Ironicly, I saw an orginal iPhone yesterday and it was update to the most recent firmware and the baseband was unlocked. What happened was, some fool did all the work and updated the firmware to a legit 3.0 ... but the baseband was kepted. Pretty messed up.
Anyways, might aswell update it yourself, jailbreak it and unlock it if you like.
Thanks for the advice.
right now I'm at 0 on the knowledge scale. Maybe tomorrow I'll have some time to go back and read parts of this thread that I skipped over because I didn't have one. It's too nice outside to stay in :)
One thing I noticed... the app store.... I was looking for free apps... I get a blank screen after clicking on an app... nothing to click and download.... I assume it's because I'm wifi, and need at least an edge connection or data plan to get some free apps from this source?

I don't know what state your unit is in, the AppStore needs an iTunes account and you'll have to register and get one.
Best advice is the restore it with the newest firmware, jailbreak it and unlock it. Start totally fresh right from the start.
This thread is mostly 3G stuff with firmware 2.0 to 3.0. No need to read the entire thread, most of it has changed after 3.0. Just keep your eyes on the first post to start things.
Good luck dude.

cool... yeah, I also just found out an hour ago from a neighbour that I need itunes.
my next challenge will be transfering my contacts from my old nokia phone to the iphone. I'm going to figure out how to bluetooth it to itunes, and then to iphone... i hope it works.

Bluetooth won't work. Lol
nokia to sim card, sim card to iPhone and then iPhone sync to your computer ... Stored in windows address book.
You could manually type then out in windows address book and sync it to the iPhone.

Allow me to clarify... I have all my contacts on my SIM. it's ther iphone that didn't transfer them over. All my other phones, I just moved the chip from one to another, and the new phone was able to use my contact list. the iphone didn't.
... and guess what... I just accidentally locked my iphone I think :(
I thought I was just updating itunes, and it turned out it messed my phone and said my sim chip isn't valid. I put in the AT&T one, and then it wants itunes to register my new phone. .
It looks like a visit to the Pacific Mall is in order, any recommendations on which place to go, or anything else?
I tried winpwn 2.5 and fw 2.02 and it won't work. I've spent enough hours on this thing and jujst want to bring it in and have someone do it so I don't have to stress about it anymore.
Any place closer to Aurora?

ok, this technique uses different softwaqre to jailbreak it than what I used. I'll try this, as I am no longer frustrated as last night. I'll give it one more try using your video and if still bricked, this gwai-lo's going to the mall.

enough was enough... got to frustrated again. I went to the pacific mall, and had it done there. upgraded to 3.01, and got Cydia on this thing... nice. I'm such a n00b, but enjoying my new toy.
I noticed with 3.01 that the wifi doesn't seem as stable as my 2.01. I seem to be dropping more on 3.01.

For some reason, mine doesn't seem to like WPA2 w/ AES, but I think it's moreso my router and its tiness.

Set your router to G mode only, will help with speeds. Don't know about stableness.

TomTom navigation for iPhone 3G and 3GS arrives (update: video!)
True, it's not the first app offering turn-by-turn driving instructions for the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS -- but it is from TomTom, an industry heavy-weight that is finally delivering on years of rumor and speculation. After starting with New Zealand a few hours ago, the iTunes App Store is now populated with region specific TomTom apps for NZ ($95), Australia ($80), US and Canada ($100), and Western Europe ($140). If that sounds expensive... it is; dedicated TomTom navigators start at $120. In other words, this isn't one of those knee-jerk 99 cent App Store purchases. Naturally, that price does not include the announced TomTom iPhone car kit (rumored to cost £113.85 (about $194) with bundled mapping software) that mounts and charges your iPhone 3G or 3GS while enhancing its GPS performance, speaker, and microphone. Our advice: wait for the reviews before dedicating your non multi-tasking iPhone to the dashboard for navigation duties.
Update: Recombu took the software for a spin and seem duly impressed by their ability to navigate streets with an iPhone taped to the dash (not a joke). They say that when a call comes in, the TomTom app "turns off but restarts as soon as you finish the call." See the video overview after the break.
EDIT: F*CK it came out yesterday while I was fishing! Already cracked in the private source.
