while we¡¯re at it¡_
i0n1c Confirms iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak is On The Way
Now that the public release of iOS 5 is just around the corner, as well as the iPhone 4S launch, the jailbreak community is begging the question; when will the next untethered jailbreak come out? Ever since the beginning of the iOS 5 beta cycle, the redsn0w 0.9.x beta has been able to allow users to jailbreak iOS 5, however it has only been tethered. For the hardcore users who will jailbreak no matter what, this may not be an issue. But for the majority of us, we need an untethered jailbreak to move forward with jailbreaking our device(s). Although there may have seemed to be no progress in formulating an untethered for iOS 5, this is not the case.
About ten hours ago, Stefan Esser (i0n1c), known for his infamous exploits that got us untethered jailbreaks on 4.3.x, tweeted out that the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is "covered" already. And to conclude his tweet, he left us with "Guess who?" The answer is much more obvious than it may seem to be.
On numerous occasions, members of the Chronic Dev Team have dropped us little hints that progress is moving ever forward in regards to an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak. Chronic Dev members posixninja (@p0sixninja) and OPK (@iOPK) at mentioned at MyGreatFest, the world's first jailbreak convention, that the Chronic Dev Team has found at least five userland exploits that could be potentially used for iOS 5. Finding these "loop holes" is exciting within itself however the process is just at the beginning.
Stefan's tweet "out to the world" is just a reiteration of what has been happening. If you were in doubt that something is coming or being worked on, be reassured. Stefan made it clear that he doesn't have an ETA on the release of this jailbreak tool, and I can guarantee you that the Chronic Dev Team doesn't either. Continue to be patient, supportive, and be extremely excited that it is on the way!
